"No Rift": Congress After Kerala Meeting Amid Shashi Tharoor Row

Signalling an end to the row over Thiruvanathapuram MP Shashi Tharoor's 'praise' for the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front government in Kerala, the state Congress unit has dismissed reports of a rift and asserted that the party is united.

The statement was made, with Mr Tharoor by her side, on Friday by Congress' Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi after the party brass held a long brainstorming meeting with leaders from the state unit ahead of the Assembly elections in the state next year.

The meeting came a day after the four-time Thiruvanathapuram MP and former Union minister slammed sections of the media for interpreting his statement that he had multiple "options to spend my time" to mean that he had political options apart from the Congress.

Speaking to NDTV after the meeting, Ms Dasmunshi said, "What Shashi Tharoor ji has clarified has been done in a very straight manner and there is no confusion on that. I don't know why you all always take Shashi Tharoor's name... It has been told generally to everyone that action will be taken against anyone crossing the party line and saying something that goes against the party."

"Because there is a controversy by the media and by the translation of what he said... I will say there is no one in the Kerala unit of the party who is pro-Left Democratic Front (LDF) or pro-BJP. Everyone is fighting against (them) and fighting unitedly," she added.

A similar message was also given by senior party leader Ramesh Chennithala. "Everybody will be united and fight for the people of Kerala as the state government has failed on all fronts. We will fight and a (Congress-led) United Democratic front will come to power in 2026," he said.

Apart from leaders from Kerala, including Mr Tharoor and state Congress chief K Sudhakaran, the brainstorming meeting - which went on for nearly three hours - was also attended by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, General Secretary KC Venugopal, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi.

In a post on X, Mr Kharge shared photos and videos from the meeting and said that the people of Kerala will defeat both the "oppressive and communal" fronts in the state.

"Change is inevitable in Kerala. Congress has built the development paradigm and welfare model of Kerala, and we will do everything possible to bring our UDF to power. Next year, people will defeat both the oppressive and communal fronts in the state. We held a meeting of @INCKerala leaders where we deliberated on our political strategy and the future of the state," he wrote.

Sparking Controversy

Earlier this month, Mr Tharoor came under fire from some Congress leaders for praising PM Narendra Modi's visit to the US, where he met President Donald Trump, saying it had led to some positive outcomes for Indians.

He then wrote an article in an English daily in which he was seen as praising the performance of the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in some sectors. While some in the Congress slammed the remarks, Chief Minister Vijayan said they were proof of his government's achievements.

Defending his remarks on PM Modi, Mr Tharoor had said that he could not "always speak in terms of party interest". On the article, the MP said he was focusing on the startup sector in Kerala, the seeds for which were sown by the Congress-led government under Oommen Chandy.

"As a Member of Parliament from Kerala, I wrote this article focusing on a specific issue -- the transformation of the industrial landscape through the growth of the startup sector. As a Congress worker, I take pride in acknowledging that it was former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy who initiated this change," he said.

Pune Rape Accused, Who Is On The Run, Posed As Cop For Months: Sources

Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, the Pune rape accused who is on the run, posed as a policeman for several months, sources have told NDTV. Rs 1 lakh will be given to the person providing information about his whereabouts, Pune Police Commissioner has announced.

A 26-year-old woman was allegedly raped inside a state transport bus at the Swargate bus station, which is one of the largest bus depots of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), in Pune on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old accused, a resident of Gunat village in Pune, is named in half a dozen cases of theft, robbery and chain-snatching in Pune and Ahilyanagar district. He has been out on bail since 2019 in one of the offences.

Sources say the Swargate bus stop was the accused's usual haunt. He was, say sources, often spotted around there in a shirt, sports shoes and a mask. He would tell people around the bus stand that he was a policeman, the sources added.

According to the survivor, she was waiting for a bus for Phaltan in Satara district at one of the platforms around 5.45 am on Tuesday, when the accused engaged her in conversation, calling her 'didi' (sister), and said the bus for Satara had arrived at another platform.

He took her to an empty 'Shiv Shahi' AC bus parked elsewhere on the premises. As the lights inside the bus were not on, she hesitated to get in but the man convinced her that it was the right vehicle. The accused then followed her and raped her, the woman, who works in the medical field, told the police.

According to residents of Gunat village, the accused is married and has children. He also has a brother and his parents are farm labourers, say villagers.

Earlier today, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik ordered a security audit of all bus stations and depots of the State Road Transport Corporation.

The minister has also directed authorities to deploy women security guards, an MSRTC release said. He also asked police to increase patrolling at depots and bus stations, adding that depot managers must stay at the facility to keep an eye on happenings.

The MSRTC issued an internal circular asking staffers to wear proper uniforms with nameplate for identification.

CCTV cameras will be made mandatory along with GPS and panic buttons in around 15,000 MSRTC buses, including those hired from private contractors, Mr Sarnaik said.

Failed To "Imagine Scenario" Like Oct 7: Israel Army Probe On Hamas Attack

An internal Israeli army probe into Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack released on Thursday acknowledged the military's "complete failure" to prevent the assault, which killed hundreds of Israelis, a military official said.

"October 7 was a complete failure, the IDF (military) failed in fulfilling its mission to protect Israeli civilians," the official said, briefing reporters about the report's contents, on condition of anonymity.

"Too many civilians died that day asking themselves in their hearts or out loud, where was the IDF?"

"The Israel Defense Forces failed to protect Israeli citizens. The Gaza Division was overrun in the early hours of the war, as terrorists took control and carried out massacres in the communities and roads in the area," the military said in the summary of the report released to journalists.

The military acknowledged that it was "overconfident" and had misconceptions about Hamas's military capabilities ahead of the Palestinian militant group's attack, a senior military official said at the same briefing.

The inquiry, which included 77 separate investigations into what transpired in communities, at army bases, and multiple confrontation points around the Gaza periphery, is in the process of being presented to those directly affected.

"We did not even imagine such a scenario," the first military official told journalists, adding that Palestinian militants led by Hamas caught Israel by surprise, not only in terms of the size and scale of the attack, but also its "brutality".

The military probe found that Hamas's attack happened in three waves and at its height more than 5,000 people entered Israel from Gaza.

"The first wave... included more than 1,000 Nukhba (elite force) terrorists who infiltrated under the cover of heavy fire," the summary of the inquiry said.

It added that a second wave included 2,000 militants and third wave was characterised by the arrival of hundreds of militants, along with several thousand civilians.

"In total, approximately 5,000 terrorists infiltrated Israeli territory during the attack," the report said.

Volcanic Eruption In 79 AD Turned Man's Brain Into Glass. How It Happened

It was a surprising discovery when scientists examining the remains of a man who died in bed in the ancient city of Herculaneum after Italy's Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD found dark fragments resembling obsidian inside his skull. It turns out the eruption had somehow turned his brain into glass.

It is the only case on record of such a phenomenon, and researchers now have answers for why and how it happened.

They say the vitrification - transformation into glass - of this victim's brain was the apparent effect of a scorching ash cloud that suddenly descended upon his city along the Bay of Naples, instantly killing all the inhabitants.

They concluded vitrification took place through a unique process of rapid exposure of the brain's organic material to a very high temperature - at least 510 degrees Celsius (950 degrees F) - and its subsequent rapid cooling.

The researchers conducted an extensive analysis that confirmed the glass nature of the fragments and revealed their physical properties.

"The glass formed as a result of this process allowed for an integral preservation of the biological brain material and its microstructures," said forensic anthropologist Pier Paolo Petrone of Universita di Napoli Federico II in Italy, one of the leaders of the research published in the journal Scientific Reports.

