Chandrayaan-3 Leaves Earth's Orbit, Next Stop Is Moon: ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation on Tuesday injected the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft into the translunar orbit.

"Chandrayaan-3 has completed its orbits around the earth and is heading towards the moon," the national space agency headquartered here said.

"A successful perigee-firing performed at ISTRAC (ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network). ISRO has injected the spacecraft into the translunar orbit," it said.

"Next stop: the moon. As it arrives at the moon, the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) is planned for August 5, 2023," it added.

An ISRO official told PTI that following Tuesday's trans-lunar injection (TLI), the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft escaped from orbiting the earth and is now following a path that would take it to the vicinity of the Moon.

In other words, the spacecraft began its journey towards the Moon on Tuesday, after leaving the Earth's orbit following the TLI maneuver, which placed it on 'lunar transfer trajectory'.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had said it would attempt soft landing of the lander on the lunar surface on August 23.

Earlier, the spacecraft's orbit was progressively increased five times after the Chandrayaan-3 mission to Moon was launched on July 14.

Pooran Breaks Internet With Match-Winning 55-Ball 137 In MLC Final

The inaugural edition of the Major League Cricket concluded on Sunday (Monday IST) with MI New York clinching the title against Seattle Orcas in Dallas. The brand MI continued to display its flawless cricketing skills as it added another trophy to its collection. Asked to bat first, the Orcas posted a good total of 183/9 in 20 overs with Quinton de Kock scoring 87 runs. However, the match turned upside down in the second innings as skipper Nicholas Pooran smashed a whopping total of 137 runs off just 55 balls and guided MI New York to victory by seven wickets.

Pooran's massive knock was laced with 13 sixes and 10 boundaries. The most memorable moment of the match came during the 16th over of MI's chase as the West Indies wicketkeeper thrashed Harmeet Singh for 24 runs. That over included a boundary and a stunning hat-trick of sixes.

With this total, the MI skipper also became the highest run-scorer of the MLC 2023 with 388 runs to his name. His knock of 137* was also the highest individual score by any batter in the tournament.

Notably, MI were one down for zero runs on the board during the chase. However, the skipper took the matter into his own hands and played a fearless innings to take his team to the inaugural title.

Talking about the match, no other batter, apart from de Kock, was able to go past the 30-run mark for Seattle Orcas. The bowling duo of Trent Boult and Rashid Khan broke the backbone of Orcas' batting line-up, with their respective three-wicket hauls. Apart from them, Steven Taylor and David Wiese took one wicket each.

Later, MI New York lost two wickets early as openers Steven Taylor and Shayan Jahangir departed for 0 and 10 runs respectively. However, it was Pooran who remained firm and played an extraordinary knock of 137 runs off 55 balls. Apart from him, Dewald Brevis and Tim David scored 20 and 10 runs respectively.

For Seattle Orcas, Imad Wasim and Wayne Parnell scalped one wicket each.

WWF Uses Twitter Bird Logo To Highlight Species Facing Extinction

Last week, Twitter replaced its iconic bird logo with the letter 'X',  marking the latest major shift since Elon Musk's takeover of the social media platform. Twitter, founded in 2006 and whose name is a play on the sound of birds chattering, has used avian branding since its early days.

Needless to say, Elon Musk's Twitter logo rebranding has become the talk of the town, and the subject of viral jokes and memes. Now, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), has used the rebranding of Twitter to talk about wildlife conservation.

The German chapter of the WWF created an impactful graphic that shows the evolution of the blue bird logos over the years. The post drives home the point that some animals are heading for extinction if we don't protect them.

Notably, McCann Germany, an advertising agency, collaborated with WWF to create the graphic and shared it on LinkedIn. When translated into English, the caption of the graphic reads, ''The whole world mourns the loss of the Twitter bird. Around 1 million real animal species are threatened with extinction. Today we are in the midst of the greatest extinction of species since the end of the dinosaur era. A quarter of mammal species, one in eight bird species, more than 30 percent of sharks and rays, and 40 percent of amphibian species are threatened. Help us save the animals. An initiative of WWF Germany & us!''

The text on the graphic, reads, “Protect our animal species before it's too late.”

See the picture here:

British writer Julia Hobsbawm posted this graphic on X and wrote, “Good work from a German ad agency which reads “protect the wildlife before it's too late”.

Reacting to the graphic, one user said, ''You could interpret the meaning a lot of ways. It could be covertly about free speech or it could actually be about protecting wildlife for all I know.''

Another commented, ''Join the wildlife rescue mission before these precious creatures go 'tweet-tweet' into extinction!''

A third said, ''I'd completely forgotten the bird logo was different in Twitter's early years, which in itself is a tribute to the timeless perfection of the final version. On top of everything else wrong with Elon Musk, he's a sheer cultural vandal.''

A fourth wrote, ''Another endangered species, now extinct.''

