More Than 20 Pacers: BCCI Desperate To Find Bumrah, Shami Successors
As several senior India players prepare for the Duleep Trophy first round from September 5, one goal is clear from the squad selection process by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI): the need for fast bowlers. India's lead crop, headlined by Jasprit Bumrah and ably supported by Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, may be one of the finest in the world. But with Bumrah frequently rested, Shami yet to regain fitness and Siraj sometimes blowing hot and cold, the BCCI are aiming to develop a crop capable of taking over from the lead act.
The BCCI elected more than 20 pacers across the four squads for the Duleep Trophy. Several of the lot are uncapped at the international level, while some others have barely a few India matches to their name.
"It's a question of identifying the right ones and giving them opportunities to be ready for the Australian trip. There are lots of bowlers who hit 140-150 kph in the IPL. So it is about nurturing and giving them the right exposure," said former India bowling coach Bharat Arun, speaking to The Indian Express.
While the likes of Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep have been tried, none of them have reached even 30 international matches across all formats. Even Arshdeep Singh has not been fancied for the longer format. Arun emphasised the importance of the Duleep Trophy.
"Red ball cricket is something these bowlers must get used to. We have time but we need to prepare by giving them enough overs under their belt.
"Bowling in first-class cricket, you bowl on unresponsive pitches. You have to come out with some guile or you would need to learn how to reverse the ball because of the conditions that exist in our country. I think it helped Siraj and Shami a great deal," Arun added.
Another former India bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, downplayed the importance of performing in the IPL in order to judge a bowler's skill. Notably, the likes of Harshit Rana, Tushar Deshpande, Yash Dayal and Vijaykumar Vyshak are all in the Duleep Trophy lineups, but arguably thanks to their IPL form. Mhambrey took the example of Umran Malik to reiterate his point.
"Umran is a classic case of who has not played enough red-ball cricket. He came to the reckoning through the IPL. That's 24 balls in a game. The amount of pressure of bowling 24 balls is not like the red ball. I feel this (T20) is not a format to judge a prospect," said Mhambrey to The Indian Express.
Full list of fast bowlers and pace-bowling all-rounders selected for Duleep Trophy first round:
Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Khaleel Ahmed, Avesh Khan, Vidwath Kaverappa, Mohammed Siraj, Yash Dayal, Mukesh Kumar, Umran Malik, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Anshul Kamboj, Himanshu Chauhan, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Tushar Deshpande, Aditya Thakare, Akash Sengupta, Navdeep Saini, Mohit Avasthi, Sandeep Warrier, Gaurav Yadav, Shivam Dube, Nitish Reddy

Mumbai Property Dealer Gives Contract To Kill Friend. Then, A Plot Twist
Contract Killing and then a miscalculation leading to a second death - these were what tied an abandoned car found near Mumbai and two missing property dealers, the Maharashtra Police have found. The men in question - property dealers Aamir Khanzada and Sumit Jain - have been missing since August 21. But the police had no clue till the Baleno car was found near Mumbai Pune Expressway two days later.
Deepak Sakore, a senior police officer of Navi Mumbai, said the they found bullet marks, two empty cartridges and blood inside the car.
The breakthrough came when they arrested Vitthal Nakade, who was linked to the contract killer.
Mr Sakore said Vitthal Nakade was a friend of Sumit. Amir Khanzada and Sumit Jain, the police found, were friends and business partners who had fallen out over a land deal. Both were residents of Nerul and were missing since the night of August 21.
"Recently, Sumit Jain, who had incurred massive debts, usurped a plot of land through fraud. Aamir was blackmailing him to get a share. So Sumit hired a contract killer to kill Aamir," he said. It appeared that the entire planning was done by Sumit Jain and Vitthal Nakade in a day or two. The contract killer was given Rs. 50 lakh, the police were told by Nakade.
But then came the big twist. Instead of the body of Aamir Khanzada, the police found the body of Sumit Jain. The big question then became who killed Sumit and the whereabouts of Aamir.
The next big revelation came when the police arrested a few more men connected to Vitthal Nakade.
"On the night of August 21, at 11 pm, Sumit Jain and Vitthal Nakhade had got Aamir Khanzada in the car. They shot Aamir and disposed of his body. Then Sumit got himself shot in the leg - the plan was to make himself incapacitated, so he stays out of suspicion," said Mr Sakore.
What marred the script was an unexpected fight between the two killers. Sumit, unable to get medical help in time, died of excessive bleeding. Nakhade disposed of his body too.
Amir Khanzada's body was found near Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Sumit Jain's body was dumped by the roadside on Pen-Khopoli Road.

Shocking Dashcam Video From Bengaluru Shows Woman Faking Car Accident
In a bizarre incident, a woman was caught on the dashcam of a car faking an accident by falling in front of the moving car on one of the city roads of Bengaluru. The video shows how, after spotting her, the driver slowed down, but she fell onto the car and thereafter tried to attack him. She behaved erratically before leaving the scene.
The video footage was shared by Shonee Kapoor on X on August 29, urging social media users to install dashcams. He warned users who drive, "Put a dashcam. You never know when this happens to you. Especially when it is a lady. If something happens, people will take her side instantly."

The video shows the man driving through Bengaluru when the woman, who was standing in the middle of the road, began to hit the vehicles as they passed by. Despite the driver's attempts to avoid her, she threw herself onto his car. The video has invited speculation on social media that the woman may either be mentally ill, "possessed," or simply trying a trick in order to beg money from drivers.
It notably caught on the dashcam that the woman was standing in the road and deliberately hit the bonnet of the car, faking she was struck. It also revealed from footage that the driver safely drove the vehicle when such unusual behaviour was deliberately carried out by the woman. Further, the video went viral with questions regarding such dangerous acts on busy roads.

"Send Me Rs 500 For Cab": Scammer Poses As Chief Justice, Case Filed
From fake digital arrests to courier fraud, cybercriminals have become crafty. After several instances of fraudsters impersonating policemen, messaging and calling people to dupe them of their hard-earned money, a fake message from the 'CJI', seeking money to book a cab, is now going viral.
According to a screenshot of the post on the microblogging platform X, the impersonator, who claimed to be Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, was stranded at Connaught Place (CP).
"Hello, I am CJI and we have urgent meeting of the collegium and I am stuck at Cannaught Place can you send 5000rs for cab," read the screenshot of the post riddled with spelling and grammatical errors.
"I will return the money once I reach the court," assured the fraudulent message.

The Supreme Court has now taken note of the viral post and filed a complaint of cyber fraud on the instructions of the Chief Justice.
Several cases of cyber fraud have emerged in the recent past where people have lost lakhs of rupees after falling prey to the ingenious digital methods used by criminals.
Recently, the Reserve Bank of India proposed to set up a 'Digital Payments Intelligence Platform', which will have advanced technologies to mitigate payment fraud risks.
According to the annual report released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on May 30, there was a significant surge in the number of financial frauds reported by banks, increasing by 166 per cent year-on-year in the financial year 2023-24 to reach 36,075 cases.
This figure starkly contrasts with the 13,564 cases reported in the previous fiscal year, FY23.

