Watch: Dhoni Can't Help But Applaud CSK Star's Flying Catch Of Warner

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Matheesha Pathirana took a gravity-defying catch to dismiss Delhi Capitals (DC) batter David Warner in their IPL 2024 match on Sunday. Warner for the reverse scoop after Mustafizur Rahman bowled a slower delivery. While Warner seemed to have time the ball pretty well, the lack of pace on that delivery allowed Pathirana to take a leap and grab the ball with one hand. Warner had a look of disbelief on his face while CSK icon MS Dhoni lauded Pathirana for his effort.

Dhoni was seen clapping to acknowledge Pathirana and his reaction has gone viral on social media.

Coming back to the match, DC had raced to 91/1 in just nine overs, with Warner completing his half-century in 32 balls.

However, he was dismissed in the next over, courtesy of Pathirana's brilliant catch.

This comes after DC skipper Rishabh Pant skipper won the toss and opted to bat against CSK.

While CSK decided to go the same playing XI, DC made two changes, bringing in Ishant Sharma and Prithvi Shaw in place of Kuldeep Yadav and Ricky Bhui.

"Kuldeep has a niggle," Pant said during the toss.

Defending champions CSK won both their matches, while DC has suffered defeat in both their matches so far in this IPL.

Teams: Chennai Super Kings: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane, Daryl Mitchell, Ravindra Jadeja, Sameer Rizvi, MS Dhoni, Deepak Chahar, Tushar Deshpande, Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman.

Delhi Capitals: Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, Tristan Stubbs, Axar Patel, Sumit Kumar, Anrich Nortje, Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed.

"Faf At No. 3, Drop...": IND Great Suggests Huge Changes In RCB Playing XI

Former Indian cricket team batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth suggested massive changes to the Royal Challengers Bangalore playing XI in the IPL 2024 after their loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. During a discussion on Star Sports, Srikkanth said that Will Jacks should be given a chance as an opener with Virat Kohli while Faf du Plessis should come out to play at No. 3. He also suggested that RCB should drop Alzarri Joseph as well as Rajat Patidar and include an Indian fast bowler like Akash Deep.

"Will Jacks is a brilliant off-spinner, I think we can push him for 2 overs. The line-up according to me should be, if I was the captain. Will Jacks, Virat Kohli opening. Faf du Plessis at No. 3, Cameron Green at 4, Glenn Maxwell, and then you drop Alzarri Joseph, drop Patidar and play an Indian fast bowler - Akash Deep," Srikkanth said on Star Sports.

"Then what happens is that you have good balance with both bat and ball. Otherwise, you will be struggling while bowling. Yesterday I was surprised that RCB did not bowl a single bouncer to the throat. Come on, you let Sunil Narine score a fifty (47 off 22 balls)," Srikkanth added.

Three matches might be too small a sample size to form an opinion but going by the lack of variety that has been on show in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's bowling attack, they might just be staring at a long, tiring IPL season this year.

The match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday offered the latest and the largest footprint of this particular weakness as the RCB bowlers failed to check a set of free-hitting batters while defending 183.

The immediate defence will be to project the presence of dew and an improved M Chinnaswamy pitch during the second innings. But a deep dive will give a different picture.

Defending a total, even a competitive one like 183, demands a tight beginning, however, the RCB bowlers were profligate.

Mohammed Siraj's length ball was walloped over mid-wicket for a six by Phil Salt, and the Englishman was served with two more juicy offerings on the fifth stump which were carted for a six and four each. The first over produced 18 runs.

Alzarri Joseph was introduced in the third over. But the pacer gave Sunil Narine a length ball on leg-stump which was dispatched for a six over long-on and two balls later a short-pitched delivery was sent in the same direction for a maximum.

These are the balls that will be punished at this level -- dew or no dew, whether it is easy pitch or tough pitch.

There was an exception in Vysakh Vijayakumar who used knuckle balls and pace-off deliveries to good effect to return with excellent figures of 1/23, but the more experienced names were reluctant to bring in those variations – at least consistently.

"The second innings was slightly better to bat because the ball came on to the bat a bit quicker because of the dew. I was trying to use hard-length balls and short balls banged into the pitch to contain batters," Vijaykumar said in the post-match press conference.

"But it was still gripping from both the ends. We did try to mix it up but they (KKR batters) got away with it." There's some truth in his words. The stats show that KKR bowlers used 22 balls under 120 kmph and conceded just 20 runs off them to pick up three wickets.

Meanwhile, the RCB bowlers bowled 19 balls under 120 kmph, but gave away 40 runs and could bag only a wicket.

"Need India To Restore Just And Lasting Peace In Ukraine": Foreign Minister

As the war with Russia rages on, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, has said India has an important global voice and can not only use it to influence the way Moscow behaves but also help other nations join an initiative for peace.

In an expansive interview with NDTV on Thursday during his first visit to the country, the Ukrainian leader also spoke about the need for India to get a seat on the United Nations Security Council, the evolving India-Russia and India-Ukraine relationship, a planned peace summit in Switzerland, and Holi being celebrated on the streets of Kharkiv.

Mr Kuleba, who is in India on a two-day visit at the invitation of Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, said it didn't take him any time to agree to come. "This is because India is a very important player in the world and we need India to restore just and lasting peace in Ukraine," he said.

On Mr Jaishankar's statements that India and Russia take special care of each other's interests, but also that the country has given frank messages to Moscow, the Ukrainian foreign minister said the India-Russia is based on the Soviet legacy, which is "extinct and has no future".

Mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement - which he called "famous words" - that 'this is not an era of war', Mr Kuleba said Russia has triggered the largest conflict in Europe since the Second World War.

"We understand there are some economic, technological ties between India and Russia and India is a sovereign nation, it has the right to develop relations with any country it deems appropriate. But if India and Russia are so close, it means that India can influence the way Russia behaves and this is one of the reasons why the voice of India is so important but, second, I don't think this relationship has a future for the reason that I mentioned. I think the Ukrainian-Indian relationship has more (of a) future in that sense," the minister said.

India's Key Role

To a question on what his country would like India to do in the current situation, the minister said New Delhi can use its relations with Russia to stop the war, which has gone on for over two years now.

"India can play a very important role in bringing together more nations from the Global South... if India sits at the table of the peace formula, the initiative put forward by Ukraine to find a diplomatic solution to the war, then many other nations will feel much safer and comfortable sitting next to India and they will come and join this effort," he said.

Mr Kuleba said this will not only enhance "excellent" India-Ukraine ties, but also respect for international law. "That you cannot change borders by force, that you cannot invade your neighbours, that you cannot commit atrocities. This is the world that India will benefit from and this is the world that Russia tries to destroy," he said.

The minister also Indicated a softening of Ukraine's stance on India purchasing Russian oil and said since the transaction is done in rupees, it does not end up benefiting the Russian "war machine".

Russian Attack

On last week's attack on a Moscow concert hall, in which at least 140 people were killed, and Russian President Vladimir Putin's claims that the attackers were heading towards South Ukraine, Mr Kuleba said the attempt at blaming his country was no surprise.

