German Woman Kills "Instagram Lookalike" To Fake Own Death

A 23-year-old German woman has been accused of seeking out a lookalike of herself on social media and killing her in an attempt to fake her own death, reported Telegraph. The brutal and bizarre case has been dubbed "the doppelganger murder."

The police referred to the German woman as Shahraban K, 24, residing in Munich, who had set up a fake Instagram account and tried contacting women who resembled her. After scouting many profiles, she found a cosmetics blogger, Algerian citizen Khadidja O, 23, who lived about 100 miles away, police said.

Both the women had long dark hair and similar complexion.

According to police, Shahraban K and her boyfriend named Sheqir K, 24, reached out to Khadidja and offered beauty products and went to pick her up.

While going back, they stopped in a forest and stabbed the victim over 50 times, police said.

Shahraban K had told her husband that she was going to meet her ex-husband.

When Shahraban didn't return, her parents went looking for her in Ingolstadt and found her Mercedes near the Danube.

On the back seat of the car, the body of a dark-haired young woman brutally murdered was found and they believed it was their daughter, the Telegraph reported.

According to police, several knives were reportedly found nearby and the car was reportedly discovered not far from Sheqir K's flat.

After doing autopsy and DNA tests, it was found that the body was actually Khadidja O.

Shahraban K and Sheqir K were then arrested.

The police were baffled by the resemblance between the owner of the car and the dead.

Veronika Grieser, an Ingolstadt prosecutor, told the Bild newspaper: "It has been confirmed that the accused had contacted several women via Instagram before the act who seemed to look similar to her.

"It can be assumed that the suspect wanted to go into hiding, due to internal disputes with her family, and fake her own death."

A police spokesman said the killing was done for "base motives."

The spokesman said: "During the return journey, the victim was lured out of the vehicle as planned under a pretext and killed in a wooded area with a large number of stabs in the body.

"The accused then continued their journey to Ingolstadt, where the body was found on the evening of Aug 16th. It was found lying in the vehicle."

Another police spokesman told Bild: "The murder weapon has still not been found but the burden of proof is overwhelming.

"The victim was killed with more than 50 stab wounds and her face was badly injured. That was brutal in the extreme.

"It was an extraordinary case that required all the investigators' skills. We don't have a case like this every day, especially with such a spectacular twist. On the day we found the body, we did not expect it to develop like this."

Adani Group Gets $400 Million Investment From UAE Royals In Share Sale

Billionaire Gautam Adani's embattled group clutched on to a $400-million (Rs 3,260 crore) investment by Abu Dhabi's International Holding Co. in its flagship firm's share sale to restore confidence in the conglomerate that saw nearly $70-billion rout in value after a tiny New York short seller came out with a damning report.

Gautam Adani, 60, who was third richest man in the world till a day before Hindenburg Research came out with its report on January 24 that flagged concerns about its debt levels and alleged stock manipulation, accounting fraud and the use of tax havens, has slipped to 8th position, narrowing the gap with rival Mukesh Ambani, whom he overtook in April last year, to just $4 billion.

His group late on Sunday night issued a 413-page response to the Hindenburg report in an attempt to restore confidence in the business empire but it could not cut much ice and stock prices of most group companies continued to fall and key dollar bonds sank to fresh lows on Monday.

The US short seller dismissed charges that its report on Adani Group's malfeasance was a "calculated attack" on India, saying a "fraud" cannot be obfuscated by nationalism or a bloated response that ignored key allegations.

Hindenburg released the report on January 24 -- the day on which Adani Enterprise Ltd's Rs 20,000-crore follow-on share sale opened for investors. While anchor investors poured in almost Rs 6,000 crore in the FPO on that day, the public subscription remained muted with just 3 per cent of the shares on offer being subscribed till Monday evening, according to information available on BSE.

The offer closes on January 31 and the retail investor portion -- which is the biggest chunk of the FPO -- is hardly 4 per cent subscribed.

IHC said it will invest about USD 400 million in Adani Enterprises' follow-on share sale, saying it was confident in the fundamentals of the conglomerate even after the route in share value. "We see a strong potential for growth from a long-term perspective and added value to our shareholders," its CEO Syed Basar Shueb said in a statement.

IHC is led by Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed Al Nahyan -- the UAE's national security adviser and brother to the president.

Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) also issued a separate statement saying its investments in the group are safe. "Our total holding in the Adani group companies under equity and debt on date is Rs 36,474.78 crore. This was Rs 35,917.31 crore as of December 31, 2022. Total purchase value of these equities of the group companies, bought over the past many years, is Rs 30,127 crore and the market value for the same at close of market hours on January 27, 2023 was Rs 56,142 crore," it said

Punjab National Bank (PNB), which has about Rs 7,000 crore exposure in Adani Group entities, however, said it is keeping a close watch on the developing situation.

Earlier in the day, Hindenburg responded to the 413-page detailed statement issued by the Adani Group late on Sunday, saying it failed to specifically answer 62 of its 88 questions, and conflated the company's "meteoric rise" and the wealth of Asia's richest man "with the success of India itself".

In the Sunday evening statement, Adani group had called Hindenburg "Madoffs of Manhattan" and that its report was "not merely an unwarranted attack on any specific company but a calculated attack on India, the independence, integrity and quality of Indian institutions, and the growth story and ambition of India."

Standing by its report that alleged "fraud" at the second largest conglomerate in India run by the world's then-third richest man, Hindenburg said it disagrees with Adani group's assertion of its report being an attack on India.

"To be clear, we believe India is a vibrant democracy and an emerging superpower with an exciting future," it said.