US Woman Handcuffed Son, Allowed Him To Be Mauled By Pitbull: Police
An Ohio woman and her boyfriend have been arrested following a shocking incident in which her 6-year-old son was handcuffed as a form of "corporal punishment" before being attacked by a pit bull, according to police. Angelina Williams, 27, of Cleveland, and her boyfriend, Taylor Marvin-Brown, now face charges of endangering children and obstructing justice.
In a release, the Ashland County Police said, "On Saturday, August 17, 2024, at 5:06 pm the cops received a 911 call for a squad to be sent to 23 Chapel Street, Savannah, Ohio. Dispatchers were told that a Pitbull had bitten a 6-year-old child on the neck and ear. When the squad members and deputies arrived, the child was in serious condition, and Life Flight was called. Deputies identified the mother as Angelina Williams of Cleveland, Ohio, who was living with a family member of Robert Michalski, who was the owner of the house and dog. Robert had left the house with Pitbull prior to deputies arriving."
Detectives and deputies learnt through an investigation that the 6-year-old child had been restrained with handcuffs on his hands and feet when the Pitbull attacked him.
A search warrant was executed at the house where deputies recovered evidence to support the investigation. Also, they found Robert and the Pitbull hiding in a cubbyhole upstairs at the residence. The Pitbull was taken into custody to be housed as a vicious dog.
Angelina Williams and Robert Michalski were taken into custody and taken to jail. Angelina's boyfriend, Taylor Desiree Marvin-Brown, was at the house and assisted with the restraining of the 6-year-old child. She was taken into custody along with Williams and Michalski.
The investigation will continue, and the case will be forwarded to the Ashland County Prosecutor's Office.

Why Trump Is Threatening To Pull Out Of Debate With Kamala Harris
The campaigns of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris clashed on Monday over next month's U.S. presidential debate, with the vice president's team seeking a return to open microphones while her Republican rival threatened to pull out entirely, suggesting the previously agreed-upon ABC network was biased.
"Why would I do the Debate against Kamala Harris on that network?" Trump, who is making his third bid for the White House, wrote in a social media post late Sunday night that also accused the network of bias. "Stay tuned!!!"
Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon said on Monday the vice president's campaign wanted the broadcaster to keep the candidates' microphones on throughout the event, not muted when their opponent was speaking as in the last presidential debate. So-called "hot mics" can help or hurt political candidates, catching off-hand comments that sometimes were not meant for the public.
"The Vice President is ready to deal with Trump's constant lies and interruptions in real-time. Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button," Fallon said in a statement.
Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller said in a statement they had already agreed to the same terms as CNN's June debate, which had muted microphones, adding: "We said no changes to the agreed-upon rules."
But Trump later told reporters that he preferred to have his microphone kept on, adding that he did not like it muted last time and that he was not preparing much for the face-off against his new rival.
"Doesn't matter to me. I'd rather have it, probably, on. But the agreement was that it would be the same as it was last time," Trump said.
"I'm not spending a lot of time on it. I think my whole life I've been preparing for a debate," Trump added. "You can't cram knowledge into your head, for you know, 30 years of knowledge in one week. So, you know, there's a little debate prep, but I've always done it more or less the same way."
Representatives for ABC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Harris secured the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden stepped aside last month, and had said they would do the Sept. 10 debate hosted by ABC News previously agreed to by Biden and Trump.
Biden had pushed for earlier debates, hoping to boost his campaign and cast a brighter light on Trump. But his own halting performance at the June 27 face-off triggered alarm within his party, with him ending his reelection bid weeks later.
Trump had floated another debate hosted by Fox News on Sept. 4, which he later said would be a televised town hall with just himself and host Sean Hannity. The Harris campaign said no.
The vice presidential candidates, Republican U.S. Senator JD Vance and Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, are scheduled to debate Oct. 1 on CBS News.

"Embarrassment": Omar Abdullah's Jibe At BJP Over Seat-Sharing Fumble
National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, shortly after thrashing out what he called a "tough" seat-sharing deal with ally Congress, said he was surprised that the BJP, which prides itself on its discipline, failed to announce its candidates without a hitch.
"For them to have furniture broken in their office and almost a riot like situation was extremely unusual. But then, I'm not surprised. When you suddenly change all your senior leaders, you are going to have a problem," Mr Abdullah said.
The BJP had released a list of 44 candidates for the three-phase election to 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but deleted it and released a list with 15 names -- the candidates for the first phase.
The change followed a massive display of resentment from the local leaders. The list which was deleted, contained names of leaders who had switched over from the Congress, National Conference, PDP and Panthers Party.
"When you reward turncoats, you reward those who have left other parties and come and join you... Look at the embarrassment. I have never seen a situation where the party has had to withdraw its list within 10 minutes and then put out a truncated list," Mr Abdullah said.
About the challenges faced by the INDIA alliance - Congress had to fly in two central leaders, KC Venugopal and Salman Khurshid, at the eleventh hour - Mr Abdullah said both parties were new to it.
Seat sharing, for any party, is not easy, Mr Abdullah said. But for the current National Conference leaders, including himself, a pre-poll seat sharing was a first, he said, pointing out that the last time it happened was in the 1980s.
"This is the first time I have had any negotiations for a seat sharing arrangement, coupled with the fact that we haven't had assembly elections in J&K for 10 years," Mr Abdullah said. "This was never going to be easy, but all credit to the negotiators of the Congress and the National Conference, we reached where we are,' he added.
The two parties cracked the deal late in the evening - hours before the deadline for nominations of the first phase.
The National Conference will contest 51 of the 90 assembly seats, the Congress will contest 32. The parties will have a friendly contest on the five seats they disagreed on, and two seats will be left for the CPM and the Panthers Party.
Jammu and Kashmir, where elections are being held after a decade, is headed for a triangular contest between the BJP, Mehbooba Mufti's People's Democratic Party and the National Conference-Congress alliance.
In 2014, the BJP formed a ruling alliance with the PDP after the election results presented a hung house. But the alliance of the two ideologically mismatched parties was short-lived and Jammu and Kashmir came under President's Rule in 2018.
The big surprise of this election is the participation of the candidates of the banned Jamaat-e-Islami, who are contesting as Independents.
"I think it's an important development," Mr Abdullah said. "An organisation that spent the last 30-plus years telling the people of Kashmir that elections are 'haram', that they should not participate in elections, was talking about Jammu and Kashmir not being a part of India, today is willing to take the same oath on the Constitution of India that mainstream political parties have taken. This is a huge development," he said.
About his own decision to contest the assembly elections, the former Chief Minister said, "I am not getting into the powers of the chief minister and all that... Ultimately, if I believe I am a leader of the National Conference, then I must lead".
From the point of view of the assembly, he said it would be "hypocritical" or "seen as hypocritical" if he were to tell people that "I don't believe in this assembly, but you must vote".
"Whatever the flaws of this assembly, it is still better than what we have now. This assembly may not be the assembly that it was in 2018, but it is still an assembly that will speak for them that will fight for their rights. And also this is an assembly that will bring back the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. We'll make a start from there," he added.
The 54-year-old will contest from Ganderbal.

Bangladeshi Student In Assam Sent Back For Liking Anti-India Post: Sources
A Bangladeshi student at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, has been 'sent back' to her home country on Monday after she allegedly liked an anti-India post on social media, police sources told NDTV.
The student from Bangladesh, who joined NIT Silchar in 2021, was criticised by many for liking an anti-India post on Facebook by a former student who also hails from Bangladesh.
The issue was raised by a former student of Assam University Silchar last week. He shared screenshots of Alphi's social media posts, following which several complaints against her were filed in Silchar and other areas of Assam.
The student was taken to the India-Bangladesh international border in Karimganj on Monday morning, where she crossed the border under adequate security arrangements at around 11 am.
However, NIT Silchar authorities said the student expressed a desire to go back home for a while and had applied for leave on Sunday.
Around 70 students from Bangladesh are studying various disciplines of Silchar NIT.