"You don't have to be a rocket scientist. If there is anything that can be used to discredit Ukraine in the eyes of international community, if there is anything that can be used to mobilise more Russians against Ukrainians, it will be done. This is the attitude and the approach that the Russian leadership has take.. They kept lying to the whole world that they were not going to invade Ukraine, and they did. They lie all the time. So why do you think they are telling the truth this time?

India On Security Council

The Ukrainian minister said that despite the Israel-Gaza war and the Russia-Ukraine war going on simultaneously, his country has got help from Europe and the US.

"F-16s will arrive in Ukraine soon... Yes, there is a debate in the United States, we all follow it with popcorn in our hands. It's pretty dramatic, I agree, but both Democrats and Republicans agree that support to Ukraine must continue... Even if anyone wants the US to completely isolate itself and focus entirely on domestic issues, this is simply impossible. This is not how the world works. So the United States will continue to be involved in fixing the world," he said.

To a question on whether the United Nations is losing its relevance given the continuation of the two wars, he said criticising the UN would be an easy thing. "I will not resort to this easy exercise because the war taught us that only difficult exercises are worth spending your energy on," he said.

The minister added, however, that the UN is struggling because the balance of power inside the organisation is "broken" and things need to change.

"Every new death as a result of a war in the world is another nail in the coffin of the United Nations. The UN is trying its best, but it just can't because it gets paralysed if there is no agreement among key stakeholders... It needs to change. I firmly believe that Russia must be out of the UN Security Council. India must be in. Other countries should become permanent members," he said.

Can Medical Students Return?

Asked when Indian medical students will be able to go back to Ukraine, Mr Kulabe used the example of being treated by an Indian doctor a month ago as an example of the importance of India-Ukraine ties.

"It was an Indian, a young lady, who studied in Ukraine, who stayed in Ukraine, also during the war. And you have to understand that while many Indian students come back to India after studying in Ukraine to help their communities, others stay and become part of our community, of our society. Kharkiv, a beautiful city in eastern Ukraine, was the capital of the Holi festival in Ukraine," he said.

"Every year, Indian students together with Ukrainian students turned the streets and the squares of Kharkiv into an Indian city by celebrating Holi. Today, the city is being systematically destroyed by Russia on a daily basis... We want Holi to be celebrated on the streets of Kharkiv again. We don't want to see Russian bombs there, not to mention Russian soldiers," the minister said.

"And we took measures to allow foreign students to study in other parts of Ukraine. It's because we consider them part of our society and we greatly value this part of our bilateral cooperation," he emphasised.

Attempts At Peace

On the threat of a World War, which has been flagged several times by Mr Putin, the Ukrainian foreign minister said it could be rhetoric.

"I think President Putin loves his lavish life too much to put it at the risk of extinction by resorting to a third world war. But, of course, in order to persuade countries not to help Ukraine, he will continue to heat up his rhetoric. This is just rhetoric," he claimed.

A peace summit is being planned in Switzerland at Ukraine's request and Mr Kuleba said India's presence there will be critical. "(It will be) crucial and this is one of the reasons I am here. India has been a part of preparatory coordination meetings and President Voldymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister Modi discussed the summit in their phone conversation."

Stating that the summit is based on a UN General Assembly resolution of October 2022 on the main principles of restoring peace in Ukraine, Mr Kuleba pointed out that 143 nations had voted in its favour.

"It doesn't say anything more than what is already said in this resolution. So those countries who voted for this resolution should face no problem in supporting what is written in the peace formula. And 143 is a big number," he said.

Stressing that some of the main points of the formula are food security, energy security, exchange of prisoners, return of deported children and accountability for the crimes committed, the minister said the main aim is the end of the war.

"So basically the peace formula is a menu that addresses all major problems caused by the large-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine. And we designed this menu, I deliberately use the word 'menu', in a way that any country can pick up the issue that it wants to work on. For example, you want to work on the exchange of prisoners, but you do not want to work on bringing Russian leadership to account for war crimes committed in Ukraine. And that's fine... It allows us to have more countries on board," he said.

Lessons From The Mahatma

Asked about a video he had posted with a statue of Mahatma Gandhi behind him - in which he spoke of the freedom fighter's legacy- and what he expects to achieve in the conversations with Mr Jaishankar and others in the government, the minister said he expects a candid exchange.

Mr Kulabe said, "We will have a very candid conversation, about all the good things, and the things that we dislike in our policies - I mean in Ukrainian policy, but also in Indian policy. But, since I will be seeing Dr Jaishankar tomorrow, I can give him a heads up to our conversation thanks to your question. My point is very simple. Very few believed that Mahatma Gandhi would succeed, and India would become an independent nation through a peaceful resistance. And today, many say that Ukraine will not be able to restore its territorial integrity, but the Mahatma succeeded, and Ukraine will succeed as well."

"Because the truth was on his side, and is on our side today. And I'm sure that India will be on the side of truth again because supporting Ukraine today is supporting the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi - freedom, independence, and belief that if you fight for the right cause, you will eventually succeed, irrespective of how strong your enemy is," he added.

SRH's 277/3 vs MI Is Now The Highest In IPL! A Look At Top 5 Totals

Mumbai Indians on Wednesday got associated with a forgettable record in IPL history. The five-time champions got thrashed for 277/3 runs in 20 overs by SunRisers Hyderabad  - the highest ever total in the history of the IPL since 2008. Before this, Royal Challengers Bengaluru had scored 263/5 against Pune Warriors in 2013. On Wednesday, the SRH batters' onslaught ensured that the 11-year old record was broken.

SunRisers Hyderabad batters went hammer and tongs right from the word go as Mumbai Indians were just clueless. Abhishek Sharma hit a 16-ball fifty while Travis Head hit half-century in 18 balls. Courtesy their onslaught SRH scored 148 in 10 overs - the highest in IPL history.

Highest team totals in the IPL
277/3 - SRH vs MI, Hyderabad, 2024
263/5 - RCB vs PWI, Bengaluru, 2013
257/5 - LSG vs PBKS, Mohali, 2023
248/3 - RCB vs GL, Bengaluru, 2016
246/5 - CSK vs RR, Chennai, 2010

Talking about the game, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a mammoth 277 for three, the highest total in IPL history, against Mumbai Indians on Wednesday. Sent in to bat, Travis Head, playing his first IPL game this season, blasted a 24-ball 62, while Abhishek Sharma slammed 63 off 23 to lay the foundation.

Heinrich Klassen (80) and Aiden Markram (42) provided the late charge to take the hosts past the 250-mark.

The previous highest total was 263 for five, achieved by RCB back in 2013.

It was a nightmare for the MI bowlers as all of them, barring Jasprit Bumrah (0/36), ended up leaking more than 10 runs per over.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad: 277 for 3 in 20 overs (Heinrich Klassen 80 , Travis Head 62, Abhishek Sharma 63; Piyush Chawla 1/34).