"We also believe India's future is being held back by the Adani Group, which has draped itself in the Indian flag while systematically looting the nation." A "fraud is fraud, even when it's perpetrated by one of the wealthiest individuals in the world," it said, adding, "Adani also claimed we have committed a 'flagrant breach of applicable securities and foreign exchange laws'. Despite Adani's failure to identify any such laws, this is another serious accusation that we categorically deny."

Adani's 413-page response only included about 30 pages focused on issues related to the report and the remainder consisted of 330 pages of court records, along with 53 pages of high-level financials, general information, and details on "irrelevant" corporate initiatives such as how it encourages female entrepreneurship and the production of safe vegetables.

On Sunday evening, Adani group said the Hindenburg report was intended to enable the US-based short seller to book gains by crashing stock prices.

The report had come just as a Rs 20,000-crore share sale at the group's flagship company, Adani Enterprises, opened to anchor investors.

"All transactions entered into by us with entities who qualify as 'related parties' under Indian laws and accounting standards have been duly disclosed by us," it had said late on Sunday.

"This is rife with conflict of interest and intended only to create a false market in securities to enable Hindenburg, an admitted short seller, to book massive financial gain through wrongful means at the cost of countless investors." Hindenburg reiterated that it was short on the Adani group through US traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivative instruments.

In the January 24 report, it had called out the conglomerate's "substantial debt", which includes pledging shares for loans; that Adani's brother Vinod "manages a vast labyrinth of offshore shell entities" that move billions into group companies without required disclosure; and that its auditor "hardly seems capable of complex audit work".

Hindenburg, which is known for having shorted electric truck maker Nikola Corp and Twitter, said the Adani group has responded to its questions on the source of billions of dollars that have flowed from Vinod Adani-associated offshore shell entities saying it is neither aware nor required to be aware of the source of funds.

Vinod Adani is the brother of Gautam Adani.

Separately on Sunday, Adani Group CFO Jugeshinder Singh had expressed confidence in the follow-on public offer of Adani Enterprises sailing through.

He likened the behaviour of Indian investors participating in the sell-off to the colonial-era Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar.

"In Jallianwala Bagh, only one Englishman gave an order, and Indians fired on other Indians," Singh told the Mint business daily, when asked why the market believed the Hindenburg report. "So am I surprised by the behaviour of some fellow Indians? No." At least 379 people were killed when Gen. Reginald Dyer on April 13, 1919, ordered about 50 Indian army soldiers to shoot at unarmed, peaceful civilian protesters.

Since Tuesday's close last week, shares of Adani Total Gas tanked 39.57 per cent, Adani Transmission tumbled 37.95 per cent, Adani Green Energy declined 37.93 per cent, Ambuja Cements went lower by 22.28 per cent and Adani Ports fell 21.55 per cent on the BSE.

In three days, shares of ACC tanked 18.47 per cent, Adani Enterprises fell 16.38 per cent, Adani Wilmar dipped 14.25 per cent, Adani Power (14.24 per cent) and NDTV (14.22 per cent).

The group firms have collectively lost over Rs 5.56 lakh crore in market valuation between Tuesday last week and Monday.

Cop Who Killed Odisha Minister Was Being Treated For Mental Illness

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Gopalkrushna Das, who allegedly shot dead Odisha's health Minister Naba Kishore Das here, was being treated for bipolar disorder by a psychiatrist.

Despite the history of mental disorder, Das was somehow issued a service revolver and appointed in-charge of a police post at Brajrajnagar where he shot dead Das.

MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur, Psychiatry department head Dr Chandra Sekhar Tripathy told reporters that Das was suffering from bipolar disorder.

"Das had first visited my clinic about eight to ten years ago. He used to get angry very easily and was undergoing treatment for this," Dr Tripathy said.

"I am not sure whether he was taking medicines regularly. If medicine are not taken regularly, the disease reappears. It has been a year since he visited me last," th doctor said.

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that ranged from hyper-mania to depression, according to experts. However, the disease can be controlled by treatment including counselling.

Das was a resident of Jaleswarkhandi village of Ganjam district. He started his career in police as a constable in Berhampur and was later transferred to Jharsuguda district 12 years ago.

Jharsugda SDPO Gupteswar Bhoi said the ASI was issued a licensed pistol after he was made in-charge of a police outpost at Gandhi Chhak of Brajrajnagar area. Das's wife Jayanti also confirmed that her husband used to take medicine for the psychological disorder. "As he stays about 400 km from us, I cannot say whether he was regularly taking medicine," she said.

Official sources said that Das was Sunday deployed for law and order arrangement for minister Naba Das's visit. Before opening fire at the minister, Das had kept his motorcycle nearly 50 metres away from the spot were he attacked Das.

He allegedly opened fire while the minister alighted from a car to attend a local programme and his supporters were garlanding him.

Though he fired two rouds targeting the minister, only one of hit the target. Immediately after the incident, Das attempted to flee from the spot by firing at the air, but was captured, police said.

"He was was immediately overpowered and detained for questioning," SDPO Bhoi said.

However, the reason behind the ASI opening fire at the minister was yet to be ascertained, he said.

Meanwhile, officials said the crime Branch of Odisha Police has taken over the case relating to killing of the health minister.

A seven member special Investigating team comprising Cyber Expert, Ballistic Expert and officers of Crime Branch has been formed, a senior CB official said adding that the team is led by Ramesh Ch Dora, deputy Superintendent of Police rank officer.

He along with a balastics expert have reached Jharsuguda by helicopter to start the investigation.

Arun Bothara IPS, ADGP, CID-CB has also accompanied them to personally supervise and monitor the probe.