Non-Bailable Charges Against Kolkata Hospital Ex-Chief In Corruption Case
The First Information Report against Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College - has cleared the decks for his eventual arrest. Ghosh -- who is in the eye of the storm over the rape-murder of a young doctor in the hospital premises - has not been named in the rape-murder case. But the corruption charges against him are non-bailable, meaning once arrested, he will not be out easily.
The corruption case was filed after the Central agency took over the investigation on Saturday on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.
While the initial corruption allegations against him were levelled by former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital Akhtar Ali, the push came after the rape-murder case, which has sparked massive public outrage.
There were questions whether the rape-murder was linked to the alleged corruption at the institution under the stewardship of Sandip Ghosh.
As protests spread over the rape-murder, Akhtar Ali had filed an appeal in High Court, requesting that the Enforcement Directorate investigate the alleged financial misconduct.
The CBI, which carried out a massive, 11-hour search at the home of Sandip Ghosh yesterday, have said they have detected a wealth of evidence.
In his appeal to the High Court, Akhtar Ali has accused Sandip Ghosh of illegal sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste and passing tenders against the commission paid by medicine and medical equipment suppliers. Students were pressured to pay amounts ranging between Rs 5 and 8 lakh to pass exams, he further alleged.
Ghosh has been questioned by the CBI for 10 straight days and has even undergone a polygraph test. He was questioned yesterday about the financial irregularities.

After 11-hour Search At Kolkata Doctor's House, CBI Seizes Documents
After a 13-hour search later at the home of Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital's former Principal Sandip Ghosh, officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation left late this evening with multiple documents. The agency, which is already investigating the August 9 rape-murder of a young doctor at the hospital, has also been tasked with the probe into alleged financial irregularities at the institute that took place under the former principal.
Asked if they have found any concrete evidence, a CBI official, on the way out, said, "Bahut kuch hai (Quite a lot)."
Searches were also conducted at the house of ex-medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth and 13 others in and around Kolkata today.
The CBI's anti-corruption unit also searched the homes and offices of those engaged in supplying materials for the management and care of patients.
There have been multiple corruption allegations against Sandip Ghosh, who has been under the lens of the Central agency over the rape-murder.
On Friday -- days after the state government started an investigation into the corruption allegations -- the Calcutta High Court handed the case to the CBI.
Sandip Ghosh has already taken a polygraph test. Today, it was the turn of the main accused, Sanjay Roy.
Ghosh, meanwhile, was questioned by the CBI again today since 8 am. At least seven CBI officers took part in the questioning, which took place at his home in Beliaghata.
Former medical superintendent and vice principal of the hospital Sanjay Vashisth, and another professor of the forensic-medicine department of the institute, were questioned as well.
In its First Information Report, the CBI has named Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities -- Ma Tara Traders of Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan CafA of 4/1, Belgachia and Khama Louha.
They have been accused under Indian Penal Code sections of 120 B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
A postgraduate woman doctor was raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, leading to massive outrage and nationwide protests by doctors and the civil society.
A Kolkata Police civic volunteer has been arrested for the crime.
The CBI, which took over the case following an order by the High Court, has indicated that the crime scene could have been tampered with, reinforcing the allegations of a cover-up.

UP Man Fined For Driving Car Without Helmet By Noida Police
A man who claims that he has never been to Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district in his car, has been slapped with a fine of Rs 1,000 by Noida police for driving the vehicle without a helmet.
Tushar Saxena initially received a text message informing him about the fine but he ignored it, thinking it to be a mistake. However, things became serious when this was followed by an email and another message. The car owner - who lives in Rampur district, some 200 km from Noida - contacted the traffic police and was told that he was fined for driving his four-wheeler vehicle without a helmet.

Police told him that if he fails to pay the amount then he will have to appear in court.
"The challan was issued on November 9, 2023. If you are violating traffic rules, then it is common to receive a fine but that is not my case. I have never driven my car to the NCR area. And if there's any rule that says we have to wear a helmet inside a car, then the authorities must give this to me in writing," Mr Saxena said.
Mr Saxena said he bought his car in March last year and got the vehicle's registration transferred from Ghaziabad to Rampur.
He has appealed to Noida traffic police to investigate this matter and revoke his fine.
A similar case happened in Jhansi when the city's traffic police fined a man Rs 1,000 for not wearing a helmet while driving his Audi car. Bahadur Singh Parihar, a resident of Jhansi's Nandu colony, approached traffic police officials, but was told they would look into the matter after the ongoing Lok Sabha election is over.
Until then, Mr Parihar wore a bike helmet while driving to avoid more fines.

Why NASA Picked Elon Musk's SpaceX To Bring Back Astronauts From Space
NASA today picked Elon Musk's SpaceX to bring back Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore from space next year. Eighty days ago, the two astronauts arrived at the International Space Station aboard Boeing's Starliner for an 8-day mission. They were forced to extend their stay because of major technical issues with the Boeing capsule.
The astronauts are expected to return in February next year, after spending a total of eight months in orbit, on a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft due to launch next month as part of a routine astronaut rotation mission.
NASA chief Bill Nelson said Starliner's propulsion system is too risky to carry its first crew home. Starliner will undock from the ISS without a crew and attempt to return to Earth as it would have with astronauts aboard.
The space agency's decision to pick Boeing's top space rival marked a fresh setback to the Starliner test mission. Boeing had hoped the mission would redeem the troubled program after years of development problems and over $1.6 billion in budget overruns since 2016.
Nelson said he discussed the agency's decision with Boeing's new CEO Kelly Ortberg.
The SpaceX Crew-9 mission will take off in late September, but carrying only two passengers instead of the originally planned four.
It will remain moored to the ISS until its scheduled return in February, bringing back its own crew members plus their two stranded colleagues.
The veteran NASA astronauts, both former military test pilots, became the first crew to ride Starliner on June 5 when they were launched to the ISS.
Starliner's propulsion system suffered multiple glitches beginning in the first 24 hours of its flight to the ISS, triggering months of cascading delays. Five of its 28 thrusters failed and it sprang several leaks of helium, which is used to pressurise the thrusters.
Since Starliner docked to the ISS in June, Boeing has scrambled to investigate what caused its thruster mishaps and helium leaks. The company arranged tests and simulations on Earth to gather data that it has used to try and convince NASA officials that Starliner is safe to fly the crew back home.
But results from that testing raised more difficult engineering questions and ultimately failed to quell NASA officials' concerns about Starliner's ability to make its crewed return trip - the most daunting and complex part of the test mission.

