Explained: Why Have Temperatures Reached Record Highs In India?

Several parts of India grappled with unusually high temperatures this week, forcing schools to close and hospitals to create special units to treat heat-related illnesses, while workers on construction sites were given a "paid holiday" in the afternoon.

Here is a look at what caused the unprecedented heat in the country.

HOW UNUSUAL HAS THE SITUATION BEEN THIS YEAR?

While every year temperatures in India tend to peak in the months of May and June, the number of heatwave days recorded over northwestern and eastern parts of the country this season have been more than double the normal, with eastern India also experiencing its hottest April on record.

India declares a heatwave day when the maximum temperature in any given region is 4.5 -6.4 degrees Celsius higher than normal.

Parts of the country have touched new highs in terms of the maximum temperature, including Delhi, which recorded the country's highest ever temperature at 52.9 C (127.22 degree F) on Wednesday.

While this figure may be revised as officials are investigating whether it was caused by an error in the sensor, two areas in Delhi also recorded 49.9 C a day earlier - an all-time high for the city.

In northern Haryana state, which surrounds Delhi from three sides, the Rohtak region recorded its highest-ever temperature on Friday at 47.5 C.

WHY HAVE TEMPERATURES RISEN THIS SEASON?

Scientists from India's weather department said that while a rise in temperatures during May and June is normal, it is usually controlled by periodic western disturbances, which are weather systems originating in the Mediterranean Sea that bring moisture-laden winds.

These neutralise the impact of the hot, dry air coming from the direction of Pakistan and Afghanistan into northern India.

This year, however, there were more western disturbances between March and early May than usual, while their strength has reduced over the last "10-15 days", leaving the wind coming from neighbouring countries unchecked and causing temperatures to rise.

Global and India-based experts say such weather changes are being worsened by human-driven climate change.

WHY IS THE SITUATION IN DELHI PARTICULARLY BAD?

Surrounded by alluvial plains in the north and east, the Thar desert in the west, and the Aravalli hill ranges in the south, Delhi, with a population of about 20 million, is one of India's fastest-growing areas.

Officials and experts say apart from its location, the capital is also particularly vulnerable because of its large population, scattered vegetation, and increased construction in the last two decades, with the built-up area increasing from 31.4% in 2003 to more than 38% in 2022.

WHEN WILL THE HEAT ABATE?

According to the India Meteorological Department, the temperature in northwest, central, and east India will gradually decline over the next three days because of the impact of the approaching western disturbance, rainfall, and the southwesterly wind blowing from the Arabian Sea.

Monsoon rains reached the southernmost state of Kerala on Thursday, bringing relief to residents there.

About Last Night: Anushka-Virat Jet Off To New York. See Viral Airport Pic

After wrapping up the Indian Premier League last week, Virat Kohli jetted off to New York for the T20 World Cup 2024. His travel partners were the usual suspects - actor-wife Anushka Sharma and their kids Vamika and Akaay. The family of four was spotted at the Mumbai airport. While Anushka didn't pose for the cameras, Virat stopped and posed for the lensmen stationed there. He also asked the shutterbugs not to capture the actress as she was with the kids. The cricketer sported a white T-shirt teamed with a beige shirt and denims. Anushka, on the other hand, was dressed in a black T-shirt and blue denims. In one of the viral pictures, Anushka and Virat are seen posing with the airport staff. Take a look.

Two days ago, Virat Kohli enjoyed a dinner date with his actor-wife Anushka Sharma, along with fellow cricketer Zaheer Khan, his actor-wife Sagarika Ghatge and cricket presenter Gaurav Kapur among others. Several photos and videos from their dinner date have been doing the rounds on social media. In one of the videos, Anushka and her friends are seen exiting an eatery. The actress was all smiles for the camera. She can be seen dressed in a white top layered with a matching shirt and faded blue denims. Virat, on the other hand, opted for a black shirt teamed with grey pants.

In another viral picture, Virat and Anushka are seen posing with the restaurant's staff.

Earlier this month, Virat Kohli hosted a lavish birthday party for his actor-wife Anushka Sharma. Several unseen photos and videos from Anushka's 36th birthday have been doing the rounds on social media. The soirée was a dreamy pink affair. Among the myriads of beautiful elements were the pink-themed table arrangements, adorned with an array of delicate props and embellishments. From fairy lights to pearl-adorned plates, candles, and photo frames with floral imprints, every detail spoke of sophistication and finesse.

For the unversed, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma got married on December 11, 2017. They are parents to two children - Vamika and Akaay.

Mercedes That Killed 2 Returned To Owner, Victim's Family Slams Cops

A speeding Mercedes C200 that killed two men on a two-wheeler in Nagpur on February 25 has been returned to the owner even as the investigation into the case is still open.

The car, being driven by a woman - identified as Ritika Maloo, collided with the side wall of the Ram Jhula bridge in the city before crashing into the two-wheeler and killing the rider and the pillion - Mohd Hussain Mustafa and Mohd Ateef Ziya.

Now, NDTV Marathi has traced the black Mercedes C200 parked on the road under a tow sign while the police are yet to arrest the woman accused of drunk driving, three months after the accident.