Rs 33,000 Not Enough, 3 In Noida Fined Another Rs 47,500 For Viral Holi Act

The Noida Traffic Police slapped another penalty of Rs 47,500 against three people, including two women, whose video of scooter-riding surfaced on social media this week, officials said on Wednesday.

The local police have lodged an FIR in this regard.

The traffic police had earlier imposed a fine of Rs 33,000 on the scooter-owner after their first video, which was called out for vulgarity in public places by internet users, surfaced on social media on March 25.

The traffic police then took cognizance of another video, in which one girl and a boy were seen riding the scooter on a city street without helmets, and booked the scooter-owner on seven counts of negligence related to road safety including provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, according to the e-challan.

"The total penalty imposed on the scooter owner over the two episodes in the two days has reached Rs 80,500," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumar Yadav told PTI.

Yadav also appealed to the public to obey traffic rules and follow road safety guidelines like wearing helmets and seat belts while riding two-wheelers or four wheelers, respectively.

Meanwhile, an FIR was also lodged on Tuesday at Noida's Sector 113 police station against the three "unidentified" persons on the basis of a complaint lodged by a local sub-inspector.

"The boy was negligently riding the scooter while the girls engaged in obscene acts to make its video, which was later circulated on social media and due to which anger is being expressed by the general public," the allegation against the trio in the FIR stated.

The FIR has been lodged under IPC sections 279 (rash/negligent driving endangering human life), 290 (public nuisance), 294 (obscenity in public place), 336 and 337 (both related to act endangering life of others or causing hurt by it).

Police said further legal proceedings in the case are underway.

Normalcy In Ties With China Will Only Be Achieved If...: S Jaishankar

Normalcy in bilateral ties with China will only be achieved based on the traditional deployment of troops and will be the prerequisite for the relationship with Beijing in the future, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said.

"My first duty to Indians is to secure the border. I can never compromise on that," S Jaishankar said responding to a question on the current state of India's relations with China in his interaction with the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur.

He said every country wants "good relations with its neighbours". "Who doesn't? But every relationship has to be founded on some basis. We're still negotiating with the Chinese. I talk to my counterpart. We meet from time to time. Our military commanders negotiate with each other. But we are very clear that we had an agreement. There is a Line of Actual Control. We have a tradition of not bringing troops to that line. Both of us have bases some distance away, which is our traditional deployment place. And we want that normalcy," he said.

"So that normalcy that returns to where we are in terms of the troop deployment will be the basis for the relationship going forward. And we've been very, very honest with the Chinese about it," he said.

He said that in the case of China, the relationship has been difficult for a variety of reasons, including the fact that the two sides have a boundary dispute.

"But despite the boundary dispute over the many years, we built up a substantial relationship because we agreed that while we will negotiate the boundary dispute, both of us will agree that we will not bring soldiers in large numbers to the boundary. And we will never have a situation where there'll be violence and bloodshed on the contrary," he said.

So this understanding which started in the late 1980s, actually was reflected in several agreements. And those agreements gave the relationship stability based on which in other areas, the relationship went forward, he said.

"Now, unfortunately, for reasons still not clear to us, these agreements were broken in 2020. And we had violence and bloodshed on the border," Jaishankar said.

Ties between India and China nose-dived significantly following the deadly clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in more than four decades.

"You Keep Our Courts Strong": Bar Association In Letter To Chief Justice

The All Manipur Bar Association has written to the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud highlighting the need to speak out against "underhanded attacks" on the judiciary.

The bar association in the letter said it is extremely concerned about recent trends where vested interest groups are trying to defame the courts with "frivolous logic" and "stale political agendas".

"This heated interest group operates in various ways. They create false narratives of a supposed 'better past' and 'golden period' of the courts, contrasting it with the happenings in the present," the bar association said in the letter to Chief Justice Chandrachud.

"These are nothing but intentional statements made to embarrass the courts for certain gains... Their pressure tactics are most obvious in political cases, particularly those involving political figures accused of corruption. These tactics are damaging to our courts and threaten our democratic fabric," the bar association said in the letter dated March 26.

The bar association requested the Chief Justice of India to take strong steps to protect the courts from such "attacks".

"... They have also stooped to the level of comparing our courts to those countries where there is no rule of law and accusing our judicial institutions with unfair practices. These aren't just criticisms; they are direct attacks meant to damage the public's trust in our judiciary and threaten the fair application of our laws," the bar association said.

"As people who work to uphold the law, we think it is time to stand up for our courts. We need to speak out against these underhanded attacks, making sure our courts stay strong as pillars of our democracy, untouched by these calculated attacks," the bar association said in the letter signed by All Manipur Bar Association president Puyam Tomcha Meetei.

Chief Justice Chandrachud in an interview to NDTV on March 20 had said the Supreme Court is always there for citizens of India, "irrespective of wealth, social status, caste, religion, or gender or who is in power", and "no case is too small for the highest court of the land".

"Sometimes I get emails in the middle of the night. Once there was a woman who needed medical termination of a pregnancy... my staff contacted me and we constituted a Bench the next day," the Chief Justice had said, giving an example.

IndiGo Passenger Shares Pic Of Damaged Luggage, Airline Responds

From missing seat cushions to finding a screw in a sandwich, in recent months, several unusual incidents have occurred on IndiGo flights. Now, a woman recently took to social media to express her disappointment with IndiGo Airlines. Shrankhla Srivastava, an X (formerly Twitter) user, shared a picture on Saturday of her damaged luggage after her Indigo flight. "Dear @IndiGo6E, Thank you for taking care of my luggage," the user wrote in a sarcastic post and tagged the airlines.

Ms Srivastava's post soon went viral on social media, prompting reactions from internet users. Her post also caught the attention of IndiGo Airlines, which issued an apology and expressed regret. "Hi, we sincerely regret the inconvenience caused. We request you please allow us some time to check. We'll connect with you," the airline tweeted.

Take a look below:

In the comments section, some users also shared similar incidents, while others criticised the airline over poor luggage management.

"Mine was also handled this well in December. Broken handle and cracked shell. I think hard shell bags are not made for airlines," wrote one user. "Faced a similar issue with them. Ground staff offered peanuts. Not even covering the cost of the bag. Then escalated it to the highest level and got compensation," commented another.

"Even my suitcase zips were torn apart during indigo luggage handling last Diwali. It was a soft luggage suitcase that's why too big breakage didn't occur. I would be traveling soon again, so now I have to replace the zippers of my suitcase within next few days," said a third user.

"Shifted to a soft bag because I travel every week. I have a question/ if you come across any recommendation of a hard case bag that doesn't break with rough handling, pls help me (for good karma)," expressed another.

"One of the worst air line I have ever seen.. very arrogant staff who thinks that they are the top of the world .. even the behaviour of the cabin crew is pathetic," wrote a user.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, a woman took to social media to share her harrowing experience with the airlines. Yavanika Raj Shah, an X (formerly Twitter) user, shared a picture of a missing seat cushion on an IndiGo flight. She was flying from Bengaluru to Bhopal on flight 6E 6465.