"History Made Today," Says Zelensky After Meeting PM Modi: 10 Points
- "Following the visit, we also agreed on a joint statement focusing on the development of a strategic partnership, bilateral trade, and continued military-technical cooperation," said the Ukrainian President, whose country is at war with Russia.
- PM Modi's office in the joint India-Ukraine statement said both leaders reiterated their readiness for further cooperation in upholding principles of international law, including the UN Charter, such as respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty of states. "They agreed on the desirability of closer bilateral dialogue in this regard," the joint statement said.
- PM Modi arrived in Kyiv this morning on a special train on the first-ever visit to Ukraine by an Indian Prime Minister after the former Russian state became independent in 1991.
- In his talks with Mr Zelenskyy that took place under the shadow of the conflict, PM Modi said India is ever ready to play an "active role" in every effort to restore peace in Ukraine and he would even like to contribute personally in ending the conflict.
- "We (India) are not neutral. From the very beginning, we have taken sides. And we have chosen the side of peace. We have come from the land of Buddha where there is no place for war," PM Modi said in his opening remarks during the talks. "We have come from the land of Mahatma Gandhi who had given a message of peace to the entire world," he said.
- Both sides agreed to ask the Indian-Ukrainian Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) to explore all possible ways to not only restore bilateral trade and economic relations to pre-conflict levels, but expand and deepen them further.
- There has been a significant reduction in the annual bilateral trade in goods since 2022 due to the challenges related to the ongoing conflict.
- PM Modi also apprised Mr Zelensky of his conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Samarkand in September 2022 and Moscow last month. "Some time back, when I met President Putin in Samarkand, I had told him that this was not the era of war. Last month when I went to Russia, I said in clear words that a solution to any problem is never found on the battlefield," PM Modi said.
- PM Modi's visit to Kyiv is seen in many quarters as a diplomatic balancing act as his trip to Russia triggered anguish among some Western countries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said PM Modi reiterated the need for "practical engagement" between all stakeholders to develop an innovative solution that will help build broad acceptability and contribute towards peace and stability.
- Both sides called for a comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council to reflect contemporary global realities and to make it more representative, effective and efficient in dealing with issues of international peace and security. Ukraine reiterated its support for India's permanent membership of a reformed and expanded UN Security Council.

NASA Spots Mysterious Object Moving In Space At 1 Million Miles Per Hour
Citizen scientists involved in NASA's Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project have made an extraordinary discovery-an enigmatic object hurtling through space at an astonishing speed of 1 million miles per hour.
Volunteers combing through NASA data in search of new planetary bodies or celestial phenomena have found this object and it has been named "CWISE J1249."
Kabatnik, a participant from Nuremberg, Germany, expressed their thrill in a NASA press release: "I can't describe the level of excitement. When I first saw how fast it was moving, I was convinced it must have been reported already."
According to NASA, CWISE J1249 is zooming out of the Milky Way at about 1 million miles per hour. But it also stands out for its low mass, which makes it difficult to classify as a celestial object. It could be a low-mass star, or if it doesn't steadily fuse hydrogen in its core, it would be considered a brown dwarf, putting it somewhere between a gas giant planet and a star.
Ordinary brown dwarfs are not that rare. Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 volunteers have discovered more than 4,000 of them! But none of the others are known to be on their way out of the galaxy.
This new object has yet another unique property. Data obtained with the W. M. Keck Observatory in Maunakea, Hawaii, show that it has much less iron and other metals than other stars and brown dwarfs. This unusual composition suggests that CWISE J1249 is quite old, likely from one of the first generations of stars in our galaxy.
Why does this object move at such high speed? One hypothesis is that CWISE J1249 originally came from a binary system with a white dwarf, which exploded as a supernova when it pulled off too much material from its companion. Another possibility is that it came from a tightly bound cluster of stars called a globular cluster, and a chance meeting with a pair of black holes sent it soaring away.
"When a star encounters a black hole binary, the complex dynamics of this three-body interaction can toss that star right out of the globular cluster," says Kyle Kremer, incoming assistant professor in UC San Diego's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Puja Khedkar's Fraud Not Only Against Us But Public Too: UPSC To Court
The UPSC on Wednesday opposed in the Delhi High Court an anticipatory bail plea by former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, accused of cheating and wrongly availing OBC and disability quota benefits, and said she committed fraud against the commission and the public.
The Delhi Police also sought dismissal of the pre-arrest bail plea on the ground that any relief to her would hinder its probe into the "deep-rooted conspiracy" and that the case has wider implications on public trust as well as the integrity of the civil services examination.
Justice Subramonium Prasad listed the matter for hearing on August 29 and extended the interim protection from arrest granted to Khedkar in the meantime.
In its reply filed in court, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said Khedkar's custodial interrogation was necessary to unearth the magnitude of the "fraud" that could not have been done without the help of other individuals. Therefore, her pre-arrest bail plea should be dismissed, it said.
"The gravity of the fraud committed is unprecedented in nature having been committed against not only a constitutional body -- the complainant -- whose traditions are untrammelled and unparalleled but also against the public at large, including the citizens of this country who have utmost faith upon the credibility of the UPSC as well as persons who could not be appointed despite being duly eligible and qualified due to illegal means employed by the applicant to seek appointment," the reply filed through advocate Vardhman Kaushik said.
The court granted time to Khedkar to respond to the stand of the UPSC as well as the Delhi Police.
Khedkar allegedly misrepresented information in her application for the UPSC Civil Services Examination-2022 to get reservation benefits.
The Delhi Police, in its status report, asserted that the investigation has revealed that she was not entitled to benefits as an "OBC+Non-Creamy Layer" candidate but she hatched a conspiracy with other persons to get that benefit by showing that her parents are divorced.
The circumstances, however, suggest that Khedkar's parents were living together and that she made a false declaration with respect to her previous number of attempts while writing the Civil Services Examination (CSE)-2021 under a changed name, the agency said.
"She had already exhausted all the permissible attempts available to a PwBD (Persons with Benchmark Disabilities)+OBC candidate, i.e. 9 attempts by CSE-2020 itself. Therefore, as per CSE Rules, she was not eligible to appear further for CSE-2021 and subsequent CSEs," police said in its status report..
"However, despite exhausting all the permissible attempts she appeared in CSE-2021, CSE- 2022 and CSP-2023 by intentionally changing her name and making incorrect or false statements regarding the number of attempts already availed and suppressing material information which she was duty bound to furnish true and correct," the report stated.
The report stated that while Khedkar claimed no connection with her father and showed her mother's income as being below the threshold to get the benefit of "OBC+Non-Creamy Layer" candidate, her family owns 12 vehicles, including a Mercedes car, BMW car and a Thar SUV.
It stated the family owns "23 pieces of immovable properties valued crores of rupees" in different locations in Maharashtra.
The Delhi Police informed that there are some ongoing inquiries, such as verifying the authenticity of her disability certificates and educational claims. If granted anticipatory bail, she may obstruct this process, create a "consistent narrative" with those involved, "cover up their tracks" and manipulate evidence, they said. "Petitioner alone could not have managed to make such manipulations. There is certainly a deep-rooted conspiracy which is required to be unearthed. It is a matter of investigation to find as to who all and how many persons are involved in such a big fraud where manipulation of details has been done with a premier institute like UPSC," it said.
"There are serious charges involving deception and fraud against the petitioner.. The case has wider implications on public trust, and it directly impacts the fairness and integrity of the entire examination and selection process," the police said.
The UPSC, in its response, also said if Khedkar is granted anticipatory bail, it would impede the investigation which is at a "crucial stage" and also "embolden the spirit" of individuals who intend to play foul and abuse the law.
It said there was a need to safeguard the constitutional body tasked with the responsibility of the "glorious tradition" of recruitment to India's most premier service.
"The fact that the accused is at an advantageous position to be in cahoots with other individuals even before her selection as a Civil Service Officer, speaks volumes about the kind of influence she has and been able to yield even without being a part of the system," UPSC's reply stated.
Earlier this month, the court had granted Khedkar interim protection from arrest.
Last month, the UPSC had initiated a series of actions against Khedkar, including registration of criminal case against her for availing attempts in the civil services exam by faking identity.
The Delhi Police has registered an FIR under provisions of the Indian Penal Code, Information Technology Act and Right of Persons with Disability Act.
On July 31, the UPSC cancelled Khedkar's candidature and debarred her from future exams.