The eruption obliterated the thriving ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

"The only other type of organic glass we have evidence of is that produced in some rare cases of vitrification of wood, sporadic cases of which have been found at Herculaneum and Pompeii. However, in no other case in the world have vitrified organic human or animal remains ever been found," Petrone added.

Thousands of people were killed and the two cities were buried under a thick layer of volcanic material and mud, sitting untouched until their rediscovery in the 18th century. Victims were preserved in sudden death, as was the case with the one whose brain was turned to glass.

His body was first discovered in the 1960s inside a building called the College of the Augustales dedicated to the cult of Emperor Augustus, who had died in 14 AD. The individual was identified as a young man believed to have been the college's custodian. The remains were re-examined in 2018.

"I was in the room where the college's custodian was lying in his bed to document his charred bones. Under the lamp, I suddenly saw small glassy remains glittering in the volcanic ash that filled the skull," Petrone said.

"Taking one of these fragments, it had a black appearance and shiny surfaces quite similar to obsidian, a natural glass of volcanic origin - black and shiny, whose formation is due to the very rapid cooling of the lava. But, unlike obsidian, the glassy remains were extremely brittle and easy to crumble," Petrone said.

Analyses of this material, previously published in other scientific journals, revealed the presence of proteins and fatty acids common in human brain tissues, with the entire central nervous system exceptionally well preserved, represented by nerve cells interconnected by a dense network of fibers called axons.

The research is forging a deeper understanding of how the tragic events unfolded after the eruption.

"The study shows that the 'killer' at Herculaneum was the arrival in town of an early hot ash cloud. This highlights the importance of understanding the behavior of ash clouds, as they are very hazardous and still very poorly studied and understood," said volcanologist and study first author Guido Giordano of Roma Tre University in Italy.

The actual burial of the city occurred in later stages of the eruption.

The custodian at apparently around midnight was surprised while sleeping in his bed by the first effects of the eruption.

"As the postures of the victims' bodies show, the custodian of the college died instantly from the impact with the hot volcanic ash surge, as did all the rest of the inhabitants of Herculaneum," Petrone said. "The body of evidence found for the victims at Herculaneum shows that all people died instantly, so they did not have time to notice or suffer."

Who Will Head BJP After JP Nadda? Decision Likely By March 15, Say Sources

The next BJP chief could be announced as soon as within a fortnight, sources have indicated, citing that the organisational elections of the party have been completed in 12 states. Sources said the party's national president likely to be announced before March 15, after which an inauspicious period starts in the Hindu calendar..

Elections in Tamil Nadu, Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are already over. So is the situation in Assam. There will be no change in Bihar, where elections are due by the end of this year.

State in-charges have already been asked to submit prospective names. Some states like UP and Gujarat are likely to get unit presidents before a national president is announced.

Mr Nadda's tenure was extended until June 2024 in view of the Lok Sabha election, and with his induction into the government, the party has been looking at prospective candidates to succeed him.

But the process has been slow, with the leaders hoping to create consensus on the issue.

Out On Bail, Man Rapes Pune Woman Inside Bus 100 Metres From Police Station

Dattatraya Ramdas Gade, the man allegedly responsible for the rape of a 26-year-old woman in Pune, is a history sheeter, who was out on bail, the police have said. A manhunt is on in the city since the young woman reported the rape earlier today. The police have pressed in eight teams and sniffer dogs.

Gade has at least six cases of theft, robbery and chain-snatching registered against him in Pune and adjoining Ahilyanagar district. Arrested for a robbery, he has been out on bail snice 2019, reported news agency Press Trust of India quoting un-named officials.

Cases were registered against him in Shikrapur and Shirur police station limits in Pune district. He also faces cases in Ahilyanagar district. As late as last year, a theft case was lodged against him in Pune.

A Pune police team has already questioned his brother to know his whereabouts.

The rape took place at Swargate bus stand, one of the busiest in the city. Today, when Gade tricked the woman into the empty bus, locked its door and assaulted her, there have been people around, the police had said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Smartana Patil, has told reporters that CCTV footage showed the woman walking towards the bus with the accused. In fact, the police identified him from the footage. There were many people and several buses on the station premises when the incident took place, she said.

The woman had been waiting for a bus for Phaltan in Satara district around 5.45 am. The accused, according to MSRTC officials, had taken her to the empty bus claiming to be its conductor. When she pointed out the bus was empty, he said it had people inside who were sleeping.

After the assault, the woman took a bus for her hometown and narrated the incident to her friend on phone while on way, the police said. On her friend's advice, she got off the bus and went to the police to report the matter.

The MSRTC is one of the three public transport bodies in the country, with a fleet of more than 14,000 buses. Every day, more than 55 lakh passengers travel by its buses.

Couple's Dream Trip Turns Horrific After Crew Places Corpse Next To Them

A dream trip to Venice turned into nightmare for an Australian couple after a passenger died midway into the flight and the crew decided to put the dead body in a seat beside them. The couple, Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin were aboard the Qatar Airways flight when a woman suddenly collapsed in the aisle after going to the toilet, according to a report in news.com.au

Despite the crew's best efforts, she could not be revived and died on the spot. "Unfortunately, the lady couldn't be saved, which was pretty heartbreaking to watch," said Mr Ring.

After the crew spotted vacant seats on both sides of the couple, they asked them to move over to make space for the body.

"They looked a bit frustrated and then they just looked at me and saw seats were available beside me - my wife was on the other side, we're in a row of four by ourselves - and they just said to me, 'Can you move over, please?'"

The dead woman's body, wrapped in a blanket was then placed on the seat, much to the horror of the couple, who had to endure the remaining four hours next to it.

"When my husband turned around and said, "move, move", I was pretty shocked and I said, 'are they going to put her there?'" said Ms Colin, a self-admitted nervous flyer.

Things turned worse when the couple was forced to wait after the landing as police and medical officers boarded the plane. The couple said they had been traumatised by the entire incident. They claimed that there were other empty seats on their flight but the crew did not offer to relocate them to another seat.

After the couple's horrific experience went viral, Qatar Airways apologised, adding that they were looking into the incident.

“We apologise for any inconvenience or distress this incident may have caused, and are in the process of contacting passengers in line with our policies and procedures.”

Meanwhile, Qantas, through which the couple booked the flight, also said it would reach out to them.

"Ms Colin booked tickets through Qantas and travelled with Qatar Airways, a fellow Oneworld Alliance carrier," a Qantas spokesperson said.

"The process for handling incidents onboard an aircraft like this is managed by the operating airline, which in this case is Qatar Airways."

"Ready For Another Language War": MK Stalin Convenes All-Party Meet

Amid the ongoing Hindi imposition row, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday said the state was "ready" for "another language war" and also announced convening an all-party meet on March 5 to discuss the Lok Sabha delimitation issue.

Tamil Nadu was facing the "threat" of losing 8 seats as the state has successfully implemented the family planning programme that led to population control, he said while addressing reporters after chairing a Cabinet meet at the Secretariat here.

About 40 political parties registered with the Election Commission of India have been invited for the all-party meeting, he said and appealed for unity, overcoming political differences.

Responding, BJP state president K Annamalai said Stalin was now trying to "shift the narrative" with the "imaginary fear" regarding delimitation as people of the state had rejected his argument on the three-language policy. He indicated that the BJP may not attend the all-party meet.

Asked if the March 5 meeting will discuss the three-language policy, a bone of contention between the NDA-led Centre and the Tamil Nadu government in light of the National Education Policy (NEP), Stalin said that to raise voice in the Parliament on issues like NEP, central funds and NEET, adequate number of MPs was required.

"Because, in the name of delimitation, a sword is hanging over southern states," he said.