Were Umpires Right In Ruling Out Stokes' Catch Of Smith? ICC Says This

Team England needed a crucial wicket on the last day of the last Ashes Test to contain Australia and believed they had Australia's star batter Steve Smith close to lunch on Day 5 but the batter was ruled not out. In the 66th over, Smith was batting on 39 and England captain Ben Stokes appeared to have caught the ball at leg gully as it popped off the batter's glove of Moeen Ali's loopy delivery. Umpire Joel Wilson said it was not out and Stokes went for review.

The catch was taken cleanly by Stokes at leg gully as he stretched his right arm but as he moved to celebrate, the ball flew out of his hands and fell down.

Replays appeared to indicate that Stokes realised it wasn't a clean catch since his head dropped right away.

"After numerous replays, Smith was ruled not out as the catch was not perceived to be clean according to law 33.3 of the MCC," the ICC wrote in a report.

"The law states, 'The act of making a catch shall start from the time when the ball first comes into contact with a fielder's person and shall end when a fielder obtains complete control over both the ball and his/her own movement.'

"The incident was similar to Mitchell Starc's catch of Ben Duckett at Lord's but clearer. With this, Smith survived as Australia headed to lunch three down and needing a further 146 runs to win. "

Chris Woakes and Mark Wood provided the early breakthrough on Day 5 of the of the fifth Ashes Test to help England stage a comeback but Australia still have an edge in the crucial math.

Australia were 238/3 at Lunch with Steve Smith (40) and Travis Head (31) standing unbeaten at the crease with the team needing another 146 runs for victory.

Focus Not Just On Ram Temple: PM's "Mantra For 2024" At NDA Meet

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has told the NDA to focus on issues apart from Ram Mandir ahead of the 2024 general elections. At a meeting with MPs from Uttar Pradesh today, the Prime Minister advised the MPs to go local, and "spend more time with the people", sources said.

The MPs who attended the meet -- to be a part of a series of meetings -- were from West Uttar Pradesh, Braj and the Kanpur-Bundelkhand area.

Sources said the Prime Minister has asked the MPs to talk about local issues in their respective constituencies, go to programmes that people attend including weddings.

"PM Modi gave the mantra of 2024 victory to NDA MPs. 'Convince those who are sulky, angry, spend more and more time with the public during elections," a source quoted him as saying.

Invoking 'coalition dharma', he said unlike the UPA, the NDA is about sacrifice, not selfishness, sources said.

As an example, PM Modi cited Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who, he said, was made the Chief Minister despite having fewer MLAs than the BJP but he still ended the coalition and joined the opposition ranks.

"Despite having a good number of MLAs in the government with the Akali Dal in Punjab, the NDA did not ask for the post of Deputy Chief Minister," a source quoted him as saying.

The BJP has divided the 430 MPs of NDA into 11 groups, which will meet PM Modi by turns till August 10.

The next round of meetings will be held on Wednesday, in which 96 MPs from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep will participate.

The meetings are meant to ensure greater cohesion and synergy within the alliance ahead of the election.

Senior party leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and BJP chief JP Nadda are expected to be part of the meetings.

Father Dies, 4-Year-Old Injured After Bouncy Castle Shot Into Air In France

A father died and his four-year-old daughter was badly injured in France after a bouncy castle in which they were playing at a water park was blown skyward by high winds, prosecutors said Monday.

The 35-year-old man had been taken to hospital with his child after the accident on Sunday at the water park in Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume in France's southern Var region, hugely popular with tourists in the summer. He died later that day.

The structure, some 20 metres (65 feet) long, lifted 50 metres off the ground at the Wonderland Waterpark, with both victims trapped inside, the prosecutor for the nearby town of Draguignan said in a statement.

The daughter's life remains in danger, the prosecutor's office added. It said the bouncy castle had taken off due to "strong gusts of wind" that were buffeting the area at the time after a spell of hot weather.

An investigation has been opened into involuntary homicide.

Draguignan prosecutor Guy Bouchet told AFP that the management of the park had taken the decision to suspend the bouncy castle activity due to the weather at the very moment the accident happened.

"How can a water park that had been accepted on the municipal territory to bring joy and happiness to children be transformed into a machine of death that strikes down an entire family?" the local mayor Alain Decanis wrote on Facebook.

He vowed the investigation opened by prosecutors would provide answers. The child, like her father, had to be resuscitated after suffering cardiac arrest.

The Wonderland Waterpark opened only this summer some 40 kilometres (25 miles) outside the town of Aix-en-Provence.

In Indore, Amit Shah Reaches Out To Party Workers, Congress To Tribals

The BJP organised a mega gathering of its booth-level workers in Indore today, which was addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This was his third visit in less than 20 days. A few kilometers away, senior Congress leaders, including two former Chief Ministers Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath, as well as ex-JNUSU president-turned-NSUI's national in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar, addressed an Adivasi Yuva Mahapanchayat.