The CID Crime Branch has registered a case under section 307 IPC read with 27 Arms Act, an official said.

Watch: 'Slumdog Millionaire' Inspires Figure Skater To European Title

Georgia's Anastasiia Gubanova was crowned European figure skating champion on Saturday after a memorable performance to the soundtrack of the movie blockbuster "Slumdog Millionaire". Despite an error on a triple flip, the 20-year-old triumphed ahead of Belgium's Loena Hendrickx who had started as favourite in the absence of Russia's banned skaters. "I'm in shock, but the work paid off," said Gubanova, dressed in a bright outfit to resemble a sari, after winning the free program in Espoo, Finland.

Watch: 'Slumdog Millionare' Inspires Gerogian Figure Skater To European Title

She had already won the short program and finished the competition on 199.91 points.

"I was so stressed before skating, and mentally it was very hard," added Gubanova who had represented Russia until 2021.

"At the end of my performance, there were a lot of emotions."

Having finished 11th at the Beijing Olympics then sixth at the world championships last year, Saturday's win was comfortably the biggest of Gubanova's career.

Hendrickx, runner-up at the worlds, had been the favourite to succeed the banned Kamila Valieva as champion.

But the Belgian fell heavily twice on Saturday.

"I'm not happy at all. I wanted to do a good program and I didn't. I'm very disappointed," admitted the 23-year-old.

Hendrickx was more than six points behind the champion while Swiss 16-year-old Kimmy Repond was third with 192.51 points after a faultless routine to music from British rockers Muse.

Man Poses As Bureaucrat In PM's Office, Case File

The CBI has registered a case against one Ankit Kumar Singh for allegedly impersonating a secretary in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) handling the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency and seeking favours from senior government officials.

The federal agency acted on a complaint from Assistant Director in PMO Anil Kumar Sharma, officials said.

The case has been handed over to the CBI's Special Crime unit, headed by Joint Director Viplav Kumar Choudhry, who was awarded the President Police Medal for distinguished service on Republic Day, they added.

In its complaint, Mr Sharma has accused Mr Singh of claiming himself to be Dinesh Rao, a 1997-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, and posted as a secretary in the PMO who looks after Varanasi district in Uttar Pradesh.

"His mobile number is XXXXXXX098 and he is learnt to have contacted Prabhu Narayan Singh, District Magistrate, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, seeking favours for 'his constituency'. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of impersonation as a PMO official since no official by this name is posted in this office," Mr Sharma said.

Decluttering Queen Marie Kondo Has "Given Up" On Keeping Her House Tidy

Marie Kondo, whose name has come to represent ordering, getting rid of clutter and "sparking pleasure," has acknowledged that even she is not able to maintain a spotless home once her third kid was born in 2021. The queen of organising admitted that she has "sort of given up" on maintaining her home immaculately clean, during a webinar, as per a report in the Washington Post.

"My home is messy, but the way I am spending my time is the right way for me at this time at this stage of my life," she was quoted as saying by the outlet.

"Up until now, I was a professional tidier, so I did my best to keep my home tidy at all times," she stated. Ms Kondo said that she realises what is important to her now. "I have kind of given up on that in a good way for me. Now I realise what is important to me is enjoying spending time with my children at home," Ms Kondo added.

The author's organising technique, known as the KonMari method, helped her many followers empty their homes of clutter and, in Ms Kondo's opinion, change their lives. As a result, she became well-known across the globe. She wrote a book on the technique and Netflix even made a series on it.

She further said, "Tidying our homes, tidying our environment is also a way of tidying our minds." Ms Kondo asserted that by organising our hearts and brains, it becomes evident what we truly desire and added that they are the things she is now struggling with.

"In 1962...": S Jaishankar's China Dig At Rahul Gandhi On "Territory Loss"

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar today claimed the land that opposition leaders say has been occupied by China "was in fact occupied in 1962", in a reference to the war when Jawaharlal Nehru was prime minister. He also took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who recently spoke about an official report on loss of territory in Ladakh.

"Sometimes they spread news that they know is false. They project as if it happened just now, when it, in fact, happened in 1962... They won't talk about that," he said, referring, according to news agency ANI, to China's version of events. His "they" reference may have been to opposition leaders' recent remarks too.

On loss of territory, recently Rahul Gandhi was among those who cited a report by a senior police officer in Ladakh that said India has lost access to 26 of 65 patrolling points in Eastern Ladakh. The report was filed at a conference of the country's top police officers in Delhi, attended by PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

But Mr Jaishankar sought to counter it, speaking at the Saturday event in Pune.

"Also, if I would need to know something (on China), I won't go to the Chinese ambassador to get inputs, but to my military leadership," he added, furthering the dig by referring to Rahul Gandhi's 2017 meeting with the envoy when the two countries were in a standoff.

Mr Gandhi had clarified at the time: "It is my job to be informed on critical issues. I met the Chinese Ambassador, (India's) Ex-NSA (National Security Adviser), Congress leaders from NE (North East) and the Bhutanese ambassador."

At the Pune event, the Foreign Minister also spoke about overseas news outlets using adjectives such as "Hindu nationalist" for India's BJP government. "In America or Europe, they won't say Christian Nationalist... these adjectives are reserved for us," he said.

He added that he is proud of it. "If you look at the last nine years, there is no doubt that government and politics of the day are more nationalistic... I don't think there is anything to be apologetic about it," said the minister, speaking in Hindi, at the release of 'Bharat Marg', the Marathi translation of his book 'The India Way'

His comments on foreign media come when there is a row over a BBC documentary on the PM, 'The Modi Question', that speaks about the 2002 Gujarat riots, when he was Chief Minister, and the BJP's allegedly communal politics.