The state was leading in all development indices, but now faced the "threat" of losing out on the Lok Sabha seats post delimitation as the process would be based on the state's population.

"Tamil Nadu succeeded in population control through the family planning programme. Just because population is less, there is a situation of the Lok Sabha seats being cut down (in TN). We stand to lose 8 seats and as a result, we would be having only 31 MPs, and not the 39 (present number)," he added.

"Our representation (in Parliament) will reduce, Tamil Nadu's voice is being stifled. This is a matter of Tamil Nadu's rights. All leaders and political parties should jointly speak across party lines on the issue," the CM added.

Responding to a query if the Centre was "sowing the seeds for another language war," in light of the alleged Hindi imposition, Stalin replied, "Yes, certainly. We are ready for it." The ruling DMK has been opposed to the three-language policy and has been insisting Tamil Nadu was content with Tamil and English, and has accused the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre of "imposing Hindi," a charge denied by the union government.

The "language war" refers to the DMK's anti-Hindi agitation in 1965, when the Dravidian party successfully campaigned against the alleged imposition of the language on the Tamil people.

In a copy of the invitation for the all-party meeting uploaded on his 'X' page, Stalin highlighted the various issues the state was facing, including central fund allocation.

Under such circumstances, the number of Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu going down will only further impact the state and it was the need of the hour to put up a show of unity in the interest of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, the need for such an all-party meeting, the CM added.

Meanwhile, Annamalai slammed the CM.

"When TN CM Thiru MK Stalin knows the whole of TN has rejected their argument... on the third language for our children studying in TN Govt schools similar to the schools run by TN CM's family, he now wants to shift the narrative to his imaginary fear of TN losing in the Delimitation of seats. What a shame & downfall for DMK!" "When our Hon PM Thiru @narendramodi avl had clearly said delimitation - if and when it happens - will be favourable to all, including the southern states, why this fear-mongering Thiru @mkstalin? Imaginary fears & stupid arguments have, of late, become TN CM's arsenal!" he said in a post on micro-blogging site 'X.' Later, speaking to reporters in Coimbatore, Annamalai demanded to know on what basis Stalin was making such claims and whether it was revealed so in the Parliament, by PM Narendra Modi or through a "secret document." Only if this is revealed would the BJP attend the March 5 meeting, he said and slammed the CM for "creating panic and this doesn't suit his position." "When delimitation comes, it is our duty to bring it without affecting the state. Lok Sabha seats have to increase and that is the need of the hour," he said.

Crackdown On Illegal Travel Agents In Amritsar, Licenses Of 40 Cancelled

Punjab has cancelled the licenses of 40 travel agents amid a huge row over the deportation of Indians who migrated illegally to the US. Licenses of some IELTS centers have also been cancelled and such action will be taken in future as well, sources said.

Sources said the Amritsar police have taken action on the basis of a complaint against travel agents operating illegally from the city and more action could be expected in the coming days.

The police are continuously registering cases against travel agents who send Indians illegally and raids are being conducted to catch them, sources said.

The complainant in this case, Sarabjit Singh, said he had given a letter to the Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni.

Government sources earlier said people from Punjab comprise the biggest chunk of the Indians being deported by the US. Three flights arrived on February 5, February 15 and February 16 in which 333 Indians were sent. Of them, the maximum people - 126 or 37.8 per cent - were from Punjab, sources said.

The clarification came days after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's objection to the flights landing in his state. Sources said because of the maximum number of Punjabis among the deportees, 21 flights have been landed in Amritsar since May 2020.

Instances of illegal immigration from Punjab -- where people eager for a better life are promised visas to travel abroad in exchange for large sums of money but are ultimately routed in on fake visas -- have been reported widely, adding the term "Dunki route" to the lexicon.

Reports said more than 3,200 police cases have been filed against travel agents in Punjab over the last three years.

There have been multiple arrests in such cases. Among them was Punjabi singer Fatehjit Singh, who ended up in the police net in September last year. The most popular destinations include the US, Canada, UK and Australia.

Rape Survivor Faces Horror Again In Bengaluru Hotel, Cop Arrested

A 17-year-old rape survivor was allegedly raped by a police constable at a Bengaluru hotel, officials said on Monday.

The incident took place in December, when constable Arun asked the survivor to meet her at a hotel on the pretext of helping her.

According to officials, the teen initially befriended Vicky, who allegedly raped her on a false promise of marriage. Vicky also assaulted the girl.

The survivor's mother filed a complaint with Bommanahalli police, but Arun befriended the accused.

The constable assured justice to the girl and also promised to find her a job. He allegedly called her to a hotel, where he mixed sedatives in a liquor bottle and forced her to consume it. Arun then raped the survivor and threatened to circulate her private videos if she disclosed the incident to anyone, the officials said.

Both Arun and Vicky have been arrested and charged under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The accused have been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

Liquor Ban In J&K? Signature Campaign, Posters, Spark Massive Row

Jammu and Kashmir is seeing a fresh political row over liquor ban - an issue that came up in 2016 but got thumbs downed by Mehbooba Mufti's ruling People's Democratic Party. Now the battlelines have been re-drawn, with the PDP spearheading the demand for a ban. The party has started a signature campaign in support of the ban and it is the ruling National Conference that is accusing it of hypocrisy.
Over the weekend, posters came up across Srinagar, supporting the ban and calling upon tourists to "respect local culture and traditions". Police action to remove the posters has been questioned by the Opposition.

The matter is expected to dominate the assembly in the budget session which begins on March 3. Two members - one of the PDP and one from the National Conference -- have submitted bills to ban liquor.

PDP's Fayaz Ahamd Mir, National Conference's Ahsan Pardesi and a third MLA -- Awami Ittehad Party's (AIP) Sheikh Khursheed Ahmad - have moved separate bills in the assembly seeking ban on sale of liquor in the Union Territory.

Today PDP leader and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti  joined the signature campaign that was  launched by her daughter  Iltija Mufti yesterday.

A day before, on Friday, traders at Srinagar's historic Lal Chowk had put up posters that, after welcoming tourists, said, "For a memorable and enjoyable trip, we kindly request: Love and cherish your family, avoid liquor, drugs, spitting on roads and smoking. Respect our culture and traditions".

NC MLA, Ahsan Pardesi said, in support of his bill, that the unchecked sale of alcohol disregards the religious and cultural ethos of Kashmir.

"Our heritage has always stood against intoxicants, and this bill is a step toward preserving those values," he added.

Kashmir - heavily dependent on tourism -- has always been cosmopolitan in its hospitality. The first liquor shop in the Valley dates back to the British era. Since then, liquor shops have functioned in Kashmir, but as terror broke out in the Valley in the 1990s, Islamist terrorist groups banned the sale of liquor.

The ruling National Conference has said it is pro-choice and would prefer to leave it to tourists to decide whether they wanted a tipple or not.

Several shots were fired at a hospital in central Pennsylvania, with the gunman being reportedly killed in the encounter with police. The incident took place at the UPMC Memorial Hospital and some people are reportedly injured.

Pennsylvania Governor, Josh Shapiro, said, "I've been briefed on the tragic shooting at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County and I am on my way to the scene. The hospital is now secure and members of the police are on the ground responding alongside our local and federal partners."

"Follow the direction of local authorities and stay clear of the area. We will share more updates as they become available," Mr Shapiro said.

Maharashtra Suspends Bus Services To Karnataka After Attack On Driver

Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Saturday ordered the suspension of the state transport buses to Karnataka after an MSRTC bus was attacked in the neighbouring state.

Mr Sarnaik said the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus, which was travelling from Bengaluru to Mumbai, was attacked in Chitradurga around 9.10 pm on Friday by pro-Kannada activists.