Addressing the BJP workers, Mr Shah urged them to aim for victory in 2023, which breaks all previous records of assembly poll victories. He also urged the BJP's booth-level workers to fight hard in the next general elections to ensure Narendra Modi's third term as Prime Minister.

"It is not the leaders sitting on this stage, who win the elections for the BJP. It is our booth-level workers who win us the polls," he said.

Terming PM Modi as the "Messiah of Poor" for starting a large number of pro-poor schemes, Mr Shah said Congress, while being in power for 70 years in the state, didn't do anything for the poor.

He also took a dig at the previous Congress governments headed by Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath, comparing their works with the achievements of the BJP governments over 18 years in the state -- particularly during the double engine BJP governments at the Centre and in the state.

"No new industry was started in the 15-month regime of Corruption Nath, as only the Transfer Industry (18,000 Class I officers were transferred in Mr Nath's 15-month regime) flourished. Whatever new industry has been established is the result of the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in the state," Mr Shah said.

He also raised the issues of surgical strikes on Pakistan soil, Ram Temple construction in Ayodhya and the abrogation of Article 370.

Meanwhile, addressing an Adivasi Yuva Mahapanchayat, former Chief Ministers Digvijaya Singh and Kamal Nath assured that all demands raised by the tribal youths through a "Maang-Patra" at the Mahapanchayat on Sunday will be included in the party's poll manifesto.

Lashing out at the BJP and its leaders, Kanhaiya Kumar accused the party of pitting tribals against non-tribals in Manipur, which has been witnessing ethnic violence since May. He also questioned the country's first tribal President Droupadi Murmu's silence over tribal women being paraded naked in Manipur.

He also targeted state home minister Narottam Mishra, saying "instead of zeroing on what Deepika Padukone is wearing in a movie, you (Mishra) should be concerned about what is happening to women, tribals and Dalits in Madhya Pradesh".

Indore serves as the hub for the 66 seats in the state's western and south-western regions, known as the Malwa-Nimar area.

Over the years, the party that won the 66-seat Malwa-Nimar (MP region with the most seats) has gone on to form the state government.

The BJP swept the region in 2013, capturing 57 of the 66 seats, while the Congress trailed far behind with only nine. The Congress, however, turned the tables on the BJP five years later, gaining 36 seats.

The BJP could only win 27 seats, with three seats going to Congress rebels running as Independents.

Prince William Serves Burgers To Shocked Diners. There's An India Connect

Britain's Prince William served up a surprise to diners in south London when he dished out environmentally-friendly burgers from a food truck.

In a video released on Sunday, the heir to the throne handed out "Earthshot Burgers" to highlight the work of last year's winners of his annual Earthshot Prize, which he set up to help develop solutions to major environmental problems.

"Coming right up," the prince said as he served up the burgers to the stunned customers. "Morning everyone, nicely cooked, ready to go."

The object for William, who had teamed up with the founders of the YouTube channel Sorted Food which reviews kitchen gadgets and shares recipes, was to raise the profile and work of three previous Earthshot prize winners.

"So the box you're about to eat in is built by a company called Notpla and there's no plastic involved, they've come up with a seaweed coating," the prince told the customers at the burger van.

"The ingredients inside the burger are grown from a greenhouse in India from a company called Kheyti, and last but not least, the way we cook them has been on a thing called Mukuru Clean Stoves, and that is designed by a lady in Kenya who came up with the concept to reduce air pollution."

He added: "Can't vouch for the taste, the quality but ... I'm rolling with it."

Broad and Anderson are two icons of England cricket who have donned the whites together for a long time. As Anderson remains an active player, Broad decided that it was time for him to move on.

Mother Of Woman Stripped In Manipur Wants To See Bodies Of Son, Husband

The mother of one of the two women paraded naked by a mob in Manipur on May 4 urged the MPs of opposition coalition INDIA to help her see the bodies of her husband and son, who were also killed on that day.

A delegation of 21 MPs from the opposition bloc is on a two-day visit to the state, and meeting people affected by the violence.

When Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev and DMK MP Kanimozhi met the mother of one of the victims, she urged them to help her at least see the bodies of her son and husband.

She also told the two leaders the situation is such that Kukis and Meteis, the two warring communities, cannot live together anymore.

"Her daughter was raped, and her husband and son were killed by the mob in the presence of Manipur Police but till today, not a single police officer has been suspended," Ms Dev told PTI-Video.

"They have got a huge shock. They are saying that there was a mob of more than 1,000 people, and they have made a specific demand, which I will raise with the governor," she said.

The girl alleged that she was raped in front of the police, but nothing was done to help her, she added.

Ms Dev claimed that the girl is scared of the police now. "If a victim does not trust the police anymore then it is a constitutional crisis." Kanimozhi said the victim's father served in the Army and protected the nation, but could not protect his family.