After Neeraj Chopra Silver, Another India Javelin Star Eyes World Record
Tokyo Paralympics gold medalist Indian javelin thrower Sumit Antil wants to improve upon his world record in his bid to defend his title in the Men's F64 category at the Paris Paralympics Games. Sumit, along with Bhagyashree Jadhav (shot put, F34 category) will be Indian flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Paralympics Games to be held from August 28 to September 8, 2024. He had set a world record thrice in the Tokyo Paralympics and won the gold medal with the best throw of 68.55 metres.
He bettered it with a new world record throw of 70.83 meters at the 2023 Para World Championships and further improved it at the Hangzhou Para Asian Games (2023) to win the gold with an effort of 73.29 metres.
F64 category deals with problems in Lower limb/s. Athletes compete with prosthesis affected by limb deficiency and leg length difference "My long-term goal is to achieve a distance of 80 meters but in the Paris Paralympics, I will try to win the gold medal with a effort of 75 meters," the 26-year-old told PTI-Bhasha in an exclusive interview.
The athlete, who lost one of his limbs in a road accident in 2015, won the gold medal at the Para World Championship in May this year with an effort of 69.50 metres.
Sumit said: "My throws during practice have been quite consistent. I have worked hard on increasing strength without changing my technique. I will try to improve my previous record." When asked about the pressure of being defending champion and being the Indian flag bearer, he said, "There is no pressure right now but things will be known after reaching Paris. Once you reach the Games village or at competition venue, things become a little different. I will try to do my best without taking pressure." "I want to enjoy this moment. For the first time, such a large and strong contingent from India is going to the Paralympics and I feel proud to be the flag bearer," he added.
The Indian contingent comprises 84 athletes across 12 disciplines for the Paralympics .
This Padma Shri awardee said, "Being a flag bearer in an event like Paralympics is a different kind of emotion. This is the first time I will be a part of the opening ceremony of the Paralympics.
"At the time of the Tokyo Paralympics, there were a lot of restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. I reached late there according to the schedule of my competition." Sumit said that after the Tokyo Paralympics, he focused more on practicing instead of participating in different competitions.
He said, "I have participated in very limited competitions. I have spent more time in practice. Competitions keep going on but my aim is to get a medal for India in the Paralympics and my entire focus has been on this for the last three years." He said, "I prefer to practice in India only rather than abroad. I went to Finland in 2018 but I did not feel much improvement there. I practice at SAI (Sports Authority of India) Sonipat centre, which is equipped with a track for Javelin throw and world-class facilities." When Sumit was asked whether he too was a little disappointed with Neeraj Chopra's silver medal in the Olympics, he said, "Neeraj Bhai performed very well. It would be wrong to say that we were heartbroken by his effort. A lot depends on the day at this level of competition. It wasn't our day in Tokyo. It was Arshad Nadeem's ( Gold medal winner) day in Paris." He said, "I am very happy with Neeraj's performance. It is difficult to deliver your season's best performance under pressure on a stage like the Olympics. I think once he crosses the 90m mark, we will have a lot of gold medals." Sumit said that he has been a part of Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS) since 2019 and he is getting all kinds of help from it.
"I have been a part of the TOPS scheme since 2019 and since that time I have been getting prosthetic legs from abroad. Along with my prosthetics, TOPS provides everything I need for my game," he concluded.

Dawood's Daughter's Gown And A Kidnapping: A Fresh Look At MP Underworld
A new book by a retired IPS officer claims to reveal the chilling connection between the bridal gown of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's daughter and a high-profile kidnapping case in Indore in 2005. The book by Dr Shailendra Srivastava, titled "Shackle The Storm", threads together the details of how the seemingly unrelated events are linked, shedding light on a dark chapter of Madhya Pradesh's criminal history.
The story begins with the bridal gown worn by Dawood's daughter, Mahrukh, during her wedding in Mecca in July 2005. The gown was crafted by a tailor named Ismail Khan, a resident of Shivpuri district in Madhya Pradesh.
Barely a month later, on August 17, 2005, Nitesh Nagori, the 20-year-old son of a prominent cement manufacturer in Indore, was kidnapped. A ransom of Rs 4 crore was sought for him. The police caught some of the accused and managed to release him before the ransom was paid.
Investigation indicated that Ismail Khan was involved in the abduction.
Ismail Khan was closely associated with Aftab Alam, one of Dawood Ibrahim's trusted lieutenants. Dawood Ibrahim was to get a share of the ransom.
The police believe that Ismail, who had fled after the kidnapping, was promised a lucrative commission and a job in Dubai for his role in the crime, along with Rs 1 crore for stitching the gown.
Ismail and Aftab have both been on the run since the incident, evading capture for nearly two decades.
In September 2005, the police arrested Nitesh Nagori's friend Dhruv, and another associate, Gaurav, for allegedly assisting Ismail in the kidnapping.
During interrogation, Dhruv identified Ismail as the mastermind, leading the police to unravel the connection between Ismail and the infamous underworld network.
The investigation also revealed that Aftab Alam, who had escaped Mumbai in 1997, was operating from the Gulf during the kidnapping.
Aftab's involvement complicated the case. The Interpol was alerted and warrants issued for the arrest of Ismail, Aftab, and other suspects, including Randhawa and Ibrahim, who are on the run.
Dr Srivastava's book goes beyond the kidnapping case to delve into the underworld's operations in Madhya Pradesh, particularly the covert activities of Dawood Ibrahim and his notorious rival, Chhota Rajan.
The narrative reveals a previously untold story of Vicky Malhotra, a key member of Chhota Rajan gang, who was arrested after inadvertently alerting the Mumbai Police by using a phone number linked to a previous ransom threat in Indore.
Malhotra, whose real name is Vijay Kumar Yadav, provided an in-depth account of his life in the underworld, including his involvement in multiple assassination attempts on Dawood Ibrahim. The book uncovers chilling details, such as a failed attempt to target Dawood during his daughter's burial in Karachi and another botched plan in Dubai.
One of the most intriguing stories in the book is the transformation of Vijay Yadav into Vicky Malhotra, a feared don in Chhota Rajan's gang.
Dr. Srivastava explores how this petty thief from Murshidabad rose to prominence in the underworld and came close to assassinating Dawood Ibrahim on three occasions.
Shackle The Storm is more than just a crime thriller; it is a compilation of 14 gripping stories that traverse the murky world of crime, justice, and the underworld in Madhya Pradesh.
The book also recounts Dr Srivastava's experience as the IG of Indore Range during the 2006 Bhojshala riots, where he played a crucial role in managing communal tensions and exposing the activities of the banned terrorist organization SIMI.
As Dr Srivastava reveals, these stories are not just about crime but also about the courage of those who stand against it, offering readers a glimpse into the untold tales of Madhya Pradesh's fight against terrorism and the underworld.