Mohammad Atiq, Mohd Ateef Ziya's brother, accompanied the NDTV team to where the car was parked and identified it as the one that killed his brother and another man. "The police were more concerned about returning the car that killed my brother instead of arresting the driver Ritika Maloo and her friend Madhuri Sarda. It is not okay, sir," he said.

"My family is still reeling under the shock of my brother's death three months ago. They are still grieving and with this, their wounds have once again been laid bare," he said.

According to media reports, Ms Maloo and her friend Ms Sarda were returning home from a club in the night when the accident happened. The two women fled the spot and the two men were rushed to the Mayo Hospital for treatment where they died.

The police scanned CCTV footage from the club and recovered the liquor bills as evidence.

Nikki Haley Writes "Finish Them" On Israeli Bombs Days After Rafah Strike

Former US presidential hopeful Nikki Haley has been photographed writing "Finish Them" on an Israeli shell as she toured sites near the northern border with Lebanon.

The photograph was posted on X on Tuesday by Danny Danon, a member of the Israeli parliament and former ambassador to the United Nations, who was accompanying Haley on her visit.

"'Finish Them'. This is what my friend the former ambassador Nikki Haley wrote," Danon said in his post that showed a kneeling Haley writing on a shell with a purple marker pen.

Haley was a hawkish UN envoy under Donald Trump, and her term overlapped with Danon.

The Gaza war was sparked by Hamas's October 7 attack on southern Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,189 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on the latest Israeli official figures.

Militants also took 252 hostages, 121 of whom remain in Gaza, including 37 the army says are dead.

Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 36,096 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the territory's health ministry.

Haley, 52, abandoned her White House bid in March after heavy defeats in Republican primary contests to Trump, and last week said that she would vote for him in the election.

Trump has ruled her out of contention to be his vice president, but she is a potential presidential runner in 2028.

The White House said Tuesday that President Joe Biden has no plans to change his Israel policy following a deadly weekend strike on Rafah but that he is not turning a "blind eye" to the plight of Palestinian civilians.

Influencer Bobby Kataria Arrested Over Human Trafficking Charges

Social media influencer Balwant Kataria alias Bobby Kataria was arrested on Monday for allegedly human trafficking of two Uttar Pradesh youths, police said.

The case has been registered against Kataria under section 370 of the IPC at the Bajghera Police Station Gurugram, police said.

The complainants, Arun Kumar, a resident of Fatehpur in Uttar Pradesh and Manish Tomar, a resident of Hapur, said that they were unemployed. They were in touch with Kataria via Instagram.

The complainants told the police that on Bobby's YouTube channel MBK, they saw an advertisement about abroad-based job. Following this they called Bobby Kataria on on his WhatsApp. Bobby called them to meet his office in Sector 109 on the pretext of getting them a job in a foreign country.

The complainant then met Kataria in his office on 1 February 2024 and paid Rs 2,000 for registration.

After this, on the request of Bobby Kataria, on February 13, Rs 50,000 was transferred to his official account which was registered in the name of MBK Global Visa Private Limited.

Thereafter, on Bobby's instruction on March 14, another amount of Rs 1 lakh was transferred to the account of a person named Ankit Shaukeen. Kataria sent the tickets of Vientiane (Laos) through Shaukeen's WhatsApp.

On March 28, as per the instructions of Bobby Kataria, Kumar got Rs 50,000 converted into USD at the airport and boarded the flight to Vientiane.

Similarly, lakhs of rupees were taken from his friend Manish Tomar on the pretext of sending him to Singapore, but he was also made to board a flight to Vientiane.

When both of them landed at Vientiane airport, they met a young man named Abhi, who described himself as a friend of Bobby Kataria and a Pakistani agent.

He dropped them off at the Hotel Mican Son in Vientiane, where they found a young man named Ankit Shaukeen and Nitish Sharma alias Rocky. They took the victims to an anonymous Chinese company. There both the friends were severely beaten and their passports were snatched.

At the same time, they were forced to commit cyber fraud against US citizens. Both of them were threatened that if the work was not done as per their instructions then they would not be able to return to India and they would be killed there.

"About 150 Indians including women were brought into that company through human trafficking by brokers like Bobby Kataria on the pretext of jobs. Somehow, we escaped from there and reached the Indian Embassy and came back to India and filed a police complaint against Kataria," the complainant told the police.

Nadal To Retire After French Open Exit? 14-Time Winner Says "I Am Not..."

Rafael Nadal's record-breaking French Open career came to its likely end on Monday when the 14-time champion slumped to a demoralising first round defeat against Alexander Zverev. Nadal, who turns 38 on June 3, went down 6-3, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to world number four Zverev, suffering only his fourth loss in 116 matches at Roland Garros since his 2005 title-winning debut. It was the first time he had been defeated in Paris in the opening round and will again lead to questions over his long-term future in the sport.

"I don't know if this is the last time I will be here, I am not 100% sure but if it is then I wanted to enjoy it," said Nadal. "The feelings today are difficult to describe in words."

Plagued by injuries, which had limited him to just four events since January last year, former world number one Nadal is now 275 in the rankings and was unseeded in Paris.

However, he insisted on the eve of the tournament that he was "100% keeping the door open" on his future in a sport which has brought him 22 Grand Slam titles.