The airlines took note of the same and expressed regret. IndiGo said that the cushions were replaced for cleaning and the cabin crew had informed the customers. "Ma'am, thank you for speaking with us. The seat cushions were replaced prior to the flight for cleaning purposes. Our cabin crew promptly informed the customers who were allotted these seats. This is a standard practice for cleaning during transit as and when required," they wrote.

Big Security Breach As Virat Kohli Is Stunned By Fan Who Hoodwinked All

Virat Kohli brought out his classy form at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Punjab Kings on Monday. The former RCB and Indian cricket team skipper struck a 31-ball half century to boost RCB's chase against Punjab Kings in the teams' second match of the IPL 2024. However, he was also stunned by a massive security breach as a fan tricked all to enter the ground. The person also managed to touch Kohli's feet before he was nabbed.

Earlier, the pragmatism of captain Shikhar Dhawan was the bedrock on which Punjab Kings built their 176 for six as Royal Challengers Bangalore bowlers found their bearings on a Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch that offered them springboard bounce on Monday.

Dhawan (45, 37b), Jitesh Sharma (27, 20b) and Prabhsimran Singh (25, 17b) were the main contributors for the Kings after Royal Challengers opted to bowl first on a track that had a smattering of green.

For RCB, Mohammed Siraj and Glenn Maxwell took wickets apiece.

The Kings made a shaky beginning as Jonny Bairstow got out early as his outings on these shores, which is stretched back to last year's World Cup, has now become more barren than the Indian summer.

In the latest instance, the Englishman's poorly-executed close-to-the-body pull of pacer Siraj was taken by Virat Kohli inside the covers.

But from 17 for one, the visitors found some runs through Dhawan and Prabhsimran who tackled the pitch and the RCB bowlers with aplomb, milking 55 runs off 38 balls.

Dhawan was not precisely smooth during his stay but showed enough pluck to cash in on the loose deliveries, such as a length ball on the off-stump from left-arm spinner Mayank Dagar which he lofted over long-on for a six.

In fact, the RCB bowlers, especially impressive left-arm seamer Yash Dayal (1/23), did well to tie him down with deliveries that darted in to him from just short of good length.

Prabhsimran also occasionally vented his aggressive instincts, and the most telling piece was his flicked six off Cameron Green that sailed 90 meters over mid-wicket for a maximum.

But just as the alliance was blossoming, Prabhsimran tried to pull Maxwell but a feeble top edge was easily grabbed by stumper Anuj Rawat.

Rawat soon doubled the number of his catches when he latched on to a wild heave outside the off-stump by Liam Livingstone off Alzarri Joseph in the last ball of the 12th over.

But the Punjab side suffered a heavier blow as Dhawan got in the very next ball.

The left-hander's attempt to hoist Maxwell out of the ground ended in the hands of Kohli at long-on as the Kings slipped to 98 for four in 12.1 overs.

It wasn't an ideal situation for Kings as they needed a few more runs on the board to give a meaningful challenge to the home side.

They found those from Jitesh, who hammered Dagar for two sixes in a row, and Sam Curran, who added 52 runs for the fifth wicket off 34 balls to push the PBKS past the 150-run mark, that was swelled by a couple of beefy hits by Shashank Singh, who carted Joseph for 20 runs in the final over.

But they would have liked a heavier looking scoreboard in pursuance of their second successive victory.

In Bengal, Former Judge, Erstwhile Royal, Fashion Designer In BJP Line-Up

The BJP, determined to meet party chief JP Nadda's target of 35 of Bengal's 42 Lok Sabha seats, has come up with a  mixed bag from Bengal, which contains a High Court judge, an erstwhile royal, and a woman from Sandeshkhali. Added to this is the usual celebrity component that adds to the sheen of the elections in eastern state known for its intelligentsia and a thriving film industry.

Leading the BJP charge is Rekha Patra. The candidate from Basirhat is one of the women from Sandeshkhali who has been at the forefront of the fight against local Trinamool strongman Sheikh Shahjahan.

In Krishnanagar, the BJP has fielded erstwhile royal Amrita Ray to take on Trinamool's Mahua Moitra, who is back in the electoral fray after being disqualified from the Lok Sabha in connection with the alleged cash-for-questions scam.

Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay, who joined the BJP recently after taking voluntary retirement, will contest from Bengal's Tamluk. He is the first retired judge to join electoral politics,  moving away from the way the judiciary has so far distanced itself.

Also in the line-up is Tapas Roy, who quit Trinamool after it became clear that he was going to be denied ticket following a raid of the Enforcement Directorate at his house. Now in the BJP, he takes on senior parliamentarian Sudip Bandopadhyay in Kolkata North.

Asansol MLA and former fashion designer Agnimitra Paul, who has been vociferously defending the BJP in Bengal, has replaced Dilip Ghosh in Medinipur. She will face actor and Trinamool MLA June Maliah.

Mr Ghosh, who is credited with delivering 18 seats to the BJP in 2019, has been moved to Bardhhaman-Durgapur, where he faces Trinamool's Kirti Azad.

Video: Elephant Attacks Another Elephant At Temple Event, Many Injured

A video of an elephant going berserk and attacking another elephant at the Tharakkal temple festival in Kerala has emerged on social media. The incident happened around 10.30 pm on Friday when the elephant, Guruvayur Ravikrishnan, carrying the 'Ammathiruvady' deity, lost control and attacked the other elephant, Puthupally Arjunan.

The video shows the elephant charging at another elephant, Puthupally Arjunan, carrying the 'Arattupuzha' deity, and chasing it for almost one kilometre. The elephant's mahout Sreekumar narrowly escaped after the elephant made three attempts to attack him.

The incident caused panic among the devotees and many people attending the festival suffered injuries. People carried by the elephants sustained injuries too and those seated atop the elephants tried to escape but fell and got hurt.

Both the elephants could be seen charging and chasing each other in the viral video. Both the elephants were later brought under control by the elephant squad, reported local news outlet Mathrubhumi.

The incident comes at a time when the issue of human-animal conflicts continues to haunt Kerala. Nine people have been reported killed in Kerala due to attacks by wild animals.

Recently, a 62-year-old woman was attacked and killed by a wild elephant in a forest area near Athirappally. In February, a 42-year-old man died after being attacked by a wild elephant that strayed into a human settlement near Mananthavad.

Arvind Kejriwal Seeks Cop's Removal, Court Wants CCTV Footage Preserved

A local court has directed to preserve CCTV camera footage on a plea filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, seeking the removal of a Delhi Police officer deployed for security in the court for alleged misconduct.

"Application has been filed on behalf of the accused (Kejriwal) stating that the security staff/in-charge responsible for bringing him for production before the court, namely ACP (Assistant Commissioner of Police) AK Singh, is unnecessarily harsh and mishandled the people around the courtroom," Special Judge Kaveri Baweja noted.