"It is so sad to see a woman whose daughter was raped. She lost her husband and her son on the same day and there is no justice for them," she said.

The viral video of the May 4 incident renewed the national attention on Manipur, where violence broke out nearly three months ago, killing over 160 people since then, and injuring hundreds.

The violence erupted on May 3 after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mainly in the hill districts.

As Hardik Pandya came out at the toss for the second ODI against West Indies in Barbados, there was anticipation in the air. Judge Throws Out Donald Trump's $475 Million Defamation Suit Against CNN

A federal judge has dismissed a $475 million defamation lawsuit that Donald Trump filed against CNN for describing his claim that the 2020 election was stolen as the "Big Lie."

Trump, in the suit filed in a US District Court in Florida in October, had alleged that the use of the phrase by the cable television news network associated the former US president with tactics used by Adolf Hitler.

US District Court Judge Raag Singhal, who was appointed by Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, tossed out the suit on Friday.

"There is no question that the statements made by CNN meet the publication requirement for defamation under Florida law," Singhal said in his ruling.

"The next question is whether the statements were false statements of fact," the judge said. "This is where Trump's defamation claims fail.

"The complained of statements are opinion, not factually false statements, and therefore are not actionable," Singhal said. "CNN's statements, while repugnant, were not, as a matter of law, defamatory.

"The case will, therefore, be dismissed."

In his defamation complaint, Trump said the network's use of the phrase the "Big Lie" was a "deliberate effort by CNN to propagate to its audience an association between the plaintiff and one of the most repugnant figures in modern history."

Trump had a caustic relationship with CNN and other major news outlets like The New York Times during his White House term, branding them "fake news" and repeatedly raging against them on social media.

The twice-impeached Trump, who has continued to insist falsely that he won the 2020 presidential election against Democrat Joe Biden, is to go on trial in Florida in May on charges of mishandling top secret government documents.

Trump is also facing dozens of felony charges in a case involving hush money payments to a porn star in New York and is bracing for indictment in separate state and federal investigations into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Wasim Jaffer's Hilarious Meme On India's Batting Order vs WI Wins Internet

Skipper Rohit Sharma and senior pro Virat Kohli, who have 76 international hundreds between them, decided to give game time to middle-order batters as India beat West Indies by five wickets in the opening ODI, riding on exploits from spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. After Jadeja (3/37 in 6 overs) and Kuldeep (4/6 in 4 overs) set it up beautifully, shooting out the Windies for 114 in 23 overs, Ishan Kishan helped himself to a half-century (52 off 46 balls) in India's successful chase in just 22.5 overs.

It is interesting to note that the pair of Kishan and Shubman Gill opened the innings for India in the paltry chase of 115 despite skipper Rohit also being available to bat. After Gill fell, Suryakumar Yadav was sent in at number 3 with Virat Kohli staying in the dugout. Hardik Pandya came in at the fourth position while Ravindra Jadeja batted at the fifth position. Rohit came only after the fifth wicket fell down.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer posted a funny tweet describing India's batting order against West Indies in the first ODI.

See the post here:

The Indian team will be expected to return to its set batting order as it aims to put up a much-improved show with the willow and take an unassailable lead in the three-match series when it faces a below-par West Indies in the second ODI in Barbados on Saturday.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid did face a minor hiccup while trying out the middle-order batters upfront on a track that became a raging turner during the second session but a meager target of 115 meant that things were smooth for the better part.

However, one can vouch with a degree of certainty that even if India once again chases a small target, Rohit Sharma will indeed come out with Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli will be seen padded to come at one drop.

Several Hundred Credit Suisse Bankers To Get Termination Notices: Report

Several hundred Credit Suisse investment bankers will soon be fired as UBS begins to implement the merger of the two banks, the Swiss weekly HandelsZeitung said Friday.

UBS agreed to buy its rival in a hastily arranged 3-billion-franc ($3.5 billion) fire sale over a March weekend by Swiss authorities afraid that a weakened Credit Suisse would go bankrupt, with speculation rife since about the impact on jobs.

HandelsZeitung said that according to its sources UBS chief executive Sergio Ermotti wants to rapidly get to work on eliminating the huge amount of duplication in their operations.

"The transformation is beginning: in the coming days several hundred Credit Suisse bankers will receive termination notices," said the weekly.

It noted that the Swiss media have speculated about between 30,000 and 35,000 job cuts across the world.

At the end of last year, the two banks had around 120,000 employees between them across the world, including 37,000 in Switzerland.

UBS declined to comment when contacted by AFP.

Minor Raped Near Madhya Pradesh Shrine, Bite Marks Found All Over Body

An 11-year-old girl has been brutally gang-raped and was found covered in blood, with bite marks all over her body, in a jungle near a famous temple in Madhya Pradesh this morning, police said. The condition of the girl is said to be serious.