In a repeat of the 2022 semi-final, which Nadal won when Zverev quit with ankle ligament damage, the Spaniard had his chances.

He was a break of serve up in the second and third sets, only to be pinned back on both occasions by his in-form 27-year-old opponent.

Chants of "Rafa, Rafa" had loudly echoed under the roof of Court Philippe Chatrier which was shut tight against the torrential rain sweeping across the grounds and bringing havoc to the schedule.

They subsided to silence when Nadal was broken to love in his opening service game and he was left to regret his inability to convert two break points in the fourth game.

Nadal saved two set points in the ninth game but surrendered the opener after 50 minutes when he buried a loose forehand into the net.

It was only the fourth opening set he had lost at Roland Garros.

Nadal broke for the first time in the match to lead 3-2 in the second set but couldn't back up the advantage and handed the break back to three-time semi-finalist Zverev as he served for the set.

A tense tie-breaker followed which the German claimed, buoyed by stretching to 5/3 on the back of a gruelling 19-shot rally.

Nadal dug deep and with the likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek having watched from the packed stands, he broke and held for 2-0 in the third set.

However, Zverev again roared back to level at 2-2 before a besieged Nadal had to save four break points in a 13-minute fifth game to stay in contention.

The effort was too much and a composed Zverev was soon 4-3 up and the match was over when Nadal fired a forehand wide and long.

Doctor On Duty Not Qualified To Treat Babies: Delhi Police On Hospital Fire

Expired licence, doctor on duty not qualified to treat newborns, no emergency exits - these are among several lapses that have surfaced after a massive blaze at a children's hospital in the national capital that killed seven newborn babies. The police evacuated twelve infants from the building after receiving a call about the massive fire at Baby Care New Born Hospital in east Delhi's Vivek Vihar at 11.29 pm on Saturday. Of these, five survived the accident and were shifted to another hospital.

After the fire - which had quickly spread to two adjacent buildings - was doused, the hospital was thoroughly inspected by police, fire brigade staff and a crime team. The teams found out that after the fire broke out, oxygen cylinders kept in the two-storey building exploded, due to which the adjacent buildings were damaged. What also came to light were several shortcomings on the part of the hospital authorities.

No Fire Extinguishers Or Emergency Exit

During the inspection of the hospital and examination of nursing staff, it was revealed that the facility didn't have any fire extinguishers or an emergency exit, police said. The doctor who was on duty when the accident happened was not qualified to treat newborns in need of neo-natal incentive care, they added. Dr Akash - a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) graduate - has been arrested.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Surendra Chaudhary said that the hospital had more than the authorised number of oxygen cylinders. "Initially, we had filed a case for negligence. After the inspection, we have also invoked sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of IPC," he said.

Expired Licence

The licence issued to the hospital by the Directorate General of Health Services or DGHS had already expired on March 31, nearly two months before the accident. Moreover, the police said even though the licence allowed for five beds at the facility, twelve newborns were in the hospital when the fire broke out.

Police probe into the accident disclosed that the hospital has three other branches in Punjabi Bagh (Delhi), Faridabad (Haryana) and Gurgaon (Haryana). Dr Naveen Khichi, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Pediatrics, is the owner of these branches. Dr Khichi and his wife Dr Jagriti, a dentist, run the Vivek Vihar facility, the police said. The owner (45), who had been on the run since Saturday night, has also been arrested.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of the victims.

The Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the fire tragedy at the neonatal hospital.

Bollywood superstar and Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan made his first public appearance since suffering a heat stroke as he attended the IPL Final against Sunrisers Hyderabad with wife Gauri Khan on Sunday. SRK was hospitalised in Ahmedabad after he suffered a heat stroke following KKR's Qualifier 1 match against SRH but he was discharged after a couple of days. He was in attendance along with his wife Gauri Khan and children - Suhana Khan and Aryan Khan. SRK was wearing a mask during the match and his entire family was seen celebrating as KKR produced a brilliant bowling display.

Meanwhile, SRH captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat.

"We will bat first. Looks like a good wicket, played on a different wicket the other night. There was no dew on the other night's game, we have a style which doesn't work always, but when it does, it's very damaging. I want to crack with the bat first. We have done well defending scores. Pretty much the same, Shahbaz comes in for Samad," Cummins said at the toss.

On the other hand, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer said that he wanted to field first if he won the toss.

"We would have bowled, we'll get a fair idea about how the pitch will play. It's a red soil and we played our last game on a similar surface. We need to stay with the present, stick to the basics and execute all our plans. Every individual is taking responsibility, this is a big game, we've plenty of people who're playing in a final for the first time, nervous, but this is also a good chance. Amid Divorce Rumours, Report Says Hardik To Join Squad For T20 WC On...

India's vice-captain Hardik Pandya will be linking up with the Rohit Sharma-led side in New York on Sunday afternoon ahead of the upcoming Men's T20 World Cup. Pandya was a notable omission in visuals of first batch of Indian team players and support staff departing for New York from Mumbai on Saturday night. A report in Cricbuzz on Sunday said, Pandya had been vacationing overseas at an undisclosed location after Mumbai Indians' campaign ended in IPL 2024 with a defeat to Lucknow Super Giants at the Wankhede Stadium, and is now on his way to New York to link up with the Indian team for the showpiece event starting from June 1.