The central government has denounced the two-part docu-series as a "propaganda piece" designed to push a discredited narrative.

In his remarks in Pune, Mr Jaishankar did not speak on this specifically, but said that "everyone in the country is connected with PM Modi during India's G20 presidency".

India has got the headship of the international group for a year as part of a rotation system.

Pakistan Finance Minister Says Allah Responsible For Country's Prosperity

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday said Pakistan is the only country founded in the name of Islam and Allah is responsible for its development and prosperity, as the cash-strapped nation faced an acute balance of payments crisis.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Green Line Express Train service here, the senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader said that he had full faith that Pakistan would progress because it was created in the name of Islam.

"If Allah can create Pakistan then He can also protect, develop, and make it prosper," Mr Dar said.

The finance minister said, "they are trying their best to improve Pakistan's condition under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's leadership".

Mr Dar reiterated the incumbent government inherited several problems from the previous government led by Imran Khan, adding, the government was working day and night.

"The team is trying to improve the situation ahead of the elections." He said the country is still suffering due to the "drama" that started five years ago and insisted that the economy was strong during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's tenure from 2013-2017.

The finance minister claimed that Pakistan Stock Exchange was the best-performing capital market in South Asia and ranked fifth in the world during Nawaz Sharif's era and the sights of the world institutions were set on it.

Mr Dar said that Pakistan was now paying the price for the "Panama drama", the ouster of the PML-N government, and similar issues it faced over the last five years. "Pakistan was on the growth track during Nawaz's tenure, but it was derailed," he said.

"People can see the destruction the country suffered in the last five years, and they know who has delivered in the past," he added.

Facing an acute balance of payments crisis, Pakistan is desperate to secure much-needed external financing, with less than three weeks' worth of import cover in its foreign exchange reserves, which fell USD 923 million to USD 3.68 billion.

Pakistan secured a USD 6 billion IMF bailout in 2019. It was topped up with another USD 1.1 billion in 2022 to help the country following the unprecedented floods. But the IMF suspended disbursements in November due to Pakistan's failure to make more progress on fiscal consolidation amidst political turmoil in the country.

Meanwhile, the Washington-based global lender announced on Thursday that it was sending a staff mission to Islamabad this month to discuss resuming the bailout programme.

Despite repeated claims by the finance minister, who replaced Miftah Ismail, to bring the dollar rate under Rs 200, the greenback surged to a record high of Rs 268.30 in the interbank market.

The Pakistani rupee extended its downward trend on Friday with the local currency plunging over Rs 12 against the US dollar in the interbank market as the government eased its control over the currency in order to convince the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to release pending loan tranche.

The local unit was trading at Rs 268.30 compared to Thursday's close of Rs 255.43 in the interbank market.

A day earlier, the rupee shed 24.11 in the interbank market, falling as low as Rs 255.43 to the dollar. The 9.6 per cent decline is the second-biggest drop in a single session.

Hyderabad University Students Screen BBC Series On PM, 'The Kashmir Files'

The Students Federation of India (SFI) on Thursday organised the screening of the controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) here even as the RSS' student wing, ABVP showed the controversial film 'The Kashmir Files', on the campus.

The Fraternity Movement in UoH campus, a students' group, had earlier organised the screening of the BBC documentary "India: The Modi Question" on January 21, at the varsity campus without prior notice or permission, prompting the University authorities to seek a report on the incident for taking necessary action.

The screening of the documentary "India: The Modi Question", the access to which was recently blocked by the Centre on social media platforms, was earlier announced by the SFI at the university campus.

"Glimpses from the successful screening of the documentary 'India: The Modi Question' organised by SFI HCU on the Republic Day following the call of SFI CEC. More than 400 students turned up for the screening, rejecting the false propaganda and the attempts of ABVP to create unrest and the administration to disrupt the screening of the documentary. SFI-HCU salutes the student community who have stood for freedom of expression and campus democracy," a social media post by SFI HCU said, tagging the photos.

UoH, is also known as Hyderabad Central University (HCU).

Countering it, the students of ABVP HCU organised the screening of 'The Kashmir Files,' on the university campus today.

Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the Bollywood film depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir following systematic killings of people from the community by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

UoH Registrar Devesh Nigam in a statement said the Dean-Students' Welfare had counselled the student groups and issued an appeal not to do any screening of films in view of the law and order issue, maintaining peace and tranquility in campus and forthcoming end semester exams starting from next week.

However, students decided to go ahead with their programme schedule.

"We have come to know that one group held the screening in one of the hostels," he said adding the campus is peaceful.

Earlier, a group of ABVP members staged a protest in front of the main gate of the varsity and raised slogans against the University administration alleging that the security personnel did not allow them to enter the varsity premises along with the screening equipment.

They held a sit-in and sought to know from the University administration how permission was granted to the SFI to screen the BBC documentary and said they will not allow its screening.

"The University Administration tried to stop the screening of the movie 'The Kashmir Files'. When ABVP Karyakartas were bringing the projector from the main gate, University Security manhandled our Karyakartas. There was another attempt by the administration to seize our projector. We protested at the main gate and we have arranged everything for the screening. We appeal to the student community to join us in large numbers at Ambedkar Chowk (North ShopCom)," a social media post by the ABVP HCU said.

The Union government had last week directed social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube to block links to the documentary "India: The Modi Question". The Ministry of External Affairs has trashed the documentary as a "propaganda piece" that lacks objectivity and reflects a colonial mindset.