An official said two people have been arrested and one of the accused works at a cow shelter run by the temple management committee.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has directed the police to take strict action against the accused and ensure the survivor gets the best possible medical treatment.

Police said the girl went missing last evening and, when she didn't get home till late in the night, her family informed the police and began searching for her. She was found in a jungle about a kilometre from her home in Arkandi township under Maihar police station in Satna district this morning.

The jungle is close to a temple of Goddess Sharda in Maihar town, which attracts pilgrims from across the country.

The family informed the police and took the girl to the Maihar Civil Hospital. News of the incident spread in the village, leading to an angry crowd reaching the hospital. Police and district officials also rushed there and prevented the situation from escalating.

"We received information this morning about the girl being found. Our investigation has confirmed that she was raped. Two suspects have been arrested and are in police custody. A medical examination is being conducted. The survivor has been referred to the Rewa Medical College," said Maihar sub-divisional police officer Lokesh Dabar.

While Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he was distressed by the incident, state Congress President Kamal Nath hit out at the government and said it has failed to provide security to women in the state.

"I have received information about the rape in Maihar. My heart is full of pain, I am distressed. The police have arrested the criminals. Instructions have been given to the administration to make arrangements for proper treatment of the girl.  No criminal will be spared, strictest action will be taken," Mr Chouhan tweeted.

Attacking the government, Mr Nath tweeted, "The incident of rape with a little girl in Maihar is highly condemnable. Reports are emerging of inhuman behaviour with the girl, as was done in the Nirbhaya gangrape case. Such incidents, which are happening regularly to girls in the state, prove that the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government has completely failed in providing security to our sisters and daughters."

He also demanded that the chief minister ensure that the girl gets the best possible treatment and that she is given financial assistance of Rs 1 crore immediately.

Watch: Yusuf Pathan Turns Back Clock, Slams 3 Sixes Against Mohammad Amir

Yusuf Pathan rolled back the years and how, as he produced plenty of big hits and entertainment at the Harare Sports Club, to help the Joburg Buffaloes storm into the finals of the Zim Cyber City Zim Afro T10, after defeating the Durban Qalandars by 6 wickets in Qualifier 1. Yusuf scored an unbeaten 80 from 26 deliveries as the Buffaloes chased down a record total on Friday. Put into bat first, the Durban Qalandars, who had finished top of the table in the league stage, had a slow start, losing the in-form Tim Seifert for 11 in the third over, with the score on 16. That though would kick start a fantastic as Mirza Tahir Baig and Andre Fletcher went through the gears against the Joburg Buffaloes' bowling.

While it was Fletcher, who was finding the boundaries with more regularity, Baig ensured he kept the scoreboard moving at his end. The duo put on a 49-run stand for the second wicket in quick time before Baig was dismissed in the 6th over for 20 by Victor Nyauchi. A short while later, George Linde departed for 1, and that was followed by the big scalp of Fletcher for 39 off 14 deliveries.

That brought the due of Asif Ali and Nick Welch to the middle in the death overs, and they piled on the runs at good pace. Both hammered a six each and smashed 8 boundaries between themselves, as the Qalandars' total soared over the 100-run mark, to stop at 140/4 in their 10 overs. At that point, it was the highest total in an innings during the course of the tournament.

In response, the Joburg Buffaloes did not quite have the start they needed. Mohammad Hafeez and Tom Banton, both big hitters were looking to tee off from the get-go, as required, but the Qalandars' bowlers had other ideas.

They tied up the batters with some fantastic bowling, which led to Hafeez (17) becoming the first wicket for the Qalandars. Soon after, Banton (4) was cleaned up by Tayyab Abbas, who would also go on to dismiss the dangerous Will Smeed (16) a little later in the fifth over. At that time the score read 56/3, with the Qalandars well and truly in the ascendency.

Ravi Bopara could only add 1 to the cause before Tendai Chatara had his number, after which Yusuf Pathan and Mushfiqur Rahim came together, with quite the task on hand. After the duo absorbed the pressure, Yusuf broke free against Mohammad Amir in the 8th over, smashing him for 3 sixes and a boundary, in what was a 25-run over, and took the Buffaloes over the 100-run mark. In the final two overs, the Buffaloes would need 39 to win.

Yusuf completed his fifty in the 9th over, and then continued to put the long handle to good use, much to the joy of the fans. In the final over, the Buffaloes needed 20 to win with Yusuf going great guns.

The Indian batter was absolutely rolling back the years with a vintage knock, and continued in his merry ways in the final over, beginning as he smashed two fours and two sixes, finishing off the game with a boundary to help the Buffaloes storm into the final of the Zim Afro T10.

11 Women Pooled Money To Buy Rs 250 Lottery Ticket. They Won Rs 10 Crore

Some did not even carry Rs 25 in their purse when they decided to pool money to buy a lottery ticket worth Rs 250 weeks ago.