KKR vs SRH IPL 2024 Final Live Blog | IPL 2024 Final Live Scorecard

Pandya had a torrid time in IPL 2024, where he was constantly under the spotlight for his disappointing all-round performances post an ankle injury layoff and was even booed by the crowd in both home and away games.

With the bat, Hardik amassed just 216 runs in 14 matches of IPL 2024 at an average of 18 and a strike-rate of 143.05. With the ball, he picked 11 wickets at an economy-rate of 10.75 and average of 35.18.

A lot was expected from him as a leader, especially after he captained Gujarat Titans to IPL 2022 title and IPL 2023 runners-up finish. But Mumbai Indians finished at the bottom of the points table.

The report added that Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Avesh Khan, who played for Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2024 in Chennai on May 24, will join the team later, so as traveling reserve Rinku Singh, who will be playing in the IPL title clash on Sunday night. It also said Virat Kohli sought permission to join the squad late.

Apart from Rohit, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and traveling substitutes Shubman Gill and Khaleel Ahmed, left for New York from Mumbai on Saturday night.

India is set to play their lone warm-up game against Bangladesh at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 1. Their Men's T20 World Cup campaign begins on June 5 against Group A opponents Ireland in New York, followed by a highly-anticipated clash against Pakistan on June 9.

India will then face co-hosts USA on June 12 in New York, before going to Florida to take on Canada on June 15 to wrap up their Group A league matches. India were the inaugural winners of the Men's T20 World Cup in 2007 and are aiming to claim the silverware for just the second time through the upcoming tournament.

NSA Ajit Doval Praises Israel's Response To Iran Attack, Cites Chanakya

National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Friday praised Israel for strongly defending its borders amidst sharp escalation by Hamas and other terror outfits and explained how its harnessing of technology thwarted the evil designs of a 'gang of rivals'.

Addressing the 21st BSF Investiture Ceremony, NSA Ajit Doval said: "Some days ago, there were a series of missile attacks on Israel from Iran. Out of 1500 missiles, 99 per cent of missiles were stopped while only two to three could hit its territory. This is the strength of technology."

Further explaining the importance of intelligence gathering, he said that given the size of the country and its vast population, India was 'better placed' in mounting defence of its borders.

He said that the lack of 'tactical intelligence' proved to be the major reason for the October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in hundreds of Hamas infiltrators breaching its territory and massacring its citizens.

"We are fortunate to have a huge force, a bustling population on our borders. Villagers here, familiar to terrains and local languages, can serve as eye and ear for the forces, in intelligence gathering," he told the audience.

NSA Doval lauded the Border Security Forces (BSF) for doing a splendid and impressive job in guarding the nation's frontiers and also helping in internal security on special occasions.

On a lighter note, Mr Doval also recalled the mantra of Chanakya, the famed strategist and said, "You can't control the borders where the local population is hostile to you."

Dishing out tips on security management in border areas, he said: "You must befriend the border population. Locals shouldn't feel that people in uniforms are here to control them, to impose restrictions on them, to make their lives more regulated and complicated. It should be rather friendly and warm."

A 25-year-old Delhi resident, accused of endangering the safety of pedestrians by allegedly driving his SUV recklessly on a street here, was arrested on Friday, police said.

Prince Mavi has been booked for violation of road traffic rules and fined Rs 35,000 as a penalty, they said.

In videos that surfaced on social media, he is seen driving an SUV on a street near Amity University and braking close to pedestrians, leaving them terrified. Those terrified by his acts included college-going men and women, it was seen in the videos.

"On Friday, a viral video on social media came to the notice in which a Mahindra Thar registered in Haryana was seen dangerously performing stunts, putting the lives of people in danger on the road of a private university in Sector-125, Noida," a police spokesperson said.

Siddaramaiah Says Couldn't Marry The Girl He Loved Because Of Their Castes

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recalled how his "love story" was cut short by rampant casteism in society. He was speaking at an event in Mysuru last night.

During an event on inter-caste marriage on the occasion of "Buddha Poornima", the full moon night when Gautam Buddha was born, the Chief Minister reminisced about his college days.

“I wanted to have an inter-caste marriage but it did not happen. The girl did not accept it,” he said.

“When I was studying, I fell in love with a girl. Don't mistake me, I was intent on marrying her but her family and she did not agree. Hence, the marriage did not happen.

“A situation emerged where I had to marry a girl from my caste. My marriage happened within my community,” the Chief Minister said. The audience appreciated his candid admission with claps, laughter, and cheers.

Extending his full support and cooperation to inter-caste marriages, Siddaramaiah promised his government will offer all assistance for such marriages.

According to him, efforts to abolish casteism and build equality in society have been happening since the time of Gautama Buddha and 12th Century AD social reformer from Karnataka Lord Basaveshwara.

He rued that the efforts of many social reformers to build an equality-based society did not bear results yet.

There are only two ways to eradicate the social evil of casteism, he said. “One is inter-caste marriages and the second is socio-economic empowerment among all communities. Social equality cannot happen in society without socio-economic upliftment,” Siddaramaiah said.

"BJP's 370 Target Not A Random Number": S Jaishankar On NDTV Battleground

With the Lok Sabha elections winding down to a close, NDTV's Battleground saw a trio of heavyweights speaking on a range of issues, including predictions for the next government, employment and India's rising stature on the world stage.

