How Dravid Has Created 'Safety Net' For 14-Year-Old Vaibhav Suryavanshi

"My mother died and I couldn't handle the circumstances. Just that," Sadanand Viswanath's voice suddenly became emotional as his co-passengers in a second AC train compartment, which included an American tourist, a cricket reporter and a young businessman, heard in rapt attention. It was a journey from Gwalior to Delhi after the completion of a Ranji match and Viswanath, then a domestic umpire, got talking about his brief but eventful international career of three Tests and 22 ODIs. His finest hour was a stumping of Javed Miandad off another teenage prodigy Laxman Sivaramakrishnan's bowling.

'Siva' (then 18) and Viswanath (22 at the time) crash-landed on the TV screens of Indian drawing rooms during the spring of 1985 and before the autumn of 1986, the talented duo had fallen by the wayside.

They were "kids" back then, who perhaps needed a supportive shoulder and people around them to provide sane advice.

More than a decade later, Vinod Kambli, after back to back Test double tons, suddenly lost his way and stories of indiscipline, instead of his rasping slashes over point, flew around at speed of knots.

Perhaps, none of them had a well-intentioned man of honour and integrity like 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi has in Rajasthan Royals' head coach Rahul Dravid.

Bihar Cricket Association president Rakesh Tiwary, along with the Rajasthan Royals management, Dravid and Vaibhav's father Sanjiv, are trying to create a safety net around the teenager, whose life has changed after becoming the youngest ever centurion in IPL's history.

"Rahul Dravid sir has taken Vaibhav under his wings and he has spoken to his parents and also BCA president Rakesh Tiwary ji. Vaibhav's parents have been told to pay heed to any advice that comes from Dravid sir regarding the development of their child.

"He has a special talent and well-intentioned people need to do their bit in order to help Vaibhav realise his full potential," a Bihar CA official, who has closely monitored Suryavanshi's growth, told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

WV Raman, one of the most respected coaches, who has worked a lot with India U-19s, tried to put things in perspective.

"He is a baby and he knows no fear. This is just the start," Raman told PTI, adding: "Suryavanshi ripped all the manuals that dealt with traditional batting approaches to smithereens in Jaipur." But Raman believes that for the kid to flourish, it would be important that the family, especially the parents, have their feet rooted to the ground.

"He is 14 and there will be decisions that his parents will take for him and those decisions will be very important," Raman said.

Sivaramakrishnan believes that with a massive support system available, Suryavanshi need not worry unlike their era when he and Maninder Singh had no one to talk to about technical issues that cropped up in their game.

"Batters are much easier to guide. To guide a bowler, you need thinkers. Me and Manni (Maninder Singh) were straight out of school when we played against Pakistan and West Indies as 16 and 17-year olds.

"We had just come after the quartet of spin greats. Cricket wasn't still a full-time profession and there was no technical support or knowledge," he recalled.

When a former first-class cricketer, who has worked at the NCA and extensively handled young cricketers in franchise universe, was asked about how can Suryavanshi be protected, he had several insights to offer.

"You want to protect Suryavanshi? Frankly speaking, you can't because that's the nature of the beast. He is 14 and he will make mistakes and through trial and error know what is right.

"There is a 'Shubman Gill Highway' and a 'Prithvi Shaw ByLane'. He will have to choose the road he traverses and obviously parents will have a role," he said.

After the IPL, Suryavanshi will have to go to NCA (COE) U-19 camp, where he will enter as a "star", who has hit Mohammed Siraj and Ishant Sharma out of the park.

"And for all you know, kids are kids and they can be brats. And why not? But will coaches at COE be in awe of him or give him the freedom required while working on his game?" he wondered.

He then gave some practical inputs.

"If you say Rahul Dravid will look after him round the year, that's a impractical. Rahul is a team coach and not private coach like Abhishek Nayar, who has the mandate to decide every aspect of Angkrish Raghuvanshi's career.