The application was filed by Kejriwal on Friday, along with his submissions opposing the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea for his custody.

The court, however, remanded him in ED custody till March 28 in the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

It further noted that, according to the plea, while producing co-accused Manish Sisodia in the case, a written complaint was filed against the officer.

Kejriwal sought the court's directions to remove or replace the officer, the order noted.

"Having considered the submissions made, I deem it appropriate to direct that firstly a request letter be sent to the Principal District & Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge (CBI) to get preserved the above CCTV footage and to get produced a copy thereof before this court on the next date for the purpose of disposal of the above application," the judge said.

According to sources, on Friday, when Kejriwal was produced before the court, which was jam-packed with lawyers, litigants and security personnel, the ACP allegedly misbehaved with several people while trying to prevent them from entering the court.

Wearing 'Sindoor' Religious Duty Of Woman As It Shows She Is Married: Court

A family court in Indore in Madhya Pradesh has asked a woman to return to her husband's home with immediate effect while observing that wearing the ritualistic 'sindoor' (vermillion) was the duty of a (Hindu) woman as it demonstrates that she is married.

Indore family court Principal Judge NP Singh's direction came while hearing a petition of a man seeking restoration of his rights under Hindu Marriage Act after his wife walked out of the marriage five years ago.

In his order of March 1, the judge said, "When the statement of the woman was recorded in the court, she admitted she was not wearing 'sindoor'. 'Sindoor' is a religious duty of a wife and it shows that the woman is married."

After perusal of the entire submission of the woman, it was clear she had not been abandoned by her husband and that she had left him and wanted a divorce, the order further said.

"She has forsaken her husband. She is not wearing the 'sindoor'," the court said.

In her defence, the woman accused her husband of physical and mental harassment for dowry.

After hearing both sides and going through the material on record, the court said the woman had not submitted any police complaints or reports regarding her allegations.

The petitioner's lawyer Shubham Sharma said his client got married in 2017 and the couple has a 5-year-old son.

"Shouldn't Have To Pay Higher Prices...": US vs Apple Over iPhone Monopoly

The US Department of Justice sued Apple on Thursday for illegally maintaining a monopoly for its iPhone by stifling competition and imposing exorbitant costs on consumers.

The lawsuit, also brought by multiple US states, attacked the iPhone for raking in hundreds of billions of dollars by making it difficult for consumers to switch away to cheaper smartphones and devices.

The long anticipated case against Apple sees the company founded by Steve Jobs in 1976 clash with Washington after largely escaping US government scrutiny for nearly a half century.

It joins Amazon, Google and Facebook-owner Meta which are also facing antitrust lawsuits in the United States.

News of the lawsuit sent shares in Apple down by as much as 3.75 percent on Wall Street on Thursday.

At the heart of the case is Apple's alleged exclusionary practices that set strict and at times opaque conditions on firms and developers seeking to reach the iPhone's 136 million US users.

According to the lawsuit, these rules and decisions have been designed to force Apple users into staying in the Apple ecosystem and buying the company's more expensive hardware, the iPhone.

"Consumers should not have to pay higher prices because companies violate the antitrust laws," said Attorney General Merrick Garland.

"If left unchallenged, Apple will only continue to strengthen its smartphone monopoly," he added.

Apple fights back

The far-reaching case singled out practices that it said was making Apple richer to the detriment of advancing innovation and technology for consumers.

In a statement, Apple denied the merit of the lawsuit, saying it was "wrong on the facts and the law, and we will vigorously defend against it."

If successful, the suit would "set a dangerous precedent, empowering government to take a heavy hand in designing people's technology," the company added.

The lawsuit for example accused Apple of squashing the creation of Super Apps, one-stop web portals that could exist on an iPhone and give consumers other ways to get services, such as music, photo or movies.

Other big tech giants such as Meta have long dreamed of opening such super-apps on the iPhone, which accounts for roughly half of the smartphone market in the United States.

The accusations also target Apple's wallet, which is the only application allowed on the iPhone to access the technology to make tap payments in stores, forcing others to pay a fee.

Messaging apps are under the microscope too, with prosecutors accusing Apple of making it hard for Apple users to interact easily with Android phone users, coercing them to buying the more expensive iPhone.

The broad case also mentions smartwatches, with the Apple Watch only being available through the iPhone, and competing smartwatches having very limited functionality on the iPhone.

The complaint alleges that these nefarious practices go into other services such as web browsers, entertainment and even automotive services.

In recent years Apple has invested heavily in promoting services as well as hardware as it seeks ways to make money beyond the iPhone, which was introduced in 2007 and changed the world of consumer technology.

But iPhone sales growth has been slowing in recent years, raising pressure on the company to find other sources of revenue.

The DOJ pointed out that Apple's profits exceed any other company in the Fortune 500 and that it exceeds the gross domestic product of more than 100 countries.

In 2023, Apple saw global sales of $383 billion and net profit of $97 billion.

The DOJ's investigation of Apple began in 2019 under the Trump administration.

Apple largely won a US lawsuit from Fortnite-maker Epic Games that has been pursuing Apple in jurisdictions worldwide over the rules and fees it imposes on the iPhone.

In a case brought by Spotify, the EU this month hit Apple with a 1.8-billion-euro ($1.9 billion) fine for preventing European users from accessing information about alternative, cheaper music streaming services.

Arvind Kejriwal Arrested: Decade Long BJP-AAP Tussle Reaches Its Crescendo

The decade-long rivalry between the AAP led by Arvind Kejriwal and the BJP ruling at the Centre reached a crescendo on Thursday with the arrest of the Delhi chief minister by the ED in an excise policy-linked money laundering case.

The tussle between the two sides began with their almost simultaneous rise to power with the BJP led by Narendra Modi receiving a massive mandate in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and the AAP forming the government in Delhi with a historic victory a year later by winning 67 assembly seats out of 70.

Even before this, Mr Kejriwal, after a brief stint as chief minister of Delhi in 2013, challenged Prime Minister Modi in a much-publicised contest from Varanasi in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, setting the stage for a rivalry that has continued over the years.

Speaking in the Delhi Assembly in February this year, Mr Kejriwal, who is also the AAP national convener, asserted that the AAP is "the biggest threat" to the BJP and vowed to liberate the country from it in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls.

The confrontations between the Kejriwal government and the Centre over governance-related matters assumed political overtones and blame-game with both the AAP and the BJP joining their respective sides.

The Aam Aadmi Party dispensation since coming to power in Delhi in 2015 has been involved in frequent run-ins with the office of lieutenant governor.

It began with the Kejriwal government confronting the then Lt Governor Najeeb Jung over the issues of control over the Anti Corruption Branch, transfer and posting of senior officers, and movement of official files, just after coming to power.

The AAP vociferously attacked Mr Jung, who formed a three-member committee headed by former Comptroller and Auditor General of India V K Shunglu to look into 400 files of the Delhi government.