Foreign policy was a big part of the discussion because one of the three panellists in the show, hosted by NDTV's Editor-in-Chief Sanjay Pugalia, was External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The BJP and the opposition's prospects in the election were addressed by both Mr Jaishankar and economist, author and former member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, Surjit Bhalla.

The third member of the panel, Manish Sabharwal - vice-chairman of TeamLease Services, one of India's biggest employers - helped dissect the economy and bust unemployment myths.

Another important talking point through the hour-long show was Lutyens' Delhi - a reference to the traditional elite - and its dwindling importance in the India of today. The "Lutyens' Gang" is,in fact, how the discussion started with Mr Jaishankar saying it is a way of thinking and not necessarily a factor of where people live.

Mr Jaishankar said he had been to 12 states and spoken to people from all walks of life and different age groups. He said the BJP's target of 370 was not a random number, but thought and analysis had gone into it.

"For the middle-aged and senior citizens, the government's record in the past 10 years is very important, they feel their lives have been changed. When the youth talk about the government, they talk about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and believe a lot can be done now. They are optimistic about their future. So, for some it's hope, for others, it is the record. One thing I will say, though, is the level of people's interest in foreign policy has been a surprise... even in small cities," he said.

Vote Share Significantly Up?

Responding to some people saying that this is a waveless election, Mr Bhalla said he did not think there was a wave in 2019 as well.

"A wave is when there is an outlier, there is an extreme. The biggest issue is how much people's welfare has improved, and this is true for every country. By that yardstick, the changes, progress, welfare of the people in the past 10 years - and I am not talking about Lutyens' alone, I am talking about 95-99% of the people - this has not been seen before. If the BJP's vote share reaches 42-43%, then I will say there will be a wave," he said.

"I think it could be 42% for the BJP, up from 37% in 2019. People compare it to 1952 and 1957, when the Congress had a vote share of between 45 and 48%. But now you have to talk about BJP and allies, because the BJP is not contesting all the seats. The NDA, well within the realm of possibility, may have a vote share between 46 and 48 per cent," the economist added.

BJP's Prospects

Asked what number he would choose if he had to place a bet on the number of seats the BJP would get in the upcoming polls, Dr Jaishankar said he would leave the exact number to experts like Mr Bhalla. He said he felt pro-incumbency in several states.

"I went to Kerala several times last year. I went to Telangana for the election. These are not the BJP's traditional states. I sensed an emerging energy there. I can say that the trend in our favour is very positive. I feel our vote share could go up by five percentage points from what it was in 2019, it could even be more than that. On the basis of my experience, I think our numbers will go up, not down," he said.

On the BJP's claims that it will perform well in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha and West Bengal, the external affairs minister said the BJP is a "professional, serious" party and does not rely on guesswork.

"We analyse at the booth level and move upwards. When we say we will get this number of seats in this state, a lot of thought has gone into it. You have said the (BJP's) target of 370 seats is a slogan. I don't think PM Modi has randomly mentioned a number. Some thought has gone into it. It is clear that we will be able to hold our position in several states. In some states, such as Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradeh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, we will increase our seats," he said.

Problems With Maldives Exaggerated?

To a question on foreign policy challenges in the neighbourhood despite India's rising stature globally, Mr Jaishankar said, "Yes there are challenges, they will remain. The neighbourhood itself is a reason for the challenges. We have to increase our capabilities at home and also to compete abroad. Foreign policy is a competitive activity, no one will help you or do you a favour."

"There is some amount of exaggeration as well, some people say everything has gone wrong with the Maldives. Yes, there are some problems but I don't think the situation is so bad or relations have changed so much. If you compare, an Indian company had been removed from the airport earlier (in 2012). In Sri Lanka, our image has changed. In Bangladesh, terrorists and separatists used to operate from there, now that is over. The Nepal that used to say it will never export electricity to India is very enthusiastic," he said.

Mr Jaishankar said that sometimes there are attempts to mislead and spread propaganda as well. He emphasised that the government's effort is to strengthen the neighbourhood and make countries believe that they also stand to benefit from India's progress.

"We have to take this belief forward. I think a lot has been done in 10 years," he said.

Constitution Changing?

Mr Jaishankar also took the opposition's allegation of the BJP intending to change the Constitution and used it to take a dig at the Congress.

Reiterating the BJP's claims that the UPA government was run by remote control and senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was actually taking all the important decisions, the minister said, "Let me remind you of the record on the Constitution. Nearly 85% of the amendments made so far have been made by the Congress. There is no reservation on the basis of religion in the Constitution. Which section has a provision for remote control? But that was done during 10 years of the UPA government. So, they violate the Constitution."

Mr Jaishankar also took a jibe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his recent statement of being an insider in the system.

"He said there was discrimination during the time of his grandmother (Indira Gandhi), father (Rajiv Gandhi) and the UPA. I agree with that. But he hasn't been in the system for 10 years, so he has no experience, he has no information (about those years)," he said.

Circling back to the Lutyens' Delhi, the minister said, "Look at the President, the PM, the cabinet ministers, the MPs, can't you see a change? Can you see the same elitists? There used to be talk of a Doon School gang, now there is possibly be no one from the Doon School in Parliament."