"Let me give you a more direct example. Suppose a well-intentioned man gets a an agency to manage Vaibhav, for say 20 crore guarantee for four years plus endorsements.

"But then another agency reaches his parents with a Rs 40 crore deal, what happens then?" he forces one to ponder.

He then goes on to explain in detail, the many other distractions that would be at play as Suryavanshi grows.

"After 60 days with RR, he is on his own. There would be local politcians, who would order him to come for functions and stand on dais to get photographs. He has at least 14 support staff working for him at RR, five to six may be in Bihar and another 10 at ZCA/NCA (COE).

"Add parents and agents, there are 45 people directly and indirectly involved in decision-making and trust me 40 of them would be useless. But can those five, who are ready to think critically, get that freedom? The Suryavanshi Success story lies somewhere in between these aspects," he pointed out.

Influencer Misha Agrawal Died By Suicide Days Before Her 25th Birthday

Social media influencer and cosmetics brand founder Misha Agrawal died by suicide just two days before her 25th birthday, her family has confirmed. Six days after her death, Misha's sister took to Instagram to share an emotional post about the young influencer's mental health struggles. "Her phone wallpaper says everything. Her only aim of life," she wrote, referring to Misha's dream of reaching one million Instagram followers. At the time of her death, Misha had over 3.5 lakh followers.

The family said Misha became deeply depressed after seeing a drop in her followers. "She built her world around Instagram and her followers. When they started decreasing, she felt worthless," her sister shared. Despite her family's efforts to reassure her and remind her of her other achievements - including a law degree and judicial studies - Misha reportedly struggled to separate her self-worth from her online presence.

"Instagram is not real life and followers are not real love. Please try to understand this," her sister urged in her post.

The initial announcement of Misha's death came on April 26, the day she would have turned 25. "We are still trying to come to terms with this immense loss," the family said in a statement shared on her social media accounts.

Misha, who also ran a cosmetics business called Mish Cosmetics, was known for promoting hair care products and beauty tips on her platform. Her brand page also confirmed her passing and assured customers that pending orders would still be fulfilled.

"Should Not Shower Suryavanshi With...": Dravid's Blunt Take On Wonderkid

Rahul Dravid doesn't want microscopic attention on 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi following his path-breaking hundred in the IPL but having said that, the Rajasthan Royals head coach knows it is something that he can't control. Having received a barrage of questions on Suryavanshi in the Star Sports Press Room on Wednesday, Dravid realised that the cricketing world will not be leaving the talented teenager alone from now onwards. The Bihar teen will have to find a way to handle this overnight stardom, he said.

In the interaction, the former India head coach also touched upon Suryavanshi's special skills that make him a formidable T20 batter at such a young age before adding that he remains very much a work in progress.

"I think it won't be possible to completely sort of avoid him from the experience that is around him. I can't control what people are talking about him. I have come to this interaction and all I have heard is questions about Vaibhav," said Dravid when asked about protecting the youngster from the hysteria around him.

"It is going to be challenging for him but it is exciting at the same time. I would love to say that we should not shower him with that much attention. Maybe I am being naive as that it is not going to happen.

"Recognising that it happens and putting a certain level of support around that and navigate that attention and allow him space to be a youngster. It is part of being a cricketer in this country, it is impossible to distance yourself from and (you tend to get) sucked into it."

Amazed by his quick judgement of length and fearlessness

As the India U-19 coach, Dravid nurtured the likes of Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Prithvi Shaw, Yashasvi Jaiswal and many more exciting talents. Asked about Suryavanshi, Dravid explained what makes him special.

"For me it is really the ability to have that level of fearlessness and not get fazed by the occasion. You don't get to see that with people that young. The range of shots he showed.

"He is only going to get better. Nobody is saying that he is a finished article. No one should rush to call him somebody he is not. Teams will be smarter against him. T20 format is such where he will have games where it will not work out," he cautioned.

Suryavanshi's six-hitting ability also stands out. He cleared the ropes 11 times in his 35-ball hundred against a potent Gujarat Titans attack.