Gita Gopinath On What India Needs To Do To Become Developed Nation By 2047
Gita Gopinath of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called for more investments in health and public infrastructure in India and a workforce that's way more skilled.
Ms Gopinath, First Deputy Managing Director at IMF and professor at Harvard University, pointed out what India needs to do to become a developed nation while speaking at Delhi School of Economics.
"India is the fastest growing economy among the major economies. The question is how to keep up the momentum in the long run," she said at DSE's Diamond Jubilee Conference.
The top IMF economist said that India needs a workforce that's "much more skilled and much more educated". This is absolutely critical to take India towards a high-income economy, she added.
She also called for more investments in public infrastructure - in which she said there's a gap - and institutional measures to support high growth in the long run. Ease of Doing Business, efficiency of the judicial system and land Reforms are absolutely critical.
Flexibility in labour markets, which includes the implementation of labour codes, keeping trade open, and more investments in health are also
She also called for an increase in women's labour force participation.
Earlier in the day, she told NDTV that climate change posed a downward risk to the Indian economic outlook and called for "a lot of action" by the country.
She said while India has done "extremely well" in terms of headline growth, the employment growth here has been lower than 2%.
"India's growth has been capital intensive, but hiring workers has been much less. India needs more investment in human capital and skilling workers. Jobs between 60-148 million need to be created between now and 2030," she told NDTV.

Musk's X Ordered To Pay Rs 5 Crore To Former Employee Over Unfair Dismissal
Elon Musk's microblogging site X has been ordered to pay compensation to a former employee in an unfair dismissal case. According to Fortune, the social media platform, formerly known as Twitter, was ordered to pay over $602,640 (approximately Rs 5 crore) to Gary Rooney, who was fired in December 2022 after Mr Musk's takeover of the company. Mr Rooney held a senior procurement role at the time of his dismissal. He had been employed by X since September 2013.
On Tuesday, Ireland's Workplace Relations Commission held Mr Rooney had been unfairly dismissed in 2022 and ordered X to pay him a huge amount - the largest sum the agency has ever awarded, per the outlet.
In November 2022, shortly after Mr Musk's takeover of X, the billionaire sent a company-wide email demanding employees commit to working "long hours at high intensity" or receive a big payout. Employees, including Mr Rooney, were given a day to click "yes" on the email to accept the new working conditions.
The Commission heard that X maintained that the employee had resigned voluntarily after he failed to tick a box committing to new unspecified working arrangements in an email from the company's new owner Elon Musk.
Also Read | Bill Gates Escaped Tightly Scheduled Life By Visiting Warren Buffett, Reveals New Book
However, the Irish Workplace Relations Commission refused to buy this argument and ruled that not clicking "yes" in response to the email did not constitute an act of resignation. "It is not OK for Mr. Musk, or indeed any large company to treat employees in such a manner in this country or jurisdiction. The record award reflects the seriousness and the gravity of the case," the complainant's solicitor Barry Kenny said, per the outlet.
Meanwhile, this is one of the cases that sprung up since Mr Musk purchased the micro-blogging site. Multiple lawsuits have already alleged that X employees did not receive their promised severance benefits.
Elon Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 in a $44 billion deal. He laid off almost half the employees shortly after his takeover of the company and sent a hardcore ultimatum to the remaining staff.

ISRO Successfully Places Earth Observation Satellite Into Orbit
ISRO today successfully placed an Earth observation and SR-O DEMOSAT satellites into intended orbit. The space agency launched its third and final developmental flight, Small Satellite Launch Vehicle-D3, carrying Earth Observation Satellite EOS-08.
The rocket lifted off majestically from the first launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here, situated about 135 km east of Chennai at a pre-fixed time of 9.17 am.
The objectives of the SSLV-D3-EOS-08 mission include designing and developing a microsatellite and creating payload instruments compatible with the microsatellite bus, the Bengaluru-headquartered national space agency said.
Built on the Microsat/IMS-1 bus, EOS-08 carries three payloads--Electro Optical Infrared Payload (EOIR), Global Navigation Satellite System-Reflectometry payload (GNSS-R) and SiC UV Dosimeter.
The EOIR payload is designed to capture images in the Mid-Wave IR (MIR) and Long-Wave IR (LWIR) bands, both during the day and night, for applications such as satellite-based surveillance, disaster monitoring, environmental monitoring, fire detection, volcanic activity observation and industrial and power plant disaster monitoring.
The GNSS-R payload demonstrates the capability of using GNSS-R-based remote sensing for applications such as ocean surface wind analysis, soil moisture assessment, cryosphere studies over the Himalayan region, flood detection, and inland waterbody detection.
The SiC UV Dosimeter monitors UV irradiance at the viewport of the Crew Module in the Gaganyaan Mission and serves as a high-dose alarm sensor for gamma radiation.

"Took Advantage Of His Addiction": 5 Charged Over Matthew Perry's Death
US prosecutors said Thursday they have charged five people, including two doctors, over the death of "Friends" star Matthew Perry, who died at his Los Angeles home last year after years of struggling with addiction.
"These defendants took advantage of Mr Perry's addiction issues to enrich themselves. They knew what they were doing was wrong. They knew what they were doing was risking great danger to Mr Perry, but they did it anyway," said US Attorney Martin Estrada.
The five include two doctors and the actor's assistant.
"In the end, these defendants were more interested in profiting off Mr Perry than caring for his well-being."
One of the doctors, Salvador Plasencia, faces up to 120 years in federal prison, Estrada said.
Matthew Perry, who played the character Chandler Bing on the hit TV sitcom from 1994-2004, was found unresponsive in his swimming pool in October last year at the age of 54, sparking a global outpouring of grief from fans and colleagues.
An autopsy found the cause of his death was "the acute effects of ketamine," a controlled drug which the recovering addict was understood to be taking as part of supervised therapy.
While only small amounts were found in his stomach, a high level was detected in his bloodstream.
Just how the actor -- who had reportedly not had a supervised infusion session for several days -- obtained the drug became the subject of a legal investigation, with Los Angeles police confirming in May that they were probing the death.
Doctors and veterinarians often employ ketamine as an anesthetic, and researchers have explored its use as a treatment for depression. Underground users take it illicitly for its hallucinogenic effects.
"Friends," which followed the lives of six New Yorkers navigating adulthood, dating and careers, drew a massive global following and made megastars of previously unknown actors who became a fixture in the lives of millions of viewers.
One of the biggest draws was Matthew Perry's Chandler character, a sarcastic 20-something-year-old who resisted growing up.
Matthew Perry's comic talent brought him fabulous wealth, but hid a darkness that left him struggling with addiction to painkillers and alcohol.
In 2018 he suffered a burst colon, related to drug usage, and underwent multiple surgeries.
In his memoir "Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing," published in 2022, Matthew Perry described going through detox dozens of times. He dedicated the book to "all of the sufferers out there," and wrote in the prologue: "I should be dead."
"I have mostly been sober since 2001," he wrote, "save for about sixty or seventy little mishaps over the years."
His sudden death last year drew shocked reactions from Hollywood A-listers, his costars, and "Friends" fans worldwide.
"Oh boy this one has cut deep," said Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel on the show.