Third Term Plans

On the roadmap for a possible third term of the Modi government, the external affairs minister said the upcoming election is a national one.

"There may be local problems, but people will vote based on whether they believe in Modiji or someone else... and there is no other face. We have shown the country an optimistic future and people believe in us. We speak about Viksit Bharat (a developed India), the other side tries to scare," he said.

"We were told months ago to plan for the third term. even during elections, we get feedback from the Prime Minister on this. When the PM says the past 10 years were a trailer, don't take it lightly. There will be a focus on education, skill development, employment opportunities, technology, sunrise industries, and manufacturing. People say manufacturing can't happen In India, but I am certain it can. PM Modi has the vision as well as the talent to make it happen. This is his speciality," he said.

Mr Jaishankar stressed that the overall atmosphere for investors will also get better.

"Investors look at political stability. Whenever a government comes in the second term, they make corrections based on the experiences in the previous two terms. A Centre-state alignment will also happen after the elections. Even if the state does not have an NDA partner, they will adjust because they also stand to gain. Some people are part of an alliance that they know has no future. They will also be normal after the election," he said.

Welfare Politics

Making a strong statement on welfare politics and the lessons that can be learnt from developing countries, Mr Jaishankar said, "For the foreseeable future, the government has to provide basics to people, like ration, housing, power, health and medicines. We should take a lesson from developed countries, who are not being able to manage their health system, where urban poverty is now growing. Our commitment is to keep schemes like Mudra loan yojana, anna yojana (free ration scheme) and housing going at least for the next five years.

"We should not look at the Western definition of welfarism. We need welfare for now, but efficient welfarism, without leakage. This has been good for the economy. The rural economy has grown because of the anna yojana. Farmer income has also grown," he said.

Mr Sabharwal also said that the welfare state will have to stay and that there is no such thing as poor people, but "people in poor places".

"Three poor places are not places per se, it's which sector you are working in, which firm and what skills you have. Agriculture employs 42% of labour force, but accounts for 14% of GDP. IT sector is worshipped but it's a rounding error in terms of labour force - about 1% - yet accounts for 8% of GDP. Firms have a difference of 25 times in terms of productivity."

For poor places, he said, welfare state will have to stay.

"Because we can't move 42% out of agriculture. It's not a bulb that goes on, it's a gentle sunrise, done over 10-20 years. So if a patient is in the ICU, you must give triage, but if a patient comes every day, somebody has to tell him to lose weight or quit smoking or do something. Therefore, the economy is being put through some short-term pain for long-term gain," he stressed.

'Employed Poverty'

On unemployment being a major issue in the elections, Mr Sabharwal said the real challenge is "employed poverty".

"Unemployment has never been a challenge. It's been between 4-8% since 1947. Our problem is employed poverty - people have jobs but not the salaries they want. If there would have been 45% unemployment, price of labour would have fallen exponentially. The only information in an economy are votes and prices, everything else is a model. The price of labour has gone up everywhere. I have employees in 5,000 cities and the average salary now is Rs 28,000. If 300 million had left the labour force, how would that happen," he asked.

"The price of labour does not suggest unemployment is a very important labour market issue or political issue," the TeamLease vice-chairman said.

Mr Jaishankar also responded to the opposition's claim of rising unemployment and emphasised that 46 crore people have taken Mudra loans and 28 km of highways and 14 km of railway lines are built in a day.

"If all this is happening, someone must be working, some must have taken loans. Hence, saying so many crore people are unemployed or there is so much unemployment... Like he (Mr Sabharwal) said, there are only two firm indices, votes and prices," the minister said.

"When we go to meet the public, we ask 'are you getting ration?'. 81 crore people get free ration, without leakage, every month. People in Lutyens' Delhi have got all these basic necessities so they don't give them any weight, for them it's taken for granted.  Four crore people have got houses. The average family size in India is 4.8 - so, 19 crore people have got houses after 2014 and they thank Modiji for it," he stressed.

Mr Bhalla said employment has grown the most between 2014 and 2024 and between 1999-2004, both under NDA governments. Jobless growth, on the contrary, happened most between 2004 and 2011, he claimed.

'Once In A Country's Lifetime'

Sharing an interesting anecdote illustrating India's rise, Mr Sabharwal said, "In 1994 when I went to the US, there was a front page copy in the Wall Street Journal saying India is more interesting than important. I hope the journalist is eating the paper on which he wrote that."

"Because, what is happening in the country is not once in a decade or once in a millennium, it is once in the lifetime of a country, because 50% of the FDI since 1947 has come in the last five years. In 2021, we exported more software than Saudi Arabia did oil. The next 25 years for India will be very different than the past 25 years, not because of luck, but because of what has happened," he said.

"Most Heart-Breaking Photo": SRH Batter's Distraught Reaction vs KKR

Mitchell Starc stuck thrice in the powerplay as Kolkata Knight Riders bowled out Sunrisers Hyderabad to 159 in Qualifier 1 of the IPL here on Tuesday. Rahul Tripathi top-scored for SRH with 55 off 35 balls while Heinrich Klaasen smashed 32 off 21 balls. The 62-run stand between Tripathi and Klaasen was the lone positive in an otherwise underwhelming batting effort.