They also blackened the face of driver Bhaskar Jadhav and assaulted him, the minister said.

A police case has been registered in Karnataka in connection with the alleged attack.

"Bus services to Karnataka won't be resumed unless the Karnataka government makes its stand clear on the issue," he said.

On the same day, a conductor of the state-owned transport corporation bus of Karnataka was allegedly assaulted on the outskirts of the district headquarters town of Belagavi bordering Maharashtra, for not replying to a girl in Marathi.

It is unclear whether the attack on the MSRTC bus in Chitradurga was in retaliation to the alleged assault on the conductor.

Mr Sarnaik said the MSRTC bus (MH-14 KQ 7714) had barely crossed Chitradurga when pro-Kannada activists attacked the vehicle.

Four people have been arrested in another case for allegedly assaulting the conductor in Belagavi, the police said. The conductor has also been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, they said.

With tears in his eyes, the 51-year-old conductor, Mahadevappa Mallappa Hukkeri, on Friday told reporters that a girl who boarded the bus with her male friend at Sulebhavi village spoke in Marathi. Hukkeri said he told her that he did not know Marathi and asked her to speak in Kannada.

"When I said I don't know Marathi, the girl abused me saying that I must learn Marathi. Suddenly a large number of people gathered and assaulted me on my head and all over the body," the conductor said.

The injured bus conductor was admitted to the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences, police said, adding he got minor injuries and was out of danger.

"A case was registered and we have arrested four people in connection with the assault on the conductor and based on a counter complaint lodged by the girl, who is 14 years old, a case was registered against the conductor under POCSO for allegedly using derogatory remarks against her," a senior police officer said.

"No arrest has been made yet in connection with the POCSO case. We need to investigate and look into the allegations and accordingly, further action will be taken," he said.

Speaking to reporters, Belagavi Police Commissioner Iada Martin Marbaniang said, four accused have been arrested in connection with assault on the conductor. Three teams led by as many inspectors have been formed to arrest the other accused who are on the run.

"All those involved in the incident will be arrested soon," he said.

A counter case has come from the opposite side, accusing the conductor of misbehaving with the girl. A case was registered on Friday night in this regard, he said.

"We are doing the investigation and we will see what is the truth. Accordingly, we will take action as per law....during the investigation we will get statements from other passengers on the bus. We will be very neutral," he said.

Pointing out that the region has been witnessing tension because of the border issue for long and this incident may trigger a problem, the Commissioner said in response to a question. He also said that he had spoken to the neighbouring district's SP to ensure law and order.

"The issue can be handled through an investigation. There is nothing to be concerned about it. Peace must be maintained by everyone," he added.

Following the incident, pro-Kannada activists staged a protest on Saturday by blocking the Belagavi-Bagalkote road and burning effigies. They were whisked away in a police van.

Similarly, activists staged a protest in front of Marihal police station condemning the alleged attack on the conductor and terming the case registered against him as false. They were also taken away from the spot by the police.

Belagavi has a substantial Marathi-speaking population and a section among them have been demanding the merger of the district with Maharashtra, which is stoutly opposed by the state as well as the Kannada populace residing there.

The European Union (EU) has issued a surprising warning about coffee, labeling it "harmful to humans if swallowed" under new chemical safety regulations, according to a report by The Telegraph. The 27-nation bloc in a fresh regulation, also banned the use of caffeine as a pesticide, stating that the central component of coffee could cause adverse effects on the heart, hydration, and body temperature.

"Caffeine has adverse effects on the cardiovascular system, hydration and body temperature in adults, as well as on the central nervous system (sleep, anxiety, behavioural changes) in adults and children, and an adverse birth weight-related outcome in pregnant women," the report said, citing scientific evidence from the European Food Safety Authority.

The European Commission issued the diktat in response to an application by a French company, Progarein, seeking permission to use the stimulant to ward off insects from crops of cabbages and potatoes. However, it has prompted fears that Brussels could one day target coffee, a staple drink consumed by the Europeans.

Reacting to the news, Anders Vistisen, a Danish MEP and chief whip of Patriots for Europe, called out the EU and its bureaucrats for their unnecessary 'meddling'.

"More unwelcome and needless inference from meddling bureaucrats in Brussels! What is this all leading to? Are they seriously going to eventually force us to drink decaffeinated coffee? It's becoming ridiculous," said Mr Visitsen.

"Nobody thinks smoking and whiskey are good for you, but they add pleasure to many people's lives," he added.

Also Read | Car Crash Turns Into Crazy Love Story For Two Strangers In China

The Danish leader cited the example of the EU trying to ban cinnamon roll as it contains coumarin - a compound that is toxic in high doses.

"A few years ago, the EU wished to ban cinnamon on Danish pastries and the bakers union had to wrangle a get-out clause. It would suit everyone much better if many of these matters were left to national competence and personal choice," said Mr Visitsen, referring to the Danish pastry being reclassified as a "traditional" food to avoid the ban.

The warning is unlikely to deter coffee consumption but as the regulation kicks into effect, albeit for caffeine --- coffee's cultural status as a beloved beverage faces an awkward clash with Brussels' bureaucracy.

Supertech Can't Hand Over 16 Projects To Government Company: Supreme Court

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed an order appointing state-owned NBCC as the project management consultant to complete debt-ridden realty firm Supertech Ltd's 16 housing projects at nearly Rs 9,500 crore cost.

The top court was hearing two appeals against the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal or NCLAT order and expressed concern for home buyers.

A bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan, issued notices to the parties on the appeals and stayed the NCLAT order that appointed National Buildings Construction Corporation or NBCC to take over the Supertech projects.

The NCLAT on December 12, 2024 asked the NBCC, a PSU under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, to complete 16 housing projects, comprising 49,748 homes in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Karnataka.

Around 27,000 home buyers await receiving homes in these projects.

The NCLAT judgment came after the October 1, 2014 order of the top court that allowed the insolvency appellate tribunal to examine and decide a proposal of the NBCC seeking to complete stalled housing projects.

The CJI asked the parties concerned to file their their responses in writing with regard to plans about the completion of stalled housing projects sans the NBCC.

"We respect the decision of Supreme Court to stay the NCLAT order which allowed NBCC to take over Supertech's projects arbitrarily without respecting the interests of other stakeholders like land authorities and lenders. We welcome the Supreme Court's instructions of inviting other companies to propose a solution which takes care of all stakeholders along with homebuyers. As promoters, we want a solution for all stakeholders including homebuyers, bankers and land authorities," said R K Arora, the chairman of Supertech group, in a statement.

The NCLAT had directed the NBCC to "start the process of award of work before March 31, 2025" and award of contract within a month thereafter and the construction was ordered to start from May 1, 2025 for the 16 projects.

It also ordered the "constitution of an apex court committee and project-wise court committee" for each project.

In each project-wise court committee, the NBCC was asked by NCLAT to nominate one member.

On May 11, 2023, the top court allowed a "project-wise resolution" process for Supertech Ltd and allowed construction of all other projects by the developer under the supervision of an interim resolution professional (IRP).

Hamas Displays 4 Coffins On Stage Before Handover Of Israeli Hostages' Bodies

Hamas handed over coffins it said contain the bodies of four Israeli hostages on Thursday, including those of the Bibas family who became symbols of the ordeal that has gripped Israel since the Gaza war began.

The transfer of the bodies is the first by Hamas since its October 7, 2023 attack on Israel triggered the war, and is taking place under a fragile ceasefire that has seen living hostages exchanged for Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

The ceremony to return the bodies of Shiri Bibas, her two young boys -- Kfir and Ariel -- and a fourth captive, Oded Lifshitz, 83 at the time of his capture, took place at a former cemetery in the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis.