One of them had even borrowed the meagre amount from an acquaintance to try her luck.

But, the 11 women, members of Haritha Karma Sena, the green army under the Parappanangadi Municipality, never dreamt of making a windfall which would turn them into crorepati in a stroke.

They were announced the winners of the monsoon bumper of whopping Rs 10 crore, by the Kerala lottery Department following a draw held on Wednesday.

"We have purchased lottery tickets before by pooling money. But this is the first time we have won a mega prize," an elated Radha, who bought the ticket after pooling money from her colleagues, said.

Another woman said they were eagerly waiting for the draw but felt sad after someone told them that a ticket sold in neighbouring Palakkad had won the first prize.

"The excitement and happiness knew no bounds when we finally came to know that we hit the jackpot. All of us are facing hardships in life and the money will be a relief to some extent to solve our problems," she said.

The women have a tough time making ends meet and the humble salary they draw as members of the Haritha Karma Sena is the only income of their families.

Haritha Karma Sena is engaged in collection of non-biodegradable waste from households and establishments, which is sent to shredding units for recycling.

Sheeja, the chairman of Haritha Karma Sena consortium at the Municipality, said the lady luck smiled on the most deserving people this time.

She said all the winners are very hardworking and only source of income for their families.

"Many have debts to pay... have daughters to marry off... or have to meet the treatment expenditure of near ones. They are living in very humble households fighting harsh realities of life," she told PTI.

A large number of people on Thursday flocked to the municipality godown premises here to meet the bumper lottery winners and congratulate them.

"Don't Interfere": Manipur Chief Minister After Mizoram Counterpart's Rally

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh asked his Mizoram counterpart Zoramthanga not to interfere in the internal matters of another state, a day after Zoramthanga participated in a rally to show solidarity with the Kuki tribe in ethnic violence-hit Manipur.

The Mizoram government is sheltering about 13,000 internally displaced Kuki-Zo tribe people who fled from Manipur ever since the clashes broke out in Manipur on May 3. The Mizo tribe has a strong connection with the Kuki-Zo tribe and Chin people of Myanmar.

Over 31,000 Chin refugees from Myanmar are also being sheltered in Mizoram. They fled Myanmar after fierce fighting between the Myanmar army and resistance groups and ethnic rebel groups there.

"Tension began when the state government started to act against drug cartels... The Manipur government is not against the Kuki community who are living in the state," Mr Singh said at an event to mark the Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Organisations representing the Kukis have been accusing the Manipur Chief Minister of working against the interest of the tribe, who are a majority in the hills, while the Meiteis are a majority in the valley.

Mr Singh said his government has been tracking all the incidents that have been happening in Manipur and warned against those who are "trying to destroy the integrity of Manipur".

He said the fight is between the government and elements "who want to disturb peaceful co-existence in the state". He termed as "barbaric" the way rally participants with Zoramthanga in Mizoram's capital Aizawl shouted abusive slogans against him.

"I ask the Mizoram chief minister not to interfere in the internal matter of another state," Mr Singh said.

He criticised the European Parliament, which without knowing the ground reality adopted a resolution on July 13 asking the Indian authorities to take measures to protect religious minorities, when the crisis in Manipur is not linked to religion.

Mr Singh said the state government is committed to driving out illegal migrants and rejected the demand by Kukis of a separate administration.

The Meiteis have alleged the violence that began on May 3 over the Meiteis' demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status was only an excuse for the Kukis to start a major conflict so that they can reach their end goal i.e. separate administration.

Congress Whip To Rajya Sabha MPs As Cabinet Clears Delhi Services Bill

With the government planning to bring a Bill in Parliament to replace the Delhi services ordinance, the Congress on Wednesday issued a whip, asking all its Rajya Sabha MPs to be present in the House on Thursday as "very important issues will be taken up for discussion".

On Tuesday, the Union cabinet reportedly gave its nod to the Bill that will replace the ordinance promulgated for the creation of an authority for transfers and postings of Group-A officers in Delhi.

The Congress's chief whip in Rajya Sabha issued a three-line whip, saying "very important issues will be taken up for discussion in Rajya Sabha tomorrow i.e. Thursday, July 27, 2023".

"All members of the Congress Party in the Rajya Sabha are requested to kindly remain present in the House from 11 am onwards till the adjournment of the House on Thursday, July 27, 2023, without fail and support the party stand," the whip said.

This may be treated as "most important", it added.

The controversial Delhi ordinance was promulgated by the central government on May 19, a week after the Supreme Court handed over the control of services in Delhi excluding police, public order and land to the elected government headed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The ordinance facilitated the setting up of a National Capital Civil Service Authority for the transfer of and disciplinary proceedings against Group-A officers of the DANICS cadre.