Tripathi was run out after a superb effort by Andre Russell. HIs reaction after getting out has gone viral.

IPL's third highest run-getter Head was all over the place when he went for a wild heave against the lanky Australian, who got the ball nipping slightly away after pitching and knocking down the off and middle stumps to dismiss the batter for his second consecutive duck.

Starc then bounced out Reddy with wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz settling himself well under the ball for a simple grab.

Shahbaz was the next to depart as he chopped one onto his wickets looking to guide it down to the third man.

Starc's opening spell of 3-0-22-3 gave KKR complete control of the proceedings as the other bowlers thrived in the situation to drive home the advantage.

Reduced to 39/3, SRH needed a counterattack and that came from Rahul Tripathi (55 off 35) but it was far from enough.

Tripathi soaked in pressure well to keep the boundaries flowing for SRH but he did not find enough support from the other end, beyond a 62-run stand for the fifth wicket with Heinrich Klaasen.

The burly South African, who had scored a vital 49 in the last match, did not go all out but played a crucial knock of 32, which came off 21 balls with three fours and a six until he found the man at deep midwicket off Varun Chakravarthy in the 11th over.

Facing the task of rebuilding again, there was no respite for the struggles that SRH had to endure when Tripathi was run out after a brilliant effort in the field from Andre Russell caught the SRH batter halfway through the pitch when there was perhaps no run on offer.

Abdul Samad hammered a six off his first ball but his resistance too did not last long enough and the last of the recognised SRH batters, impact player Sanvir Singh, was cleaned up by Sunil Narine (1/40) on the first ball he faced.

SRH skipper Pat Cummins played a crucial knock of 30 off 24 while also putting on a vital 33-run stand for the last wicket with Vijayakanth Viyaskanth to take SRH beyond the 150-mark.

UK's Infected Blood Scandal That Killed 3,000 Was Covered Up: Report

A decades-long UK scandal in which thousands of people died after being treated with infected blood was covered up and largely could have been avoided, according to a bombshell report published Monday.

More than 30,000 people were infected with viruses such as HIV and hepatitis after being given contaminated blood in Britain between the 1970s and early 1990s, the Infected Blood Inquiry concluded.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday said he was "truly sorry" for the decades-long institutional cover-up that saw thousands of people receive infected blood products. "I want to make a wholehearted and unequivocal apology for this terrible injustice," he told MPs, promising to pay "whatever it costs" to compensate those affected and the families of victims who died.

Victims included those needing blood transfusions for accidents and in surgery, and those suffering from blood disorders such as haemophilia who were treated with donated blood plasma products.

Some 3,000 of them died, and more will follow, in what has been described as the biggest treatment disaster in the eight-decade history of the state-run National Health Service (NHS).

In some instances, children with bleeding disorders were treated as "objects for research". Many went on to develop and die from HIV and hepatitis.

The long-awaited report, running to more than 2,500 pages, laid bare a "catalogue of failures" with "catastrophic" consequences for victims and their loved ones.

"I have to report that it could largely, though not entirely, have been avoided," concluded its author, judge Brian Langstaff.

His team found that successive governments and health professionals failed to mitigate risks despite it being apparent by the early 1980s that the cause of AIDS could be transmitted by blood.

Blood donors were not screened properly and blood products were imported from abroad, including from the United States where drug users and prisoners were used for donations.

Too many transfusions were also given when they were not necessarily needed, the report added.

There were even attempts to conceal the scandal, including evidence that officials in the health department destroyed documents in 1993.

"Viewing the response of the NHS and of government overall, the answer to the question, 'Was there a cover-up?' is that there has been," the report stated.

"Not in the sense of a handful of people plotting in an orchestrated conspiracy to mislead, but in a way that was more subtle, more pervasive and more chilling in its implications.

- 'Vindicated' -

"In this way there has been a hiding of much of the truth," it added.

On top of the 3,000 who died, many more were left with lifelong health problems.

Langstaff said that "the scale of what happened is horrifying" and said people's suffering had been compounded by repeated denials and false assurances that they had received good treatment.

When victims were told the truth, sometimes years later, this was sometimes done in "insensitive" and "inappropriate" ways.

"What I have found is that disaster was no accident. People put their trust in doctors and the government to keep them safe and that trust was betrayed," Langstaff told reporters.

He recommended that victims now received compensation. The government is expected to announced a package worth about 10 billion pounds (12 billion dollars) on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to express regret when he speaks in parliament later on Monday.

Speaking ahead of the inquiry, a government spokesman said: "This was an appalling tragedy that never should have happened. We are clear that justice needs to be done and swiftly."

Former prime minister Theresa May launched the inquiry -- one of the country's largest -- in 2017.

Campaigners hailed the report as the culmination of a decades-long struggle but noted that it came too late for many of the victims who will never see justice.

Andy Evans, chairman of the Tainted Blood campaign group, described the report as "momentous" and that he felt "validated and vindicated".

"We have been gaslit for generations... Sometimes we felt like we were shouting into the wind during the last 40 years," he told reporters.

Counselling, Essay On Car Crash: Pune Teen Gets Bail With Conditions

The Juvenile Justice Board granted bail to the accused involved in a recent car accident in Pune, said the juvenile accused's advocate, Prashant Patil. The bail comes with several conditions aimed at rehabilitation and awareness.