Vinesh Phogat's Petition For Silver In Olympics 2024 Dismissed
Wrestler Vinesh Phogat's petition for joint silver medal in Olympics 2024 has been dismissed by Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The operative part of the order is out, while the detailed order will come later. "The application filed by VInesh Phogat on 7 August 2024 is dismissed," the CAS said in its initial order on Wednesday. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified on the morning of the women's 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for exceeding the weight limit. During the weigh-in, she was found to be 100 grams over the limit.
Following her disqualification, Phogat requested CAS, an international body established in 1984 to settle disputes related to sport through arbitration, on August 7 to award her a joint silver medal.
After the plea was rejected, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment at the decision of the Sole Arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to dismiss wrestler Vinesh Phogat's application against the United World Wrestling (UWW) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"The operative part of the August 14 decision, which dismisses Vinesh's application to be awarded a shared silver medal women's 50 kg category at the Paris Olympic Games 2024, has significant implications for her in particular and the sporting community at large," the IOA said in a statement.
"The marginal discrepancy of a 100 grams and the resultant consequences has profound impact, not only in terms of Vinesh's career but also raises serious questions about ambiguous rules and their interpretation"
The IOA added that a 'deeper examination' is needed and added that it was exploring more legal options.
"The IOA firmly believes that the total disqualification of an athlete for such a weight infraction on the second of two days warrants a deeper examination. Our legal representatives had duly brought this out in their submissions before the Sole Arbitrator," the IOA said in its release.
"The matter involving Vinesh highlights the stringent and, arguably, inhumane regulations that fail to account for the physiological and psychological stresses athletes, particularly female athletes, undergo. It is a stark reminder of the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes' well-being."
The IOA further said that it would provide any possible assistance to Vinesh going forward.
"In light of the order of the CAS, the IOA continues to stand in full support of Ms. Phogat and is exploring further legal options. The IOA is committed to ensuring that Vinesh's case is heard. It will continue to advocate justice and fairness in sports, ensuring that the rights and dignity of athletes and everyone in the sports fold are upheld at all times." the IOA said. "We appreciate the continued support and understanding of our stakeholders, athletes, and the public."

Mahindra Thar Roxx SUV Launched In India; Prices Start At Rs. 12.99 Lakh
The Mahindra Thar Roxx 5-door SUV has been officially revealed by Mahindra. It is one of the most anticipated car launches of 2024 and takes the story forward, four years after the new-generation Thar 3-door SUV was showcased on August 15, 2020, four years ago. The Thar Roxx (yet to get used to the name) aims to draw potential customers with its robust appeal, enhanced practicality and a significantly longer list of features compared to the Thar 3-door. The base petrol model is priced at Rs. 12.99 lakh and the base diesel model is priced at Rs. 13.99 lakh. Prices for the mid and top-spec variants will be revealed tomorrow.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Design

it is evident that Mahindra has changed things much further away from how the audience expected them to be. The rear quarter glass is triangular to accommodate a thicker B-pillar. While it looks quite appalling on the hard-top trim, it could give the Thar Roxx a seductive silhouette when it plans to go topless. Also, the Thar Roxx features a slanted roof, which is inviting not-so-pleasing opinions on the internet. The design for the alloy wheel is fresh, as opposed to the three-door model. In addition, the circular rear wheel arches of the outgoing model are now replaced with squarish wheel arches.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Engine Options

The Thar Roxx is just a couple of days away from its official launch. But it seems like Autocar India has their hands on some official Thar documents, which reveal the SUV's specifications. They report that the Mahindra Thar Roxx will get two engine choices - 2.0L turbo-petrol and 2.2L turbo-diesel. The petrol will be offered in two guises - 160 Hp and 170 Hp. The oil burner too, will be sold in two states of tunes - 132 Hp and 171hp. Also, there will be two transmission choices - 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT.
Mahindra Thar Roxx Off-Road Equipment

The 5-door iteration of the Thar will come equipped with a more advanced suspension setup than the outgoing 3-door model. It will utilise Scorpio-N-derived FSD shock absorbers with a penta-link suspension setup on the rear. Also, it will feature an electronic brake-locking differential on the front and a mechanically locking rear differential. Moreover, there will be a low-ratio transfer case with a lever, just like the Thar 3-door. The list will include an offroad crawl control and an intelli-turn assist feature. As for the numbers, the breakover angle now stands at 23.6 degrees, the approach angle at 41.3 degrees, and 36.1 degrees of departure angle. Also, it will have a water-wading depth of 650 mm.
In theory, it will go up against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Jimny, but there is no direct rival to the Thar Roxx, which stands in a segment of its own.

Ukraine Offers To Stop Incursion If Russia Accepts "Just Peace"
Ukraine said Tuesday it would not hold on to Russian territory captured in its surprise cross-border incursion and offered to stop raids if Moscow agreed a "just peace".
Ukrainian forces entered Russia's Kursk region last Tuesday, taking over two dozen settlements in the biggest attack by a foreign army on Russian soil since World War II. Russia said Tuesday it had fended off new attacks in Kursk.
More than 120,000 people have fled the area and Ukraine's military chief Oleksandr Syrsky said Monday that his troops controlled about 1,000 square kilometres of Russian territory.
At least 800 square kilometres was under Ukrainian control as of Monday, according to an AFP analysis of data from the US-based Institute for the Study of War.
Foreign ministry spokesman Georgiy Tykhy on Tuesday said Kyiv was not interested in "taking over" Russian territory and defended Ukraine's actions as "absolutely legitimate".
"The sooner Russia agrees to restore a just peace... the sooner the raids by the Ukrainian defences forces into Russia will stop," he told reporters.
Ukraine meanwhile said it was imposing movement restrictions in a 20-kilometre zone in Sumy region along the border with Kursk region due to an "increase in the intensity of hostilities" and "sabotage" activities.
Russia's defence ministry said it had "foiled" new Ukrainian attacks in Kursk by "enemy mobile groups in armoured vehicles to break through deep into Russian territory".
Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia's FSB security service, also said in a statement that Ukraine had carried out the attack "with the support of the collective West".
'I saw a lot of death'
Since launching its invasion in February 2022, Russia has captured territory in southern and eastern Ukraine and subjected Ukrainian cities to missile and drone barrages.
Ukraine's offensive was the biggest cross-border action since the invasion and it caught Russia off guard.
"They didn't protect the border," a Ukrainian serviceman who took part in the offensive and identified himself as Ruzhyk told AFP in Sumy region.
"They only had anti-personnel mines scattered around trees at the side of the road and a few mines that they managed to quickly throw along the highways," he said.
A 27-year-old squad leader, who identified himself as Faraon, was sparing but direct in his description of battles in Kursk.
"I saw a lot of death in the first few days. It was terrifying at first but then we got used to it," he told AFP.
"There have been many deaths," he repeated stood next to a forest road leading to the frontier, without elaborating.
Ukrainian military analyst Mykola Bielieskov told AFP: "Russian complacency prevailed".
"Russia assumed that since it had initiative elsewhere, Ukraine wouldn't dare to do things we've seen," he said, referring to months of Russian advances along the front.
ISW figures also showed that Russian troops had captured 1,360 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory since the start of 2024.
'Sow discord'
Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to "dislodge" Ukrainian troops.
Putin told a televised meeting with officials on Monday that "one of the obvious goals of the enemy is to sow discord" and "destroy the unity and cohesion of Russian society".
Putin also said Ukraine wanted to "improve its negotiating position" for any future talks with Moscow.
Regional governor Alexei Smirnov told the same meeting that Ukrainian forces had entered at least 12 kilometres into the region and the new front was now 40 kilometres wide.
Russia had conceded earlier that Ukrainian forces had penetrated up to 30 kilometres (20 miles) into Russian territory in places.
A Ukrainian security official told AFP, on condition of anonymity, at the weekend, that Ukraine sought to "stretch the positions of the enemy, to inflict maximum losses and to destabilise the situation in Russia as they are unable to protect their own border".
The Ukrainian official said thousands of Ukrainian troops were involved in the operation.