Ahead of the handover, Hamas displayed four black coffins on a stage erected on the sandy patch of ground. A banner behind them depicted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a blood-stained vampire. An armed militant stood nearby.

Each casket bore a small photo of each of the dead. White mock-up missiles placed near the coffins bore the inscription: "They were killed by USA bombs."

A militant, his face wrapped in a red and white keffiyeh scarf, sat on the stage to complete documents with a Red Cross official before the coffins were loaded into Red Cross vehicles, AFPTV images showed.

The Israeli military said later that "the hostages' bodies were handed over" to it and the Shin Bet internal security agency in Gaza.

Hundreds of people gathered to witness the ceremony. A fence had been erected to keep onlookers away from the immediate area where the handover to the Red Cross was to occur.

Armed men in military fatigues and wearing Hamas headbands were ubiquitous, standing near the stage for the ceremony -- carefully choreographed as for previous transfers of hostages during the truce.

Footage of the family's abduction, filmed and broadcast by Hamas during their attack, showed the mother and her sons Ariel, then four, and Kfir, just nine months old, being seized from their home near the Gaza border.

Yarden Bibas, the boys' father and Shiri's husband, was abducted separately that day and released from the Gaza Strip in a previous hostage-prisoner exchange on February 1.

'Day of grief'

The repatriation of their bodies is part of the first six-week phase of a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which took effect on January 19 after more than 15 months of fighting in Gaza.

Netanyahu said Thursday would be "a very difficult day for the State of Israel -- a heartbreaking day, a day of grief".

Under the ceasefire's first phase, 19 Israeli hostages have been released by militants so far in exchange for more than 1,100 Palestinian prisoners in a series of Red Cross-mediated swaps.

Of the remaining 14 Gaza hostages eligible for release under phase one, Israel says eight are dead.

The Bibas family members became national symbols of the despair that has gripped the nation since the Hamas attack and hostage takings.

While their deaths are largely accepted as fact abroad after Hamas said an Israeli air strike killed them early in the war, Israel has never confirmed the claim and many remained unconvinced -- including the Bibas family.

Late on Wednesday, the Israeli campaign group the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said it had been informed about the "heart-shattering" news of the deaths of the three Bibas family members.

The Bibas family said it would wait for a confirmation.

"Should we receive devastating news, it must come through the proper official channels after all identification procedures are completed," it said in a statement late Wednesday.

The national forensic medicine institute in Tel Aviv has mobilised 10 doctors to expedite the identification process, public broadcaster Kan reported.

Single swap

Israel and Hamas announced a deal earlier this week for the return of the remains of eight hostages in two groups this week and next, as well as the release of the last six living Israeli captives on Saturday.

The hostages' forum named the six as Eliya Cohen, Tal Shoham, Omer Shem Tov, Omer Wenkert, Hisham al-Sayed, and Avera Mengistu.

The ceasefire in Gaza has held despite accusations of violations on both sides. It has also been under strain from US President Donald Trump's widely condemned plan to take control of rubble-strewn Gaza and relocate its population of more than two million Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Tuesday that talks would begin "this week" on the truce's second phase, which is expected to lay out a more permanent end to the war.

Senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu told AFP on Wednesday that Hamas was ready to free all remaining hostages held in Gaza in a single swap during phase two.

He did not clarify how many hostages were currently being held by Hamas or other militant groups.

Hamas and its allies took 251 people hostage during their attack. Prior to Thursday's handover, there were 70 hostages in Gaza, including 35 the Israeli military says are dead.

That attack resulted in the deaths of 1,211 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 48,297 people in Gaza, the majority of them civilians, according to figures from the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory that the United Nations considers reliable.

Man Who Filed Case Against KCR Killed, Wife Says He Was Offered Rs 10 Lakh

The family of a man who had moved court accusing former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) of corruption in the Kaleshwaram irrigation project, alleged he was threatened and offered Rs 10 lakh to settle the case, days before he was found murdered on Wednesday.

N Sarala, wife of N Rajalingamurthy, who was stabbed to death by unidentified people on the outskirts of his village in Jayshankar Bhupalpally district, alleged the followers of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) former MLA Gandra Venkatramana Reddy, who is close to KCR's son and party's working president KT Rama Rao, carried out the attack.

"KTR's follower is Venkatramana Reddy. His follower is Haribabu. He got this done (murder). Around 10 days ago, my husband was threatened and offered Rs 10 lakh to withdraw the complaint in the corruption case against KCR," Sarala, who was a former Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) councillor before moving to the Congress, said.

"Mr Reddy got my husband killed in the middle of the road because he filed a case in the Kaleshwaram case, fearing they may lose. I want justice. What will happen to my two children?" she added.

Rajalingamurthy's murder, which took place a day before a high court hearing in the corruption case, has triggered a massive political row, with the ruling Congress blaming the BRS. Police, however, said the victim was targeted over some land disputes.

In October 2023, Rajalingamurthy filed a private complaint in the court, seeking registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against KCR, who was then the Chief Minister, and others after some piers of the Medigadda barrage of the Kaleshwaram project "sank". He alleged irregularities in the construction of the project.

KCR, along with his nephew and former minister T Harish Rao, subsequently approached the Telangana High Court, which in December last year suspended an order passed by the principal district sessions judge in Jayashankar Bhupalpally, allowing a petition against them.

An inquiry commission constituted by the current Congress government on the alleged irregularities is expected to submit its report next month.

Mr Reddy, a former BRS MLA from Bhupalpally, dismissed the accusations against him. "Neither did I threaten nor did I offer Rs 10 lakh to anyone. The case is already in court. This is not going to change, whether Rajalingamurthy is alive or not. He was involved in land disputes. That is why he must have been targeted," he said.

The BRS also ruled out any possible role of its party leaders in the murder. It said neither Ms Sarala's complaint nor the FIR has named KTR or Mr Reddy.

Congress spokesperson Addanki Dayakar, however, alleged BRS' role in the murder. "There is a clear link. He (victim) was not just a complainant, he was also to give evidence about the irregularities in the Kaleshwaram case," he said.

What Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi Said After New Chief Minister's Announcement

As the BJP picked Rekha Gupta for the post of the Delhi Chief Minister, messages of "support" came from her predecessors. AAP leaders and former Delhi chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi, who reacted within minutes of the announcement, said they would "support her in every work for the development of the people of Delhi".

Both the leaders hoped that the new Chief Minister and the BJP would fulfil all the promises they made to the people of Delhi.

Reminding the BJP of one of its key poll promises, Atishi said, "We hope that the amount of Rs 2,500 per month promised by BJP to women will be transferred to the accounts of all women on March 8."

Read | All About Rekha Gupta, Delhi's Fourth Woman Chief Minister

Women At Centre Of BJP's Poll Promises

The BJP - which had been out of power in Delhi since 1998 - won the 2025 assembly elections, winning 48 seats against AAP's 22 in the 70-member assembly. Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Satyendar Jain and Saurabh Bharadwaj were among several top leaders of AAP, which ruled Delhi for 10 years, lost in their respective constituencies.

In the run-up to the Delhi assembly elections, women were at the centre of the BJP's poll pitch. The party has promised Rs 2,500 monthly aid for women, surpassing AAP's promise of Rs 2,100, financial assistance of Rs 21,000 for every pregnant woman, LPG cylinders at Rs 500 and also Rs 2,500 pension for senior citizens.

The Delhi Women and Child Development Department has already been instructed to prepare drafts by Thursday for schemes centred around women, news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

The official said the department will hold a press briefing to announce the schemes and related details on the occasion of International Women's Day on March 8.