Another controversy erupted when Mr Jung appointed an IAS officer chief secretary who was asked by Mr Kejriwal not to take charge and even locked his office over the matter.

The tussle between the AAP dispensation and the LG office continued even after Mr Jung resigned in December 2016 and former Union home secretary Anil Baijal replaced him.

Mr Baijal's more than five-year tenure as Delhi LG witnessed numerous face-offs, the most remarkable being Chief Minister Kejriwal accompanied by his cabinet colleagues staging a dharna inside Raj Niwas in 2018, alleging that city bureaucrats were not listening to the ministers.

The AAP dispensation also clashed with Mr Baijal over the appointment of special public prosecutors for a trial of cases related to the Delhi riots in 2020 and anti-CAA protests.

In July 2021, the then deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia objected to Mr Baijal holding meetings with officers and instructing them on works that directly came under the purview of the elected government.

A more bitter face-off ensued after incumbent Lt Governor V K Saxena took charge in May 2022.

Within two months, Saxena recommended a CBI probe into alleged irregularities and procedural lapses in the formulation and execution of the Kejriwal government's excise policy 2021-22.

This opened up an altogether new chapter of fraught relations between the AAP dispensation and the other side, with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arresting Sisodia and party MP Sanjay Singh in connection with the alleged liquor scam.

After the ED's summonses to Mr Kejriwal in connection with the excise policy-linked money laundering case and also in a separate case related to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the AAP has sharpened its attack on the BJP and its government at the Centre.

The AAP leadership has accused the BJP of trying to break the party by sending the Delhi chief minister behind bars and toppling his government in Delhi.

The BJP, on the other hand, is having a field day slamming AAP and Kejriwal over alleged corruption in the Delhi government.

The Delhi LG empowered by the implementation of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Act in August 2023, has assumed a more proactive role in governance-related matters evoking strong protests by the Kejriwal government and AAP.

The power tussle between the Kejriwal government and the Centre has its genesis in a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in May 2015, stipulating Delhi LG will have jurisdiction in services, public order, police and land matters.

The notification paved the way for a long legal battle between the two sides in the Delhi High Court as well as the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court on May 11, 2023, ruled in favour of the Delhi government extending its executive powers over the services matters involving transfer and posting of senior officers.

Within days of the SC verdict, the BJP-led Centre brought an ordinance that was later on turned into an Act restoring the power balance in favour of its representative LG.

Finland Is World's Happiest Country For 7th Time, India Stands At...

India was ranked 126th out of 143 nations in a global happiness index released on Wednesday which noted that older age is associated with higher life satisfaction in the world's most populous country.

Finland emerged as the happiest country in the world, topping the World Happiness Report 2024, the seventh successive year that the country has occupied the top spot on the list.

The other of the top 10 countries are Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Australia.

India is ranked 126th on the list, behind countries such as Libya, Iraq, Palestine and Niger, according to the findings announced on Wednesday to mark the UN's International Day of Happiness.

The World Happiness Report is a partnership of Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the WHR's Editorial Board.

The young in India are the "happiest" while those in "lower middle" rung are the least happy.

The US (23rd) has fallen out of the top 20 for the first time since the World Happiness Report was first published in 2012, driven by a large drop in the well-being of Americans under 30.

Afghanistan remains bottom of the overall rankings as the world's 'unhappiest' nation. Pakistan is ranked 108th on the list.

The report said that older age is associated with higher life satisfaction in India, "refuting some claims that the positive association between age and life satisfaction only exists in high-income nations." On average, older men in India are more satisfied with life than older women "but when taking all other measures into account, older women report higher life satisfaction than their male counterparts," it said.

In India, older adults with secondary or higher education and those of higher social castes report higher life satisfaction than counterparts without formal education and those from scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

"India's older population is the second largest worldwide, with 140 million Indians aged 60 and over, second only to its 250 million Chinese counterparts. Additionally, the average growth rate for Indians aged 60 and above is three times higher than the overall population growth rate of the country," the report said.

Satisfaction with living arrangements, perceived discrimination, and self-rated health emerge as the top three predictors of life satisfaction for India in this study, the report said.

"We found that older men, those in the higher age groups, currently married, and those who were educated, report higher life satisfaction compared to their respective peers. Lower satisfaction with living arrangements, perceived discrimination, and poor self-rated health were important factors associated with low life satisfaction among older Indians," it said.

The findings of this study indicate that strengthening family networks to ensure a comfortable living arrangement for older adults, men, widowed, and those without formal education in particular, and bolstering social networks to reduce discrimination may enhance well-being in older age, it noted.

The report added that Serbia (37th) and Bulgaria (81st) have had the biggest increases in average life evaluation scores since they were first measured by the Gallup World Poll in 2013.

The next two countries showing the largest increases in life evaluations are Latvia (46th) and Congo (Brazzaville) (89th), with rank increases of 44 and 40 places, respectively, between 2013 and 2024.

For the first time, the report gives separate rankings by age group, in many cases varying widely from the overall rankings. Lithuania tops the list for children and young people under 30, while Denmark is the world's happiest nation for those 60 and older.

Watch: Mushfiqur's 'Broken Helmet' Celebration Mocking Mathews, SL Viral

Veteran Bangladesh cricketer Mushfiqur Rahim's broken helmet celebration following the ODI series victory over Sri Lanka added another chapter in the rivalry of the two cricketing nations. The celebration was a reference to Sri Lanka's Angelo Matthews getting timed-out due to a helmet issue when the two sides faced each other in the Cricket World Cup 2023. This was also a response to Sri Lanka cricketers celebrating their T20I series victory over Bangladesh with a timed-out celebration. The video of the celebration has gone viral on social media with various users commenting on the gesture.

Rishad Hossain played an attacking innings of 48 after substitute Tanzid Hasan Tamim hit 84 off 81 balls Monday, steering Bangladesh to a four-wicket win and a 2-1 ODI series victory over Sri Lanka.

Set a modest target after Janith Liyanage's unbeaten 101 guided Sri Lanka to 235 all out in 50 overs, Bangladesh raced to 237-6 in 40.2 overs.

Rishad remained unbeaten on 48 off just 18 balls.

The hosts were in danger when Wanindu Hasaranga forced Mehdiy Hasan Miraz, the last recognised batsman, to give a catch to Pramod Madushan for 25, with Bangladesh still 58 runs away from victory.

But Rishad dispatched the first ball he faced over midwicket for six and did not look back.

He hit four sixes and five fours in his whirlwind innings before Mushfiqur Rahim, 37 not out, finished the game with a boundary off Maheesh Theekshana.

Tanzid led the initial charge, replacing Soumya Sarkar in the second innings as a concussion sub, despite Lahiru Kumara wreaking havoc with 4-48.