The two-part documentary claims it investigated certain aspects relating to the 2002 Gujarat riots when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state.

"Have To Accept Reality": Future Retail Chairman Kishore Biyani Resigns

Kishore Biyani has stepped down from the suspended board of Future Retail and has resigned as chairman and director of the company, which is currently facing insolvency proceedings before the NCLT.

In his emotional farewell, Kishore Biyani, who was associated with Future Retail Ltd (FRL) since 2007 when it was incorporated, said it was facing CIRP (Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process) as a "result of unfortunate business situation".

"While the company was always my passion and I have done everything in my power for its growth, I have to accept reality and move on," said Kishore Biyani in his resignation letter to the resolution professional of the company.

The letter, a copy of which was shared with the stock exchanges, said: "As I understand, I have completed all the required handholding within my capacity for you to take over the entire control of the company and its assets and I have also completed the handover of whatever information and data, which was available with the earlier management or which could be retrieved from ex-employees or third parties and have shared with you all the insight about the business and operations and various hurdles faced by the earlier management."

FRL, in a regulatory filing, informed that Kishore Biyani has "tendered a letter of his resignation from the position of the "Executive Chairman and Director" of the company. His resignation "shall be placed before the Committee of Creditors, as per the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016", the company added.

The resolution professional of Future Retail Ltd (FRL) has received intimation through an e-mail on January 24, 2023.

Kishore Biyani, who was also known as a retail tsar in India, is known as the pioneer of modern retail in India, who took the modern brick & mortar format among the masses. FRL operated multiple retail formats in both the hypermarket supermarket and home segments under brands such as Big Bazaar, Easyday, Foodhall. At its peak, FRL was operating over 1,500 outlets in nearly 430 cities.

Kishore Biyani (61) has also assured to cooperate with the lenders.

"Needless to say, that in spite of my resignation, I would be available for all possible help, which can be done by me with my limited resources and ability to resolve any issue related to the company," he said.

FRL was dragged into insolvency proceedings by its lender Bank of India after it defaulted on loans.

The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal had on July 2022 directed to initiate insolvency against FRL.

It was part of the 19 Future group companies operating in the retail, wholesale, logistic and warehousing segments, which were supposed to be transferred to Reliance Retail as part of a Rs 24,713-crore deal announced in August 2020.

However, lenders had rejected the takeover of the 19 Future group companies, including FRL, by Reliance amid a legal challenge by Amazon.

As many as 13 companies including Reliance Retail, Adani Group's JV April Moon Retail and 11 other companies have made it to the final list of prospective bidders for acquiring FRL.

Last year in August, stock market regulator Sebi had ordered a forensic audit of the accounts of FRL for the financial years 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has also asked for an audit of FRL's Related Party Transactions (RPT) with three other Future group firms -- Future Enterprises Ltd, Future Consumer Ltd and Future Supply Chain Solutions Ltd.

RPT refers to a deal or arrangement made between two parties related to each other by having a pre-existing business relation or common interest.

Study Says Earth's Inner Core May Have Started Spinning Other Way

Research says that Earth's solid inner core, a hot iron ball has stopped paused its rotation and started to spin in the opposite direction.

The earth's core is roughly 5,000 kilometres (3,100 miles) below the surface we live on, this "planet within the planet" can spin independently because it floats in the liquid metal outer core, an AFP report said.

Exactly how the inner core rotates has been a matter of debate between scientists -- and the latest research is expected to prove controversial.

What little we know about the inner core comes from measuring the tiny differences in seismic waves -- created by earthquakes or sometimes nuclear explosions -- as they pass through the middle of the Earth.

Seeking to track the inner core's movements, new research published in the journal Nature Geoscience analysed seismic waves from repeating earthquakes over the last six decades.

The study's authors, Xiaodong Song and Yi Yang of China's Peking University, said they found that the inner core's rotation "came to a near halt around 2009 and then turned in an opposite direction".

"We believe the inner core rotates, relative to the Earth's surface, back and forth, like a swing," they told AFP.

"One cycle of the swing is about seven decades", meaning it changes direction roughly every 35 years, they added.

They said it previously changed direction in the early 1970s and predicted the next about-face would be in the mid-2040s.

The researchers said this rotation roughly lines up with changes in what is called the "length of day" -- small variations in the exact time it takes Earth to rotate on its axis.

So far there is little to indicate that what the inner core does has many effects on surface dwellers.

But the researchers said they believed there are physical links between all of Earth's layers, from the inner core to the surface.

"We hope our study can motivate some researchers to build and test models which treat the whole Earth as an integrated dynamic system," they said.

Experts not involved in the study expressed caution about its findings, pointing to several other theories and warning that many mysteries remain about the centre of the Earth.

"This is a very careful study by excellent scientists putting in a lot of data," said John Vidale, a seismologist at the University of Southern California.

"(But) none of the models explain all the data very well in my opinion," he added.

Vidale published research last year suggesting the inner core oscillates far more quickly, changing direction every six years or so. His work was based on seismic waves from two nuclear explosions in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

That timeframe is around the point when Monday's research says the inner core last changed direction -- which Vidale called "kind of a coincidence".

Another theory -- which Vidale said has some good evidence supporting it -- is that the inner core only significantly moved between 2001 to 2013 and has stayed put since.

Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, has published research suggesting that the inner core's cycle is every 20 to 30 years, rather than the 70 proposed in the latest study.

"These mathematical models are most likely all incorrect because they explain the observed data but are not required by the data," Tkalcic said.

"Therefore, the geophysical community will be divided about this finding and the topic will remain controversial."