Only Incumbent BJP Woman Chief Minister

Rekha Gupta met Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena this evening and staked a claim to form government in the national capital soon after she was chosen as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly during a BJP legislature party meeting. The meeting was attended by all 48 newly-elected BJP MLAs in the presence of central observers Ravi Shankar Prasad and OP Dhankar. The first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh thanked the central leadership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all the BJP MLAs for the responsibility and pledged to "take Delhi to new heights" after her name was announced.

She, along with the council of ministers, will take the oath of office at Ramlila Maidan tomorrow. Key political figures, including PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Ministers from BJP-ruled states, are expected to attend the ceremony.

Ms Gupta will be the fourth woman Chief Minister of the capital after Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress) and Atishi (AAP). The 50-year-old - a former Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) president and civic body councillor - is also going to be the only incumbent woman chief minister in any BJP-ruled state.

Watch: Rizwan's Gesture After Pak Star Concedes 16 In 1 Over vs NZ Is Viral

Pakistan's start in the Champions Trophy 2025 was not at all worth remembering. Their famed bowling line-up came under pressure. Fluent hundreds by opener Will Young and skipper Tom Latham powered New Zealand to a competitive 320 for five against hosts and defending champions Pakistan in the Champions Trophy opener on Wednesday. Young compiled an important innings of 107 off 113 balls, while Latham remained unbeaten on 118. Glenn Phillips then blazed away to a 39-ball 61 to prop up the Kiwi innings at the National Stadium. Young struck 12 fours and one six, while Latham batted through the innings to strike 10 boundaries and three maximums. Young played anchor after Pakistan elected to field first and had New Zealand reeling at 40 for two and then 73 for three in the 17th over.

Young fast bowler Naseem Shah got the prized wicket of Kane Williamson who was caught behind for a single digit score for the first time in his last 35 ODI outings.

Making a comeback to the team after an injury that had kept him out of the recently-held tri-series, Haris Rauf had Daryl Mitchell mistiming a pull shot to leave the visitors in trouble.

Opener Devon Conway was the first wicket to fall on a pitch which clearly has some grip in it for the spinners, as Abrar Ahmed, brought in the eighth over, used a carom ball to beat the southpaw.

With three wickets gone with not many runs on the board, Young, who is playing only because of an injury to Rachin Ravindra, steadied the ship in partnership with Latham as they put on 118 runs for the fourth wicket.

Pakistan, depending on one specialist spinner, three pace bowlers, and two part-time spinners in Khushdil Shah and Salman Agha, just didn't have the penetration to break the partnership.

After Young fell while looking to open up after sweeping his way to his fourth one-day hundred, Latham and Phillips went after the Pakistan bowling in the final 10 overs.

Latham, who scored his eighth ODI hundred, and Phillips walloped Abrar and Haris for 32 runs in the 44th and 45th overs. In the 47th over, Shaheen Shah Afridi was smashed for 18 runs. Mohammad Rizwan could be seen comforting Abrar after he was hit for 16 in one over by Tom Latham.

Phillips, who fell in the final over to Haris while trying a reverse scoop shot, did the maximum damage with four sixes and three fours.

Rauf was the most expensive bowler, conceding 83 runs in his 10 overs for two wickets.

Earlier, President Asif Zardari opened the tournament and was introduced to both teams by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi and ICC officials.

The crowd turnout at the start of the match was not as high as anticipated but as the weather improved, the stadium was getting packed with spectators eager to watch a major ICC event in the country for the first time since 1996.

Woman Loses Rs 4.3 Crore, Becomes Homeless, Trying To Find Love Online

A woman based in Perth has been forced to live homeless after losing over Rs 4.3 crore ($780,000) in life savings to scammers while searching for love online. According to a report in news.com.au, Annette Ford, 57, is now couch-surfing in Western Australia and hoping to secure housing at an affordable retirement village as the scammers remain free.

Ms Ford joined the dating pool after her 33-year-long marriage ended in 2018 and her ex-husband moved on quickly. Looking to seek a love life of her own, she joined a dating site called "Plenty of Fish" where she started talking to a man named 'William'.

Over the course of several months, the stranger managed to win Ms Ford's trust before asking her for money. 'Wlliam' said he needed Rs 2,75,000 ($5000) as his wallet had been stolen in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

"He said he had been mugged outside the site he was working on (in Kuala Lumpur) and they took his wallet and his cards," said Ms Ford.

"The next thing I know he's in hospital and I'm being landed with a $5000 hospital payable to an Australian doctor. I (paid) that. Then there was a hotel bill, and he said he couldn't pay the workers on the site because he didn't have access to his cards."

The requests for money continued and by the time Ms Ford suspected she had been scammed, she was out of Rs 1.6 crore ($300,000), having drained her self-managed super fund. Despite reporting the case to the Australian Federal Police, Ms Ford did not hear anything back.

The second scam

Four years later, Ms Ford came across another scammer -- this time on Facebook who went by the name, 'Nelson'. The stranger told her that he lived in Amsterdam and had a friend in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who needed $2500 to help with an ongoing investigation.

Aware of the danger, she refused initially but the stranger told her to deposit money he sent to her into a Bitcoin ATM. Ms Ford said there was money going in and out of her account that she wasn't aware of and before she could realise it, her account was out of Rs 1.5 crore ($280,000).

Having lost everything, Ms Ford is now begging Australians to not fall prey to such scams. "They say all the right things, they sweep you off your feet but they're going to take your money and they're going to leave you broke," Ms Ford warned.

Last month, a British woman was swindled of Rs 98.5 lakh (£92,300) after a friend of two decades, ran a catfish scam against her.

Suits, the American drama series set in New York's fictional corporate law firm, enjoys a massive fandom. Especially its lead character Harvey Spectre played by Gabriel Macht has been an eternal favourite amongst the fans of the show.

However, now that the spin-off  titled Suits LA is premiering today, it leaves us with the question of why it took six years for the makers to come up with it.

As per a report on Screenrant, Suits gained a rising momentum when it was released on OTT platforms for streaming, in 2023. This was primarily the reason why Suits LA was initiated.

The craze around the show got stronger when Suits dropped on Netflix, beating Wednesday, which was one of the most trending shows at that time.

As per Hollywood Reporter, Suits also broke the viewership record of Steve Carell's The Office, which was set in 2020.

As for the spinoff Suits LA, it comes with an interesting cast featuring Stephen Amell in the role of Ted Black, as per TV Guide, Jost McDermitt as Stuart Lane, Bryan Greenberg as Rick Dodson, Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, Troy Winbush as Kevin, and Alice Lee as Leah, these are all key roles in the upcoming series.

Everyone's favourite Harvey Spectre played by Gabriel Macht also makes a comeback for 3 episodes in the spin-off.

10 Injured After Maha Kumbh Rush Triggers Chaos At Delhi Railway Station

At least 10 people were injured after a sudden rush of passengers caused by two trains for the Maha Kumbh being delayed led to an overcrowding situation at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night, officials said. At least four people fell unconscious and had to be hospitalised.

The chaotic situation developed around 8 pm on platform numbers 14 and 15 of the station as passengers were waiting to board trains to Prayagraj.

Officials said additional security forces have been deployed to control the situation at the railway station and four fire engines were also rushed to the spot. The situation, they said, is under control and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is on the way to the station.

Railway authorities have urged people not to believe rumours of a stampede.

Videos showed a massive crowd at the platform as a train rolled in. Officials said there was a rush to board the train as well as panic when passengers realised that not all of them would be able to get in. In the videos, at least two people were also seen lying unconscious as passengers around them attempted to resuscitate them.

"When the Prayagraj Express was on platform number 14, many people were present there. The Swatatantra Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani (both of which pass through Prayagraj) were delayed and passengers of these trains were also present on platforms 12,13 and 14," said a police official.