The conditions include the following: The accused should work with the traffic police of Yerawada for 15 days; the accused should write an essay on the accident; should get treatment from the concerned doctor to help him quit drinking; and should take psychiatric counselling and submit a report.

In the early hours of Sunday, two individuals, including a young woman, lost their lives after a luxury car collided with their motorcycle near Kalyani Nagar in Pune, said police officials.

The victims were identified as Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. The tragic incident occurred at about 3:15 am. The driver of the car, reportedly a minor, has been apprehended.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Vijay Kumar Magar of Pune City Police confirmed that the juvenile has been apprehended and his father and the owner of a bar that served him alcohol have been booked. An FIR has been lodged, and an investigation is underway.

"A bike rider and pillion rider were killed when a speeding car hit them from behind in the Kalyani Nagar area last night. The accused has been arrested, and an FIR has been registered. We are also verifying the certificates to ascertain the accused's age, as he claims to be a minor," stated DCP Magar.

The police have charged the minor with rash and negligent driving and causing harm by endangering life or personal safety under IPC sections 304A, 279, 337, 338, and 427, along with relevant sections of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Act, added the DCP.

The juvenile's father and the bar that served him liquor face charges under Sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act, said the city police in Pune.

According to the FIR, the accident occurred as a group of friends were returning home on their motorcycles after a party at a restaurant in Kalyani Nagar. Opinion: Lok Sabha Elections: Why A 2004-Like Scenario Is Unlikely

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Four of the seven phases of India's general elections have been concluded, covering 380 seats and hundreds of candidates. Voters have sealed the mandates for roughly 70% of the total Lok Sabha seats. Both social and traditional media are abuzz with poll studies and analyses, though a common observation between them all is that the electoral contest, which initially appeared to be a done deal, has proved to be tighter than anticipated, with local factors taking precedence over national issues.

A few analysts claim the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may not come back to power. Some others predict that the party may not be able to touch 272 seats on its own, though with allies it might manage to cross the halfway mark. The slightly lower voter turnout has added to the anxiety, and supporters of both the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the INDIA bloc are perplexed.

Pollsters Enjoy The Spotlight

Those conducting exit polls are having a field day as they are quizzed on social media and in TV interviews. However, given that it is unethical to speak about such details with elections still underway, most such pollsters have refrained from giving numbers. In fact, among them, many are those who give different answers in different interviews, adding to the confusion. A season of speculation and a battle of narratives, and amidst this, both the BJP and the Congress are trying to turn the public sentiment in their favour. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already claimed that the BJP has won 270 seats till Phase 4.

Elections are a lot about mahaul”, that is, the public mood. India has many late deciders (25-30%, according to various surveys), and it's these voters who are swayed the most by the poll discourse.

Why Ground Reports May Be Unreliable

People who believe that the BJP could lose this election often cite the example of 2004, when Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a public favourite, lost the mandate. Almost all exit polls had failed to gauge the public mood back then. If exit polls conducted through scientific techniques can go wrong, ground reports, based on unscientific sampling methods and gathered through ground feedback, can also be misleading. This is because such local reports usually tend to portray elections as ‘pitched battles', with supporters of each camp claiming that victory is theirs. This was seen even in the Madhya Pradesh state elections in 2023, which largely became a one-sided battle in the end.

Read | Why Are Young Voters Staying Away From Elections? What Are Their Concerns?

Let's look at some data. In the 1999 general elections, the BJP won 182 seats with a 24% vote share, while the Congress won 114 with 28% votes. Though the gap between the vote shares of the two was just 4 percentage points (pp), the BJP still managed to form a government with the support of NDA allies.

In the next general elections in 2004, the BJP won 138 seats (-44) with a 22% vote share (-2 pp), while the Congress won 145 (+31) with a 27% vote share (-1 pp). The Congress formed a government with its United Progressive Alliance (UPA) allies, and the BJP was handed a shock defeat despite its ‘India Shining' campaign.

On Victory Margins

In 1999, the BJP's average lead on the seats it won was around 65,000 in terms of votes and 9 pp in terms of vote share. A victory margin of 10 pp is usually considered a close contest as a swing of only 5 pp is enough to reverse the mandate. The BJP victory in 1999 was thus not huge, which is partly why it lost to the Congress in the next general election.

In 2019, the BJP's average winning margin for its victory seats was around 2.32 lakh votes and 20 pp in terms of vote share. A victory margin of 20 pp is considered a one-sided contest as a swing of more than 10 pp is needed to tilt the contest. Can this huge margin be reversed in 2024?

Read | Opinion: Elections 2024: Why Brand Modi Is Unlikely To Fizzle Out Anytime Soon

In the 1984 elections, even though the Congress won 414 seats with an average vote share lead of 22 pp, it lost the subsequent elections in 1989. Notably, what also helped the party in 1984 was the deep sympathy generated after Indira Gandhi's assassination. That waned by the next election, and the Bofors scandal and corruption allegations against the Gandhi family cost it dear.

So, there comes the question: is the political climate in India today similar to 1984 or 2004, or 2019? Well, the answer depends on which side of the fence you are on.