Star Bowler's Suspension By ICC Can Be Good News For This IPL Franchise

All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga could be available for initial few games for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League after he was suspended from the upcoming two-Test series against Bangladesh by the ICC, despite coming out of retirement on Tuesday. Hasaranga, who had retired from Tests in August last year, was named in Sri Lanka's 17-man squad for the two-Test series against Bangladesh starting on Friday. But the ICC informed that the 26-year-old has 'breached the threshold of eight demerit points, which, pursuant to article 7.6 of the Code, have been converted into four suspension points' in his latest offence during the third ODI.

"Hasaranga was found guilty of breaching article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'showing dissent at an Umpire's decision during an International Match'," the ICC said on its website.

The incident happened in the 37th over when the right-arm spinner "snatched his cap" from one of the on-field umpires and also "ridiculed" the umpiring in the contest, the ICC said.

"He received a 50 per cent fine and accumulated three demerit points for his offense. This brought his total demerit points to eight in a 24-month period," the ICC said.

Hasaranga already had five demerit points — three of which were docked in the third T20I against Afghanistan in Dambulla last month. He was also suspended for two T20Is against Bangladesh.

"Now, with the addition of the latest demerit points, he has breached the threshold of eight demerit points, which, pursuant to article 7.6 of the Code, have been converted into four suspension points," the ICC said.

"The four suspension points equate to a ban from two Tests or four ODIs or T20Is, whatever comes first — Hasaranga will therefore miss the two ICC World Test Championship Tests against Bangladesh," the governing body added.

Meanwhile, ICC also handed a 50 per cent match fee fine and three demerit points on Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis for "abusing the umpires while shaking hands with them".

"This breached article 2.13 of the Code, which relates to 'Personal abuse of a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire or Match Referee during an International Match'." This was a first offence for Mendis in a 24-month period,” the ICC said.

Both the players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions which were imposed by Andy Pycroft.

The first Test will be played in Sylhet from March 22-26, while the second tie is slated from March 30 to April 3 at Chattogram.

Hasaranga was roped in by SRH at his base price of Rs 1.5 crore.

As per the IPL schedule announced for the first two weeks, SRH will take on Kolkata Knight Riders on March 23 in Kolkata. They will travel to Hyderabad for the tie against Mumbai Indians on March 27 and then proceed to Ahmedabad for the game against Gujarat Titans on March 31.

340-Kg Pet Alligator Seized From Home, Used To Swim With Children

An 11-foot 340-kg kg alligator, which was being kept illegally at a home in Florida, was seized by Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs). In a Facebook post, authorities said that "the owner of the home had built an addition to his house and installed an in-ground swimming pool for his roughly 30-year-old alligator, and allegedly allowed members of the public to get into the water to pet the unsecured alligator". The reptile's name is Albert, according to CNN-affiliate WKBW.

"I'm Albert's dad, that's all there is to it. He's like family to everybody," his owner Tony Cavallaro told the outlet after the seizure on Wednesday.

Mr Cavallaro told WKBW his license to own Albert had expired in 2021 and he tried unsuccessfully to renew it with the Department of Environmental Conservation.

But authorities said it is illegal to keep an alligator at home. "Even if the owner was appropriately licensed, public contact with the animal is prohibited and grounds for license revocation and relocation of the animal," the department told WKBW.

New York Post said that Mr Cavallaro invited children from his neighbourhood to swim with the alligator.

The homeowner "allegedly allowed members of the public to get into the water to pet the unsecured alligator", it quoted the state Department of Environmental Conservation as saying.

Officials said the alligator had a number of health issue, including blindness in both eyes and spinal complications when it was removed from the home.

The alligator's owner is fighting to get his pet reptile back.

"As everyone has probably already heard The DEC and SPCA took Albert away from me saying that I put people in harm's way with him. Everyone who has met Albert or knows Albert knows that this is not true," he said in an online petition.

"I took care of him better than most people take care of their kids," the petition further said.

The man is getting strong support on social media from the community. Many of his friends have said that Albert was a gentle alligator who didn't pose a threat to the people and children he swam with.

Meanwhile, the reptile has been given to a caretaker till a place is found for it.

'T20 WC 5 Days After IPL Final': R Ashwin Sums Up India's Schedule Chaos

It's been almost four months since India lost the World Cup final to Australia on home soil, but the bad memories of the defeat continue to haunt the players and the fans. India marched to the final as the only unbeaten side in the tournament, only to go down at the expense of Australia in the final hurdle. The defeat extended India's ICC trophy drought, with their last success at world stage dating back to 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni's leadership. The year 2023 saw India lose two ICC finals, both to Australia. Last year in June, India also lost to the Pat Cummins-led side in the World Test Championship (WTC) final.

The WTC final was played just days after the IPL 2023 final. This year too the cash-rich league will be followed by the T20 World Cup in West Indies and the USA.

India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin admitted that the team is indeed witnessing an ICC trophy drought.

"We have been on a drought to win ICC trophies for years now and have consistently been knocked out in the semis or finals. And this is yet another year where the ICC T20 World Cup follows the IPL final by just five days, like in the recent past," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

The new season of IPL kicks off on Friday, March 22 with defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on Royal Challengers Bangalore in the tournament opener.

However, the BCCI has only announced the schedule for the first 21 matches, owing to General Elections.

The General elections will be held in India from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024, as announced by the Elections Commission on Saturday. it will be held in seven different phases and the results will be announced on 4 June 2024.

According to reports, the BCCI is exploring the possibility of organising the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in the UAE.

Since the elections dates have now been announced, the BCCI could soon announce the dates of the remaining fixtures, and also take on call on the possible venue change.

"K Kavitha's Brother, Lawyers Delayed Proceedings": Probe Agency's Claim

BRS leader K Kavitha was arrested at 5:20 pm on Friday evening, but 40 minutes later, at 6pm, people claiming to be her brother and lawyers entered the Telangana leader's Banjara Hills home unlawfully and delayed the proceedings, the Enforcement Directorate has claimed.

Ms Kavitha, a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Telangana and the daughter of former chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, was arrested today in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.

"At around 6 pm, few persons who claimed themselves as brother of K Kavitha, lawyers and other persons around 20 in number entered the premises unlawfully. On being asked their identity, none showed their identity. A ruckus was created which delayed the proceedings," said the central probe agency, which investigates financial frauds.

The searches began at 1:45 pm and concluded at 6:45 pm, said the agency.

In a dramatic video, Ms Kavitha's brother and former Telangana minister KT Rama Rao can be seen confronting agency officials after he was asked how family members had entered the house.

Mr Rao accused the officials of violating an undertaking the agency had given to the Supreme Court. "You are in serious trouble," he is heard saying on camera. Legal remedies are available, an ED shot back.

"After the due process of law, K Kavitha was arrested under section 19 of Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002 at 5:20 pm," said the central agency, adding that five mobiles were seized in the searches.

"The search was conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner and no damage to the person or property was caused during the course of the search. During the search proceedings, no religious sentiments of anybody were hurt and Covid 19 protocol was followed," the agency added.

Videos also showed the agency's cars being surrounded when they were leaving with Ms Kavitha.