He compared seismologists to doctors "who study the internal organs of patients' bodies using imperfect or limited equipment".

Lacking something like a CT scan, "our image of the inner Earth is still blurry", he said, predicting more surprises ahead.

That could include more about a theory that the inner core might have yet another iron ball inside it -- like a Russian doll.

"Something's happening and I think we're gonna figure it out," Vidale said.

"But it may take a decade."

Google Engineer On Being Laid Off Via Email After 20 Years Of Service

Tech giant Google is laying off 12,000 employees, or 6 per cent of its workforce. Impacted by the job cut, a software engineer named Jeremy Joslin working in the tech giant since 2003 was laid off. The company gave him the news over an email.

In a tweet, Mr Joslin wrote, "It's hard for me to believe that after 20 years at #Google I unexpectedly find out about my last day via an email. What a slap in the face. I wish I could have said goodbye to everyone face to face."

In a LinkedIn post, Mr Joslin added, "I never thought it would happen like this."

On Friday, Google and Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai shared the difficult news with its employees. "We've decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We've already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices," the message read.

Mr Pichai said, "Over the past two years we've seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today."

Alphabet's job losses affect teams across the company including recruiting and some corporate functions, as well as some engineering and products teams.

The news comes during a period of economic uncertainty as well as technological promise.

"Bogey About Will Of People": Former Judge On Government Vs Judiciary

Union law minister Kiren Rijiju's argument today that judges are not answerable to people the way elected representatives are, was brushed aside by Justice Deepak Gupta, retired judge of the Supreme Court. Such statements undermine the independence and strength of the judiciary," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview. The current system, he added, exists because it was the one envisaged by the fathers of the constitution.

"That is the way we have chosen in our constitution for our judiciary to be. Unlike the American judiciary where at the district level, a lot of people are elected," he said.

Amid the government versus judiciary debate, Mr Rijiju has again underscored that while judges are not elected and are not under public scrutiny, their judgments are being watched and assessed by the people, who, he added, now have a voice thanks to social media.

Justice Gupta pointed out that the Supreme Court Collegium, which appoints judges -- a process in which the government wants a bigger role -- is never an election issue.   Moreover, in most countries judges are not elected for the highest courts, he said.

"This is not an argument really. It is no argument that we get elected so we represent the voice of the people. See, this bogey which is being raised about the will of the people -- I think let it be made clear that even the ruling government does not have the strength in numbers to say they present the will of the people," Justice Deepak Gupta said.

The government, he pointed out, only got 35 per cent of the votes cast and if the total electorate be counted, the number drops to 25 per cent.

Justice Gupta questioned if the law minister's statement was the result of the Collegium's unprecedented move to make public the government's reasons for rejecting various names of judges. "Maybe they were rocked by what the Collegium has done," he said.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court had uploaded its letters to the Centre on its website, refuting all of government's objections.

Free Movement Visas For Indians In Trade Deal? What UK Minister Said

The India-UK free trade agreement (FTA) is expected to be clinched this year but it won't involve any boost of free movement visa offers for Indians, British trade minister in charge of the negotiations has said.

Kemi Badenoch, who was in New Delhi last month to kick off the sixth round of FTA talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, said that former prime minister Boris Johnson's "deal by Diwali" deadline last year was not feasible and had to be changed.

In an interview with 'The Times' recently, the UK Secretary of State for Trade also ruled out any major similarities between the FTA the UK had struck with Australia - one of the first post-Brexit trade deals - and that with India.

"We left the EU (European Union) because we didn't believe in free movement, we didn't think it was working. This is not a deal that's negotiating some kind of free movement with India," Badenoch told the newspaper, with reference to more visa offers.

The minister indicated a willingness to make concessions on issues like business mobility, but ruled out the prospect of Indians getting the same kind of deal as with Australia - which allows under-35s to live and work in the UK for three years.

The reciprocal UK-India Young Professionals Scheme, formally launched earlier this month, is seen as overcoming this hurdle by annually offering 3,000 18 to 30-year-old graduates visas to live and work in either country for up to two years.

"We have to make sure that each trade agreement we sign is tailored to the specific country. The kind of mobility offer I can do to a country like Australia is not going to be the same kind of mobility offer I can do with a country like India, which has got many times the population," said Badenoch.

"And what people from the UK want to do when they travel to Australia is probably slightly different from what they do when they travel to India, and vice versa as well," she told 'The Times'.

Distancing from the previous Tory government's approach of deadline-bound FTA negotiations as "unhelpful", Badenoch reiterated the Rishi Sunak led government's more flexible approach going forward.

"The 'deal by Diwali' mantra is one of the things I have changed since becoming Trade Secretary. I tell people it's about the deal, not the day. I think that having a fixed day where everything needs to be completed is not helpful in a negotiation because the other party can run down the clock," she said.

Johnson had set a Diwali 2022 deadline for the FTA during his prime ministerial visit to India in April last year. However, amid major political upheavals in the UK, that deadline fell by the wayside and most ministers have since been reluctant to set a fresh timeframe.

"I do think a deal this year. I don't know when. But after a while if things don't conclude then people just move on, on both sides. I'm very keen to sign a deal this year," said Badenoch.

According to official UK government data, India-UK bilateral trade currently stands at around GBP 29.6 billion a year. Both sides formally launched FTA negotiations at the start of last year, with Sunak committing to working "at pace" towards an FTA that does not "sacrifice quality for speed" after that October 2022 Diwali deadline was missed.

Curious Case Of Daler Mehndi Thanking Prince Harry Over His Music

Singer Daler Mehndi has thanked Prince Harry for mentioning him in the memoir, "Spare", and how his songs helped the Duke of Sussex whenever he "felt alone and separated" from family.