Transfer and postings of all officers of the Delhi government were under the executive control of the lieutenant governor before the May 11 top court verdict.

Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party had reacted strongly against the ordinance saying the Centre had "deceived" the people of Delhi. The Congress and several other opposition parties have also come out against the ordinance.

After Opposition's No-Confidence Motion Plan, Coordinated Attack From BJP

The United Opposition's plan to move a no-confidence motion against the government drew a synchronised attack from the BJP's leaders and Union ministers this evening. All of it was directed at "INDIA" -- an acronym for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance.

It was a follow-up to the barrage of derisive tags from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. At the weekly meet of the BJP parliamentary Party earlier today, PM Modi had called the opposition "directionless".

"Indian National Congress. East India company. Indian Mujahideen. Popular Front of India - these are also INDIA. Just using the name INDIA does not mean anything," senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad quoted him as saying.

Shortly after, BJP JP Nadda cited the example of a "child who failed his exam".

"There was a child who failed in all his exams. He was hated by his classmates and neighbours. So the parents thought of changing his name to change his perception. Isn't the case similar to that of I.N.D.I.A?" Mr Nadda tweeted.

The big push came in the evening, when ministers and key leaders, including Amit Shah, S Jaishankar, Pralhad Joshi and Kiren Rijiju tweeted.

"In a bid to get rid of its hounding past, the opposition alliance has changed its nomenclature. But merely changing the name to I.N.D.I.A. will not erase their past deeds from public memory. The people of our country are wise enough to see through this propaganda and will treat this old product with a new label with the same disapproval," read the tweet from Amit Shah.

Mr Shah's tweet drew a retort from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

"It seems that the arrow has hit the mark… It is hurting a lot…," read his tweet in Hindi.

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, whose party, along with the Congress is spearheading the no-confidence motion, declared their plans in the evening.

"The overall Parliamentary strategy is in place for the INDIA parties. Tactics to execute that strategy evolve every day.  Rule 198 of the Lok Sabha states the procedure of moving a no confidence motion. Picture abhi baki hai!" he told reporters.

The plan for a no-confidence motion came amid a massive logjam in parliament over the situation on Manipur, on which the opposition demands a discussion and a statement from the Prime Minister in both houses. The government is willing to allow only a discussion and a statement from the Union Home Minister.

The session -- starting a day after a video of two tribal women being marched naked went viral – has been mostly unproductive, in view of the government's long list of bills for this session.

In a tweet, Mr O'Brien also said PM Modi's "comparison of a political alliance to a terrorist group is a desperate move to divert public mind from the Manipur crisis".

"Instead of talking outside the Parliament, we challenge him to discuss the Manipur issue in the house. Prioritize people over politics!" he had added.

Congress's Rahul Gandhi had reacted sharply too. "Call us whatever you want, Mr. Modi. We are INDIA. We will help heal Manipur and wipe the tears of every woman and child. We will bring back love and peace for all her people. We will rebuild the idea of India in Manipur," his tweet read.

Opposition MPs Sit On Night Protest Outside Parliament Amid Manipur Tangle

A group of opposition MPs are sitting in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Parliament House in protest against disruption of the monsoon session for a third day. The newly formed opposition grouping 'INDIA' has been demanding Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give a comprehensive statement on the over two-month-long ethnic violence in Manipur.

Holding 'INDIA for Manipur' placards, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress MPs were seen holding a silent protest at 11 pm. They will spend the night there.

Earlier today, the Congress said parliament did not function for a third day because of the "continued refusal" of the government to accept INDIA's demand for a "comprehensive statement" by PM Modi in both the houses on the Manipur crisis.

Several opposition MPs had given notices for an adjournment motion to discuss the situation in Manipur.

The opposition wants a debate allowing all parties to speak without any time restrictions and has been holding protests on the issue since the monsoon session started on Thursday.

The government has accused the opposition of running away from a debate on the all-important issue and has questioned their seriousness towards it. The opposition has also accused the government of the same - i.e. running away from a debate.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge alleged the government is being insensitive. "Our demand is that the PM should come to the house and make a statement. We are ready to discuss that statement. You are speaking outside but not inside, this is an insult to parliament. It is a serious matter," he said.

BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi accused opposition leaders of running away from a debate and also questioned their "silence" on issues of violence against women in other states, days after a video was shared on social media showing two tribal women being paraded naked in Manipur.

Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said the opposition should not make excuses.

"The PM has already made a statement on Manipur with sensitivity and firmness ahead of the (monsoon) session. It is wrong that we didn't start the discussion (on the Manipur issue in parliament) at all by making an excuse in the name of the PM," Mr Singh said.

Suborbital Flights To Soon Take You Anywhere Within 2 Hours: Study

Nearly 20 years after the final flight of Concorde- the world's first supersonic commercial airliner- the aviation industry is set to enter an era of ultrafast air travel. According to New York Post, NASA's experimental supersonic aircraft, the X-59 'Son of Concorde' is all set for its first test flight.