"Kohli Zindabad": Fans In Karachi Shower Love On India Star. Video Viral

Star India batter Virat Kohli enjoys a huge fan following and his popularity across the border, Pakistan, is no secret. Ahead of the Champions Trophy, which will be played in Pakistan and UAE (only India matches) under the hybrid model, Kohli chants gripped the National Stadium in Karachi as fans showered their love towards the former India captain. In fact, a fan even raised chants of "Virat Kohli zindabaad" (long live Virat Kohli) chants outside the stadium. The incident took place after after the tri-nation series final between Pakistan and New Zealand on Friday.

A video of the same incident has now gone viral on social media. In the video, a fan, introduced himself by the name of Karan, labelled himself as Kohli's biggest fan. He even revealed that people in his neighbourhood call him 'Kohli'.

In the same video, some fans were also seen making "RCB, RCB" chants.

Amid uncertainity over his future in the Indian team, former England captain Kevin Pietersen backed Kohli to silence his critics, just like he has done in the past.

While speaking on Star Sports, Pietersen said: "He is one of the greats of the game. There have been too many people who have written him off on too many occasions. You can't write these guys off because of the aura they have when they walk out to bat. The question mark comes down to Virat Kohli."

"The question mark doesn't come down to me, you, the selectors, the coaches, and the other players. Virat Kohli can only answer the question, in terms of how long he wants to continue, and how much fight he has to get better and to create those high standards that everybody expects from him," he added.

The Indian team left for Dubai on Saturday, five days ahead of their Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh.

India's squad for ICC Champions Trophy, 2025: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill (Vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohd. Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Varun Chakaravarthy.

Non-travelling substitutes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. The three players will travel to Dubai as and when required.

"How Can Chief Justice..." Veep's Big Remark On Separation Of Powers

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar today said that the Chief Justice of the country shouldn't be involved in any executive appointment in a democracy like India. "How can in a country like ours or in any democracy, by statutory prescription, the Chief Justice of India participate in the selection of the CBI director? Can there be any legal rationale for it?" Mr Dhankhar wondered.

"I can appreciate that the Statutory prescription took shape because the executive of the day has yielded to a judicial verdict. But the time has come to revisit. This surely does not merge with democracy. How can we involve the Chief Justice of India with any executive appointment?" he added.

His statement has come at a time when a meeting is to be held for the selection of the next Chief Election Commissioner. The selection would be a first since the Chief Election Commissioner And Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service And Term of Office) Act, 2023, was passed.

The act came after a verdict by the Supreme Court in March 2023 which directed for a three-member panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice (CJI) to operate till Parliament enacted a law. The new law, however, excluded the CJI from the panel. Detractors say the new law amounts to excessive interference of the executive in the appointments and was detrimental to the independence of the poll panel.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is set to retire on February 18 and the selection committee for appointing his successor is expected to meet possibly on Monday.

The committee - comprised of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, will deliberate on the appointment a day before the Supreme Court hears petitions against the new law.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, while speaking at the National Judicial Academy in Bhopal expressed his deep concern over the breach of the principle of separation of powers and said, "Executive governance by judicial decree is a Constitutional paradox, that the largest democracy on the planet cannot afford any longer. When institutions forget their bounds, democracy is remembered by the wounds this forgetfulness imparts."

He said that these institutions should operate within defined constitutional bounds while "maintaining cooperative dialogue, keeping national interest in mind".

"Executive governance reflecting the will of the people is constitutionally sanctified. Accountability is enforceable when executive roles are performed by an elected government. Governments are accountable to the legislature. And periodically accountable to the electorate. But if executive governance is arrogated or outsourced, the enforceability of accountability will not be there. Exclusively, governance lies with the government with utmost respect, any intervention from any source, in the country or outside, from legislature or judiciary, is antithetical to constitutionalism and certainly not in consonance as with fundamental premise of democracy", he added.

Recalling his stint as Parliamentary Affairs Minister in 1990, Mr Dhankhar said the Supreme Court then had eight judges.

"More often than not, all the eight judges sat together (on a bench hearing a case)....When the strength of the Supreme Court was eight judges, under Article 145(3), there was a stipulation that the interpretation of the Constitution will be by a bench of five judges or more," he said.

"Please note, when this strength was eight, it (size of constitutional bench) was five. And the Constitution allows the highest court of the land to interpret the Constitution," he added.

But under the guise of interpretation, there can be no "arrogation of authority", and the essence and spirit which the founding fathers had in mind under Article 145(3) must be respected, the vice president further said.

Article 145(3) of the Constitution of India states that at least five judges are required to sit on a case involving the interpretation of the Constitution.

Mr Dhankhar, speaking about Judicial review, said, "Parliament is supreme in lawmaking subject to judicial review. It's a good thing. The judicial review has to be on the anvil that the legislation is in conformity with the Constitution. But when it comes to making an amendment in the Indian Constitution, the ultimate repository, the ultimate power, the ultimate authority, and the last authority is only the Indian Parliament."

He said in this case there can't be any intervention from any quarter because the "will of the people is reflected in a representative manner on the most sanctified platform through elections."

Mr Dhankhar further said the judiciary's public presence must be through judgments as "other mode of expression other than through judgments avoidably undermines institutional dignity".

"When we look around the globe, we never find judges reflecting the way we see here on all issues," he added.

Stressing the importance of dialogue, the Vice President said that democracy gets "thinner" if the right to express is "compromised, or throttled, or diluted".

"One facet of expression is right to vote. But more important is to express your views, your point of view. You participate in governance, and administration, by having a voice of expression. And this expression is not standalone. This expression requires dialogue. Expression without dialogue means my way or no way. Dialogue is nothing but reflection, either approval of your expression or the other point of view," he said.

"A difference of opinion should not result in confrontation. A difference of opinion must ignite an urge in us to converse to find a common ground. And sometimes yielding is a better part of discretion," he added.

"Rubbish": Pietersen Furious After Report Rejects His And Shastri's Claims

England suffered a disappointing 3-0 ODI series sweep at the hands of India on Wednesday. The side failed to challenge the Rohit Sharma-led side in any of the games and its batters looked clueless against the Indian spinners. While talking about the struggle of England batters, former India player Ravi Shastri pointed out that the players have had just one training session during the entire ODI series. Ex-England player Kevin Pietersen also slammed the players of his nation for taking 'disrespecting Indian conditions'.

"From what I've heard, England have had just one net session this entire trip, if not any. If you're not prepared to do the hard yards, you're not going to improve," said Shastri during commentary in third ODI.

Meanwhile, England great Pietersen said, "The 2-hour flight from Dubai across here. He (Tom Banton) was on the golf course yesterday. He wasn't batting, and where have the issues come? The start, 1 for 60, 2 for 80. And then, what happens? None of them can play spin. And how do you improve playing spin?"

After the game, Pietersen revealed that he read an article where a journalist claimed that the England players could not have sufficient training due to injury concerns and the little gap after the T20I series that preceded the ODIs.

Notably, the India vs England T20I series concluded on February 2, while the ODI matches took place on February 6, 9 and 12.

"Just got sent an article where a leading UK journo has said that Shastri & I got it wrong last night when discussing England not training," said Pietersen in a post on X.

"Reason - injuries and quick turnaround between games...!

"Do me a f*****g favour! Stop writing about cricket if you're going to write such rubbish.

"Injuries are part of sport and this schedule is like every bilateral series almost ever played.

"Injuries are NOT stopping batters from batting against net bowlers and learning the art of playing spin. And that's where they should have been to IMPROVE! Trust me on this one as it saved my career against spin!