'Spectacles Shattered, Glass In Eyes': Autopsy Report Of Kolkata Doctor
More chilling details have emerged in the rape and murder of the trainee doctor in Kolkata, with the post-mortem report indicating that the accused had hit her so hard that the glasses of her spectacles shattered, shards piercing her eyes.
The 31-year-old post-graduate trainee, who was working at the city's renowned state government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was raped and murdered inside a seminar hall in the institution and her body was found on Friday morning. Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer working with the Kolkata Police, has been arrested for the crime.
The post-mortem report, which was handed over to the family of the trainee doctor by the Kolkata Police on Monday, revealed that she had suffered several injuries. Cuts were found on her hands and face.
The report states that shards of glass from the spectacles likely caused the eye injuries that were found on her body.
"Homicidal injuries are antemortem in nature with indication of sexual penetration," the report stated. This means that the wounds were inflicted on the trainee doctor while she was still alive and injuries on her private parts indicated that she was raped.
After savagely hurting and sexually assaulting her, the accused killed the trainee doctor by throttling and smothering her. The report estimates the time of death to be between 3 and 5 am on Friday.
The police have said that after the murder, Sanjoy Roy - who was not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but frequented it - went home and slept in late. Officials told news agency PTI that he washed the clothes he was wearing to destroy evidence and that his shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search.
Protests
The horrific crime has sparked widespread protests and doctors in several cities, including Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata, have said all elective services will be halted till the investigation into the case is complete.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday set a deadline for the Kolkata Police to solve the case, warning that the investigation will be handed over to the CBI if other accused, if any, are not arrested by then.
"If there are more accused... and all are not arrested by Sunday... we will hand over the case to the CBI, even though their success rate is low," the chief minister said after meeting the victim's family.
The Kolkata Police had said they are certain any other culprits would be arrested in the next four to five days.
"We are in touch with family members. We will stay in touch and share progress with them. If, even after that, the family is not satisfied then whatever madam (Chief Minister Banerjee) has said will happen," Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said.

Top College Posting For Kolkata Principal Who Quit Over Doctor Rape-Murder
A health ministry official, Suhrita Paul, will replace Sandip Ghosh as the Principal of RG Kar Medical College. Mr Ghosh -- who said he was stepping down from the post and the government job following the rape-murder of the 31-year-old doctor -- has been appointed the principal of the Calcutta Medical College, the city's top teaching hospital. Ajay Kumar Ray, who was heading the institution, has been transferred to the health ministry.
The rapid changes were set in motion in after the rape-murder, which has triggered a storm not just in the state, but medical establishments across the country. Cutting across cities, doctors are declaring strike to show solidarity with the protesting students of RG Kar Medical College and demanding speedy justice.
Announcing his resignation this morning, Sandip Ghosh had claimed his decision followed the wishes of the medical students and junior doctors at RG Kar, and the public.
"For the last few days, my family and I have been subjected to various adverse comments. So I have decided to resign," he had said, claiming that he was being a victim of political conspiracy. "I have never been part of any kind of political game," he said.
"I am getting defamed on social media...The deceased doctor was like my daughter. As a parent, I resign...I don't like that this should happen to anyone in future," he had told reporters as he left the hospital.
The outcry against him - started after Friday's rape-murder -- had intensified after he questioned why the second-year postgrad had gone to an empty seminar room alone at night - a comment that was seen as victim-shaming.
The hospital has no on-call room and the woman had gone to the room after dinner to study. Apparently she had dropped off to sleep there.
Her partially clothed body, bearing multiple injuries, was found there the next morning.
The prime suspect is Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police who was stationed at the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments. He was arrested on basis of CCTV footage that showed him entering the building where the doctor was found murdered. A Bluetooth headset found next to the victim's body was seen on his neck in the CCTV footage. It was found to be paired with his phone as well.
Local media has reported that Roy admitted to the crime soon after police started questioning him. "Hang me if you want," he had told the police nonchalantly, the reports said.
The preliminary postmortem reports, however, indicate the rape and murder may not be the handiwork of a single person. The police are not ruling out the involvement of more people.

Accused Washed His Clothes After Raping, Killing Kolkata Doctor: Cops
The man who was arrested on the charge of raping and murdering a doctor inside a Kolkata hospital returned to his place and went to sleep before washing his clothes the next morning to destroy evidence, a police officer probing the case claimed.
The police, however, found marks of blood on the shoe of the accused, a civic volunteer who is not associated with the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, but used to frequent the place.
The body of a woman post-graduate trainee who was allegedly raped and murdered inside a seminar hall of the hospital, was found on Friday morning. The civic volunteer was arrested on Saturday.
Protests by junior doctors demanding quick punishment of those responsible for the crime continued for the third day on Sunday, affecting services in government hospitals across West Bengal.
City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the medical establishment on Sunday for the second time in three days and held a meeting with representatives of agitating junior doctors.
He claimed the probe is "transparent" and urged people not to spread rumours.
"After committing the crime, the accused went back to the place where he was staying and slept till late on Friday morning. After waking up, he washed the clothes he was wearing during the crime to destroy evidence. His shoes, with blood stains on them, were found during a search," the officer said.
Asked if anyone else was involved in the crime as alleged by some quarters, he said, "As of now there is no evidence of that." The officer said that the police were waiting for the final post-mortem examination report as they wanted to match it with their probe findings.
The initial autopsy report stated that the victim was bleeding from her eyes, mouth and private parts. There were also injuries on her left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger and lips.
Another police officer said that circumstantial evidence also indicated a possibility that the doctor was first murdered and then raped.
"We are also talking to persons who were on duty on Thursday night till the next morning. CCTV footage is also being checked," the police officer said.
A team of police officers of the SIT, along with the forensic unit on Sunday, collected samples from the seminar hall of the hospital, a police source said.
The police also reconstructed the crime scene though the arrested accused was not present, the officer said.
"The autopsy report has been handed over to the parents of the deceased doctor today by one of our senior officers. We had a fruitful meeting with the students and we think they are satisfied. As per their demand, we have removed one assistant police officer who was posted here," the police commissioner said.
Goyal said the police are not trying to hide anyone, and the investigation is transparent.
The IPS officer said that they would soon start a toll-free number for the people to come up with suggestions or complaints.
The agitating junior doctors, however, said that they would continue their demonstration till they were totally "satisfied" and their demands regarding their safety and security were addressed.
The cease work in all emergency and non-emergency services will continue but there, one junior doctor said after the meeting with Goyal.
Junior doctors, house staff and post-graduate trainees (PGT) at various state-run hospitals, who are also demanding security for them in medical establishments, began a cease work since Friday evening. "The government must take significant steps to secure justice for the victim. The incident is not only a reflection of systemic failures at the hospital level, but it also points toward broader societal issues that demand immediate and focused attention," he said.
In the wake of the agitation, the state health department on Sunday cancelled offs and holidays of all senior doctors to tackle the stalemate.
Support for the agitating doctors came from different corners of the country.
The Federation of Resident Doctors' Association of India (FORDA) has supported the ongoing strike and called for a nationwide halt of elective services in hospitals on Monday.
The FORDA has informed the Union Health Ministry about their decision.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vowed to seek death penalty for the perpetrator.
Meanwhile, Kolkata Police deployed a huge contingent at the hospital on Sunday.
"No one will be allowed inside the hospital premises without proper identification. We will ensure total safety of the health workers in the medical establishment," the officer said.
The hospital authorities expelled the two security persons contractually employed at the emergency ward for not discharging their duties properly which, in a way, led to the crime against the doctor, another official said.