The X-59, which is smaller and slower than Concorde, has a top speed of around 1,500 kilometres per hour and promises to cut travel time from New York to London by approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Recent research published by Britain's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) suggested that by the year 2033, a flight from London to Sydney, which currently takes 22 hours, could be reduced to just two hours.

Notably, suborbital flights resemble the rockets employed by Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic jet program. These flights which operate at an astounding speed of 3500 miles, equivalent to 5632 kilometres per hour, offer incredible time-saving opportunities.

For instance, a person can go from New York to Shanghai in 39 minutes, instead of the current 15-hour drive. A trip from New York to London, for example, can be completed in less than an hour.

X-59 also features ‘Quiet Supersonic Technology' which is intended to turn the sonic boom caused by breaking the sound barrier into a 'sonic thump'.

"Then an aircraft travels faster than the speed of sound, shockwaves form and travel away from the aircraft. Normally, these shockwaves merge and generate disruptive sonic booms heard on the ground for miles on either side of the aircraft's flight path. The X-59 is shaped in a way that prevents the shockwaves from coming together, resulting in a gentle sonic thump instead of the loud sonic boom produced by other supersonic aircraft.," NASA said.

Once fully assembled and ready for flight, the single-seat X-59 will be just shy of 100 feet (30.5m) long, with a hard-swept wingspan of just 29.5 feet (9m) and a height of just 14 feet (4.25 meters). It will be able to cruise at 55,000 feet and, will have a cruising speed of Mach 1.4.

US Box Office Report: Barbie Trounces Oppenheimer In Weekend Business

Have movies, and movie theaters finally made their post-pandemic return?

With legions of pink-clad moviegoers swarming theaters, Warner Bros.' Barbie conquered North American box offices in its debut weekend, raking in $155 million, Sunday estimates showed -- nearly double the cash of its second-place competitor.

The other half of the much-anticipated "Barbenheimer" cinematic weekend -- which saw Universal's much darker biopic Oppenheimer released the same day and spurred hundreds of thousands to organize their own double features -- brought in its own whopping $80.5 million, according to figures from Exhibitor Relations.

The coincidental same-day release of the two starkly different but highly anticipated films -- following an iconic doll ready to paint the world pink and the other about the scientist who helped invent the atomic bomb -- created a bottom-up pop-culture phenomenon that transcended the individual marketing for either.

Together, they also helped cinemas bring in massive crowds, a shot in the arm for an industry hit hard by the pandemic as well as the rise of streaming services.

"The subtext of the joke of 'Barbenheimer' is that these couldn't be two more different movies," David A. Gross, of Franchise Entertainment Research, told AFP.

At the same time, he added, "The movie industry has a very healthy record of accommodating two big pictures. Moviegoers go when there are hot movies."

In a Sunday note, Gross wrote that the opening for "Barbie" was "record-shattering."

"No comedic film of any kind has opened higher than $85.9m over a 3-day weekend," he wrote.

"Barbie has become what we call a zeitgeist movie. It seems to be hitting a chord," he told AFP.

"Oppenheimer," for its part, saw a "superb opening," Gross wrote in his Sunday note.

 DIY double features

According to industry estimates, some 200,000 people were thought to have purchased tickets to both films on the same day.

Emma McNealy, 35, was one of them.

"I had heard online people were planning to do it and it sounded funny to me," the account manager told AFP. "At first I wasn't planning to because I didn't feel like anyone else would want to spend the whole day doing this for the bit, but luckily a friend was in."

While both films fueled interest in the other, it was Barbie that pulled her in to try the double feature.

"I am sure I would have watched (Oppenheimer) eventually, but not on opening weekend," she said. "I think a lot of women like that a Barbie is getting more layers in this telling, it's not just candy-coated fluff."

Millions more were likely to catch both films on separate days.

"This was a phenomenal experience for people who love movies on the big screen," president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners Michael O'Leary said in a statement Sunday.

"It was a truly historic weekend."

The "Barbenheimer" films together left a massive gulf between the weekend's top two box office spots and the number three slot, occupied by "Sound of Freedom."

The controversial action thriller from Santa Fe Films and Angel Studios, which critics say plays into QAnon conspiracy theories, brought in $20.14 million.

Fourth and fifth place saw the sort of franchise sequels that have come to dominate box office recently.

Paramount's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, the latest in the long-running series starring Tom Cruise, brought in $19.5 million.

"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," from Disney, brought in $6.7 million. This "Indy" episode, likely the last, again stars Harrison Ford as a whip-cracking archeologist.

Rounding out the top 10 were:

Insidious: The Red Door ($6.5 million)

Elemental ($5.8 million)

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($2.8 million)

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts ($1.12 million)

No Hard Feelings ($1.07 million)