Only that the tweet about Prince Harry kicking back to Daler Mehndi's songs is one big parody.

Daler Mehndi does not appear to know it though, even a day after he tweeted his thanks.

"I am grateful to the blessings of Guru Nanak, my mom and dad. I created a unique pop folk ethnic music style. Love you Prince Harry! God bless you. In gratitude that my music helped you," the Punjabi singer tweeted, along with a screenshot of the comical tweet that said Prince Harry mentioned about Daler Mehndi's song in his memoir.

Many people commented they did not want to tell the singer that he has fallen for a fake tweet as it could upset him.

Others said Daler Mehndi probably knows it is a fake tweet and he is only playing along as he added more tweets to the thread about his career.

"In 1995 I made Bolo Tara Ra. My fans made it a super duper hit. Today in 2023, Team India made it the song of victory jeet ke bolo tara ra ra. Can't thank Baba Nanak enough," the singer tweeted in the same thread.

Some Twitter users discussed among themselves if they should tell the singer that it was a fake tweet.

"I don't think we should tell him. This is the cutest acceptance speech ever," said freelance columnist Jas Oberoi.

After months of anticipation and a blanket publicity blitz, Prince Harry's book "Spare" went on sale last week as royal insiders hit back at his scorching revelations.

In "Spare", Prince Harry portrays his father, 74, as emotionally crippled, the victim of brutal childhood bullying.

Watch: Fan Invades Pitch And Hugs Rohit Sharma, Skipper Nearly Falls

India delivered a clinical performance against New Zealand in the second ODI in Raipur as they won the game by eight wickets to take an unassailable 2-0 in the three-match series. First, Indian bowlers restricted the Blackcaps to just 108 all out in 34.3 overs. Then India captain Rohit Sharma scored a brilliant 51 as India coasted to the target in just 20.1 overs. This is India's seventh consecutive ODI series win at home since 2019. The match was also witness to a strange incident as a kid ran on to the pitch during India's innings with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill at the crease. The boy ran and hugged Rohit Sharma before being taken away by security.

Watch: Young Fan Invades Pitch, Hugs Rohit Sharma During 2nd ODI vs NZ

After coming under a severe assault at the back-end of the New Zealand chase in the first ODI, the Indian bowlers unleashed their fury to skittle out the visitors for 108 in the second ODI at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium, Raipur, on Saturday. The Indian new ball bowlers ran riot on a pitch that had decent grass cover, making use of the favourable bowling conditions on offer. Mohammad Shami was the wreaker-in-chief, scalping three wickets. Hardik Pandya and Washington Sundar picked two wickets each. While Siraj, Kuldeep and Shardul took one wicket each.

Opting to bowl first, the Indian pace attack made sure that the decision to field stood right as they ran through the New Zealand batting lineup, with Shami drawing first blood. The right-arm pacer got the hosts to a flying start, dismissing Finn Allen for a duck.

Mohammed Siraj struck in the sixth over to get rid of Henry Nicholls 2(17), giving the hosts their second breakthrough. The Hyderabad-born speedster has been making the ball talk, putting the batters in a spot of bother with incredible spells in the last few ODIs.

Shami continued to be a menace for the batters as he got rid of Daryl Mitchell 1(3) in the seventh over. The Kiwi batter got a leading edge while looking to play the ball through the on-side and the ball popped up to Shami who completed the catch to add a second wicket to his tally.

"Stay Tuned": Indian-American Nikki Haley Hints At Presidential Run

Prominent Indian-American Republican leader Nikki Haley has said that she thinks she can be the “new leader” who can take the country in a new direction and the United States cannot have a second term under Joe Biden as president.

Speaking to Fox News in an interview on Thursday, the former Governor of South Carolina and US Ambassador to the United Nations, said she is still working things out on any potential presidential run.

"I think, stay tuned. Well, I'm not going to make an announcement here," the 51-year-old leader said when specifically asked if she is going to run for the presidential position.

However, during the interview, Haley hinted that she could be the new leader of the US.

"But when you're looking at a run for president, you look at two things. You first look at, does the current situation push for new leadership? The second question is, am I that person that could be that new leader, that, yes, we need to go in a new direction? And can I be that leader? Yes, I think I can be that leader,” Haley said.

Haley, who resigned from the Trump administration in October 2018, said she did extremely well as governor and ambassador.

"As governor, I took on a hurting state with double-digit unemployment, and we made it the best. As ambassador, I took on the world when they tried to disrespect us. I think I showed what I'm capable of at the United Nations," she asserted.

"So, do I think I could be that leader? Yes. But we are still working through things, and we will figure it out. I have never lost a race. I said that then. I still say that now. I'm not going to lose now. But stay tuned,” Haley said.

Haley, the second governor of Indian descent after fellow Republican Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, said it was time to bring new leadership to the Republican Party.

"We have lost the last seven out of eight popular votes for president. Seven out of eight Republicans have lost. Something is wrong. And so I think it's time that we bring in a new generation that can bring in more people to our party, that can really talk about the solutions that we need to go," she said.

During the interview, Haley also emphasised that President Biden, a Democrat, should not be given a second term. Biden, 80, is the oldest sitting US President.

“If I run, I'm running against Joe Biden. That's what I'm focused on, because we can't have a second term of Joe Biden,” Haley said.

The next US presidential election is scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024.

Haley was not categorical if she would still be running if her former boss decides to contest for the Presidential position again.

"I had a great working relationship with the president. I appreciate all the foreign policy issues we worked on together. But what I will tell you is, the survival of America matters,” Haley said.