"It seems the journos are in cahoots with what we're trying to be brainwashed into believing! You won't fool the fan with such!"

Both India and England now head up to the Champions Trophy that is set to kick off on February 19.

'Gutted That You Can Disrespect India': Buttler And Co. Blasted After Loss

England endured a horrific India Tour that ended with a 142-run loss against India in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. With the huge loss, the Jos Buttler-led side were clean-sweeped 3-0 in the ODI series. Before that India won the T20I series as well. Former England star batter Kevin Pietersen blasted England's approach throughout the series. He accused the side of practically not practising at all during the course of the series.

"They had one practice session, the day before the Nagpur game. They had no practice since. Only one batter who had a net was Joe Root. Sorry, but you cannot come to the sub-continent, keep on making the same mistake and then not practice. There is not a single sportsperson who goes into a series and decides 'I am going to get better without practice.' I am sorry. I was flabbergasted when I learnt England hasn't practiced since the first game," Pietersen said after the third India vs England ODI.

"I get it. Enjoy yourselves. These are the best time of your life. Play golf. Go out, eat in a beautiful restaurant. But you get paid to score runs. That is why you get paid. You get paid to win games of cricket. You don't get paid to play golf. This is not a golf tour, this is a cricket tour. You practice so that you leave on a flight tomorrow knowing 'I have given my everything to win a game of cricket for England'. There not one person in that England dressing room that cane get on a plane tomorrow, may be Joe Root is the only one who tried and practiced...not a single player tried.

"I am gutted, that I have to say that you can disrespect Indian conditions and India so much. I am absolutely gutted as an Englishman."

EasyJet Passenger Put In Headlock, Slapped Repeatedly Over Dropped Chips

Tensions boiled over on a delayed EasyJet flight from London Stansted to Amsterdam, resulting in a passenger being headlocked and repeatedly slapped in a shocking incident triggered by dropped snacks.

Videos circulating on social media capture a heated altercation on a flight, where a passenger physically confronted a young man for allegedly dropping crisps and other snacks around his seat.

The incident escalated when another passenger reprimanded the younger man for his untidiness, sparking a verbal dispute. As tensions flared, one of the young man's friends-who was seated behind him stood up in an attempt to diffuse the situation. He could be heard repeatedly shouting, "Calm down, calm down!", raising one hand in a peace gesture while using the other to loosen the angry passenger's grip on his friend's neck.

According to a witness, things took a turn when the younger passengers responded with insults, The Sun reported.

"Then it all got a bit gobby, and the younger lads threw some insults," an eyewitness recounted.

Meanwhile, flight attendants rushed in to de-escalate the situation, and the pilot made an announcement urging passengers to remain calm.

The larger man involved in the altercation was eventually moved to a different section of the plane. However, the incident caused a 30-minute delay, frustrating other passengers, as reported by The Sun.

Another witness weighed in on the dispute, suggesting that the young passengers may have provoked the reaction:

"To be honest, I don't think it was the large guy's fault. I think the kids were making a mess, he called them out, and then they insulted him-which led to a bigger reaction."

The viral video has sparked online debate over who was really at fault, with some siding with the older passenger's frustration and others criticizing his aggressive response.

Palestinians Have No Right Of Return Under Gaza Takeover Plan: Trump

President Donald Trump said Palestinians would have no right of return to Gaza under his US takeover plan, describing his proposal in excerpts of an interview released Monday as a "real estate development for the future."

Trump told Fox News Channel's Bret Baier that "I would own it" and that there could be as many as six different sites for Palestinians to live outside Gaza under the plan, which the Arab world and others in the international community have rejected.

"No, they wouldn't, because they're going to have much better housing," Trump said when Baier asked if the Palestinians would have the right to return to the enclave, most of which has been reduced to rubble by Israel's military since October 2023.

"In other words, I'm talking about building a permanent place for them because if they have to return now, it'll be years before you could ever -- it's not habitable."

Trump first revealed the shock Gaza plan during a joint news conference with visiting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, drawing outrage from Palestinians.

The US president pressed his case for Palestinians to be moved out of Gaza, devastated by the Israel-Hamas war, and for Egypt and Jordan to take them.

In the Fox interview -- which will be broadcast Monday after the first half was screened a day earlier -- Trump said he would build "beautiful communities" for the more than two million Palestinians who live in Gaza.

"Could be five, six, could be two. But we'll build safe communities, a little bit away from where they are, where all of this danger is," added Trump.

"In the meantime, I would own this. Think of it as a real estate development for the future. It would be a beautiful piece of land. No big money spent."

'Unacceptable'

Trump stunned the world when he announced out of the blue last week that the United States would "take over the Gaza Strip," remove rubble and unexploded bombs and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East."

But while he initially said that Palestinians could be among the "world people" allowed to live there, he has since appeared to harden his position to suggest that they could not.

Netanyahu on Sunday praised Trump's proposal as "revolutionary", striking a triumphant tone in a statement to his cabinet following his return from Washington.

"President Trump came with a completely different, much better vision for Israel," said Netanyahu, who was reportedly only briefed on the plan shortly before Trump's announcement.

The reaction from much of the rest of the world has been one of outrage, with Egypt, Jordan, other Arab nations and the Palestinians all rejecting it out of hand.

The criticism was not limited to the Arab world, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday labeling the plan "a scandal," adding that the forced relocation of Palestinians would be "unacceptable and against international law."

Trump's plan has also threatened to disrupt the fragile six-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, and the chances of it progressing to a second, more permanent phase.

Trump, however, repeated his insistence that he could persuade Egypt and Jordan, both major recipients of US military aid, to come around.

"I think I could make a deal with Jordan. I think I could make a deal with Egypt. You know, we give them billions and billions of dollars a year," he told Fox.

Last year, Trump described Gaza as being "like Monaco," while his son-in-law Jared Kushner suggested that Israel could clear Gaza of civilians to unlock "waterfront property."

BCCI Puts Iron Curtain Over Bumrah's Fitness Status. Only Three Know...

India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has recently completed his five-week off-loading and has started his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy even as he races against time to get match-fit for the Champions Trophy. Off-loading is a concept where an athlete is advised complete rest, including staying away from gym work. The BCCI has put an iron curtain on the information coming out of NCA, and save four-five people associated with the centre of excellence and the Indian cricket team, no one else has an accurate information about the pacer's latest fitness status.

However, PTI has learnt about the core team that is working with Bumrah at Bengaluru, as it tries its best to get one of the biggest match-winners of the Indian cricket team back on the park.

For the rehabilitation process of an injured centrally-contracted player, the norm for NCA is to allot one strength-and-conditioning coach, one physio for injury monitoring and a bowling or batting coach to monitor the skills part, which is also a part of Return To Play (RTP).

"Strength and Conditioning (S&C) coach Rajnikanth Sivagnanam and physio Thulasi Ram Yuvraj are currently working on Bumrah's rehabilitation with Head of Sports Science, Dr Nitin Patel, personally monitoring the whole process.

"Obviously, the national team S&C coach Soham Desai and physio Kamlesh Jain are also kept in the loop," a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity.

There were some social media reports that Bumrah is working with Desai at NCA but the latter is travelling with the Indian team for the ongoing series against England and is also expected to head to Dubai as part of the support staff for the Champions Trophy.

If and when Bumrah is allowed to bowl, it is expected that Troy Cooley will be monitoring that part, and the final report prepared by Patel about his availability will be sent to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma will also be notified about Bumrah's status.

While the BCCI can straightaway name Harshit Rana as Bumrah's replacement if he fails to get ready in time, it is expected that the team would wait till last moment in order to get him ready for the marquee ICC event.