Mr Rao has, however, claimed the family is cooperating with the agency. Terming the arrest illegal, he said he and other senior leaders have asked party workers to remain peaceful and not prevent the arrest.

The Enforcement Directorate has claimed that Ms Kavitha was part of a lobby called the 'South Group', which played a key role in the alleged Delhi liquor policy scam.

The BRS leader has said in the past that she had done nothing illegal, and accused the BJP of using the ED for political gains.

"Uddhav Thackeray Was Given Many Chances": Devendra Fadnavis To NDTV

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today accused  Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray of failing to deliver on the "many chances" given to him by the people of Mumbai during his tenure as the chief minister of the state.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV's Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia, Mr Fadnavis claimed that the Eknath Shinde government is forced to fix things in Mumbai that should have been fixed years ago.

"Uddhav Thackeray was given many chances by the people of Mumbai but he did not do anything about it. There is not one iconic thing done or built by him in the city," Mr Fadnavis told NDTV.

In June 2022, Mr Thackeray resigned as Maharashtra Chief Minister following a mutiny within the Shiv Sena ranks. A split followed and a floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly put Sena leader Eknath Shinde in the chief minister's chair and Mr Fadnavis was appointed as his deputy. The Shinde faction of the Sena joined hands with the BJP and is currently the ruling party in the state.

Mr Fadnavis slammed Mr Thackeray for his alleged "anti-modi stance and ruled out any possibility of an alliance with his party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

"There is no scope of any such attempts (potential alliance with Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena). You can take note of this. If he is making an attempt, I don't know. From our end, there is no scope and no reason to do so. The roles he has taken, the anti-Modi role... I am sad that, for vote-bank politics, he is now indulging in pseudo-secular, appeasement politics," he said in Hindi.

"He has opposed the Citizenship Amendment Act. I am finding it difficult to understand Bal Thackeray's son could do so. So I think the groups are now divided," he added.

On a potential pact with Mr Thackeray's cousin Raj Thackeray and his Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, Mr Fadnavis said, "We have not begun any alliance talks with Raj Thackeray. We believe in regional identity. Raj Thackeray talks about Marathis while also talking about Hindutva. I won't say that there is no possibility of any alliance. But, we are three partners in this alliance, so it is difficult to add someone new."

Mumbai's Sewage Problem

Praising his government's work in India's financial capital, Mr Fadnavis highlighted the sewage water problem in the city.

"The work that is being done in Mumbai today, should have been done 20 years ago," Mr Fadnavis continued. "There's so much sewage water in Mumbai. The water goes to the oceans through sceptic tanks built during the British Raj. That's why some of our beaches stink."

Last month, the Maharashtra cabinet approved a proposal to extend its Urban Renewal Mission to construct railway overbridges, national highways and sewage treatment plants.

"As soon as we replaced the Uddhav government, we got tenders and we can assure that in the next three years, not a single drop of dirty water will enter our oceans. Mumbai's beaches will resemble that of foreign countries," Mr Fadnavis added.

"Uddhav Thackeray said we do not need bullet trains," Mr Fadnavis said, alluding to the former chief minister's order to review the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project in 2019. "When we came into power, we worked like a bullet. In the next 2.5 years, you will travel by bullet trains in Maharashtra."

On Contesting Lok Sabha Elections

With the Lok Sabha elections just weeks ahead, when asked whether he would be contesting the polls, Mr Fadnavis said, "We have announced 20 seats so far in Maharashtra. All the seats from where people thought I would be contesting have been announced. So, there should not be any discussion on this (on him contesting)."

The BJP has announced candidates for 20 out of 48 Lok Sabha constituencies in Maharashtra. The party is in alliance in the state with Mr Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.

Indian-Origin Couple, Daughter Killed In "Suspicious" Fire In Canada: Cops

An Indian-origin couple and their teenage daughter were killed in a "suspicious" fire which tore through their home last week in Canada's Ontario province, police said on Friday.

A fire engulfed a home at the Big Sky Way and Van Kirk Drive area of Brampton on March 7, a press release by the Peel Police said.

After the blaze was put out, investigators located what was believed to be human remains within the gutted house, but the number of people killed couldn't be ascertained at the time.

The charred remains were on Friday identified as those of three family members: 51-year-old Rajiv Warikoo; his wife, 47-year-old Shilpa Kotha; and their 16-year-old daughter, Mahek Warikoo.

Police said that they resided at the address before the fire.

Peel police Constable Taryn Young on Friday said the fire had been deemed suspicious, the CTV news channel reported.

"At this time, we are investigating this with our homicide bureau, and we are deeming this as suspicious as the Ontario Fire Marshal has deemed that this fire was not accidental," the report quoted Young as saying.

"There's not much left to it," Young said when asked about the possible cause of the fire.

"Looking into something like that as a fire marshal, I'm sure it's very tough when there is not much left to look at. But we are exhausting all avenues," she said.

The deceased family's neighbour, Kenneth Yousaf, said that the family had lived on the street for about 15 years, and he never noticed any problems with them.

Yousaf said he was alerted to the fire last week by a family member, who heard a big "bang." "When we came out, the house was on fire. So sad. Within a few hours, everything was down to the ground," the report quoted Yousaf as saying.

In a press release, police said they are continuing to investigate the deaths of the three family members and urged anyone with information to come forward.

"The circumstances surrounding the house fire remains the focus of an active investigation, and anyone with information or video footage (dashcam or otherwise) is urged to contact Homicide detectives," police said.

PSL Team Receives 5-Run Penalty For 'Illegal Fielding' In Bizarre Incident

Peshawar Zalmi were awarded five penalty runs after a throw from the Multan Sultans fielder hit Mohammad Rizwan's wicket-keeping glove which was lying on the ground during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 match on Thursday. Zalmi batter Tom Kohler-Cadmore played the ball from spinner Khushdil Shah towards fine-leg and Rizwan dashed from his wicket-keeping stance to retrieve the ball. The ball was ultimately collected by a fielder and his throw hit one of Rizwan's gloves that he took off and threw on the ground while running. Babar Azam, who was in the non-striker's end, pointed it out to umpire Aleem Dar who decided to award five runs as penalty due to 'illegal fielding'.

According to the rules of cricket, a fielder “will be deemed to have fielded the ball illegally if, while the ball is in play he/she willfully discards a piece of clothing, equipment or any other object which subsequently makes contact with the ball”.

A similar incident happened during the 2022 T20 World Cup when South Africa conceded a five-run penalty against Zimbabwe when the ball hit Quinton de Kock's glove.

Earlier, Wasim Akram blasted the infrastructure of the Pakistan's cricket stadiums and said that the authorities have been unsuccessful in maintaining the three stadiums on the northern side.

During a discussion on A Sports, Akram was asked by a fan about Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) not investing in a new stadium in northern Pakistan with references to India's Dharamsala Stadium and New Zealand's Queenstown Stadium.

Akram remarked that the roof on the Gaddafi Stadium is currently in poor condition before adding that they can only dream of building a new stadium despite having a lot of area in places like Abbottabad.