"And it's bigger than one person. And when you're looking at the future of America, I think it's time for new generational change. I don't think you need to be 80 years old to go be a leader in DC. I think we need a young generation to come in, step up, and really start fixing things,” she told the news channel.

Haley also slammed her former Cabinet colleague Mike Pompeo, former Secretary of State, who in his recent book alleged that she plotted to replace Mike Pence as Donald Trump's vice president.

In the book, Pompeo said: "I received a call one evening from John Kelly, chief of staff, who apologised for allowing Ambassador Haley to go to the Oval Office. She had not gone there for a personal matter but had entered the Oval Office with the president's daughter Ivanka and her husband Jared. As best Kelly could tell, they were presenting a possible Haley for vice president option. He was certain he had been played." Haley described the allegations as lies.

“No,” she said when asked if that was true.

“Pompeo even says he's not sure if it's true. I never had a conversation with Jared, Ivanka or the president about the vice presidentship. And what I will tell you is, it's really sad when you're having to go out there and put lies and gossip to sell a book,” she said.

“I mean, I don't know why he said it, but that's exactly why I stayed out of DC as much as possible, to get away from the drama and get away from the gossip. I focused on my job. And that's what I always did,” Haley said.

Haley was born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa to immigrant Sikh parents in the US state of South Carolina. Her father, Ajit Singh Randhawa, and her mother, Raj Kaur Randhawa, immigrated to the US from Punjab.

Sack Wrestling Body Chief, Say Athletes Over #MeToo. Wait, Says Minister

Union Sports Minister Anurag Thakur on Thursday assured protesting wrestlers that stern action would be taken if any Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) coach or official is found guilty. Thakur met with the wrestlers including Babita Phogat, Sakchi malik, Bajrang Punia among others after their second day of protest at the Jantar Mantar over allegations of sexual misconduct by Wrestling Federation of India coached and its president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

In the meet, that started around 10 pm on Thursday night, the protesting wrestlers demanded the resignation of Brij Bhushan and disbanding of the WFI. However, Thakur told them to wait for an official reply from the WFI that the sports ministry had sought on Wednesday. However, the wrestlers are not ready to settle at anything less than resignation of the WFI president.

The centre, in a statement on Wednesday, had made it clear that if the WFI does not respond in the next three days, the sports ministry "will proceed to initiate action against the federation in terms of the provisions of the National Sports Development Code, 2011."

Earlier, Vinesh Phogat, the first Indian woman wrestler to win gold in both Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, said that they have not got any 'satisfactory response' from the government.

"Unfortunately we did not get a satisfactory response." "Yesterday, we had 1-2 victims amongst us but now we have 5-6 wrestlers, who were harassed (sexually). We can't name them now, after all they are daughters and sisters of somebody. But if we are forced to disclose their identity, it will be a black day," said Vinesh, the two-time World Championship medallist.

"It's not just about his (Brij Bhushan) resignation. We will send him to jail. We did not want to take the legal route, because we had hoped for resolution but if a proper solution is not provided, we will lodge FIRs against the President. We are World Championship and Olympic medallists, don't suspect us, we are telling the truth, believe us."

Vinesh Phogat had previously alleged that coaches who are favourites of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) misbehave with women wrestlers and harass them. She also accused the WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of sexually exploiting women athletes and calling her a 'khota sikka' after her defeat at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Singh has denied the allegations.

WFI Executive Meet

Also, a meeting of the Executive Committee and the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the WFI is slated to be held on January 22 in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh and its chief Singh will participate. Olympian wrestler Bajrang Punia said:  "Five to six women wrestlers are here with us who have faced these atrocities and we have evidence to prove it."

Earlier, some of the ace wrestlers went to office of Union Sports Ministry in Shashtri Bhawan for a meeting with ministry officials. However, they remained unsatisfied.

Olympic bronze medallist wrestler Sakshi Malik said, "Government did not promise any action, they have only given assurance and we're not happy with the response, we request PM sir to ensure justice."

Former wrestler and Haryana BJP leader Babita Phogat reached the protest site on Thursday to meet the wrestlers as a mediator from the government and assured the grapplers that their demands will be met. "I have assured them that the government is with them. I will try that their issues are resolved today," Babita said.

"Babita Phogat has come from the government's side for mediation. We will speak with her and then give more details," wrestler Bajrang Punia said.

This Country Plans To Kill Entire Population Of Vervet Monkey

Caribbean country Sint Maarten has approved to cull its entire population of vervet monkeys, The Guardian reported. The species has been labelled as a 'nuisance' by locals. The plan to execute monkeys come after farmers complained that the monkeys were "raiding their crops and destroying their livelihood."

However, critics are suggesting that instead of killing the animals, sterilisation or neutering might be a better way to handle the rising numbers of the monkey species, the leading portal reported.

Nature Foundation St Maarten NGO will do the government-funded plan. The NGO will capture the monkey and euthanise more than 450 monkeys in the next three years.

Foundation's manager, Leslie Hickerson told The Guardian, "When a species establishes a population in an area that it isn't native to there are often no predators to keep the population size under control," adding, "Species management is an important aspect of keeping the island healthy for those who come after us."

Vervet monkeys are native to Southern and Eastern Africa and were introduced to the Caribbean country in the 17th century.

Vervet monkey has grey dappled grey-brown bodies and black faces fringed with white fur.

Dave Du Toit, founder of the Vervet Monkey Foundation in South Africa has said that the cull was unlikely to work.

"I think a better approach and more publicly acceptable would be to vasectomise the males and sterilise the females," he said.