"What gives him power is a good bat speed, high backlift, hand-eye coordination. His judgment of length is something that has amazed me, whether it is fractionally short or full, he can capitalise on that. His natural strength is helpful in this situation," said the Indian great.

A video clip of Suryavanshi was shown during the interaction where he was seen praising Dravid for making him a better cricketer over the past three months. The moment the footage ended, Dravid played down the role played by him in his rise.

"The biggest credit goes to him. It would be wrong of me to take credit for him. He has come through a system (having played first class and India U19.

"His father has been supportive. Here in Rajasthan Royals, so many people have been involved...he will be asked Dravid questions and he has to give a diplomatic answer," the former India captain said with a smile.

"We try to keep it simple with him. For us, it is important that he plays the kind of cricket he enjoys playing...It is pretty obvious he likes to play attacking brand of cricket. We picked him not keeping his age in mind, we were convinced of his talent," he added.

As the 2025 season unfolds, new names have entered the record books alongside some of the game's biggest legends.Vaibhav Suryavanshi's entry into this elite list at just 14 years of age is particularly noteworthy and is being hailed as one of the biggest stories of IPL 2025. Leading the list is Chris Gayle, who blazed to an unbeaten 175 off just 66 balls for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors India in 2013. Gayle reached his century in just 30 deliveries, a record that still stands as the fastest century in IPL history. Also Read: Vaibhav Suryavanshi smashes IPL's second fastest 100, rewriting history books at just 14 years of age Joining the elite list this season is 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who smashed a 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans. His blistering innings broke multiple records and announced the arrival of a rare young talent on the big stage. LIVE: Who Will Be Canada's New PM- Liberal Carney Or Conservative Poilievre

Canadian Election 2025 LIVE: Canadians are set to vote today (Monday) to decide whether to extend the Prime Minister Mark Carney-led Liberal Party's decade in power or hand over the country's control to Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives. The initial results of the poll race will start coming after 7:30 pm EST (5:00 am IST), after voting ends in the four Atlantic provinces. The clear picture will emerge after 9:30 pm EST (7:00 am IST), when voting ends in most of the country, including in seat-rich Ontario and Quebec.

This time, Canadians are not just electing their next Prime Minister, but the polls are also seen as a referendum of sorts on someone who isn't even Canadian-- US President Donald Trump. The Liberal Party looked set to lose easily to the Conservatives until Trump won a second term and began threatening Canada's economy and sovereignty, even suggesting the country should become the 51st state.

The American President's truculence not only infuriated many Canadians but also put Poilievre and the Conservative Party on the back foot due to his similarities with Trump.

Forty-five-year-old  Poilievre is a career politician who campaigned with Trump-like bravado. During campaigning, he tried to keep the focus on domestic concerns that made Trudeau deeply unpopular toward the end of his decade in power, especially soaring living costs.

However, final polls indicate a tight race, but Carney has emerged as a favourite. Carney, 60, has never held elected office and had a lucrative career as an investment banker before serving as the central bank governor in both Canada and Britain. He only replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister last month.

But, surveys have consistently shown voters view the ex-central banker as the best candidate to deal with Trump.

If the Liberals win today, it would mark one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Canadian political history. Public broadcaster CBC's poll aggregator on Sunday put the Liberals' national support at 42.8 per cent, with the Conservatives at 38.8 per cent.

Rishabh Pant Handed More Bad News Amid Poor IPL Form, Punished By BCCI For...

Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant was on Sunday fined Rs 24 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his team's 54-run loss to Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. "As this was his team's second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pant was fined INR 24 lakhs," the IPL said in a release. "The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser." Mumbai Indians scored 215 for 7 and then bowled out LSG for 161 to record their fifth consecutive victory in the IPL.

Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants mentor and former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan on Sunday exuded confidence that express pacer Mayank Yadav's bowling speed will improve as he plays more matches in the IPL.

The right-arm tearaway pacer Mayank made his comeback after a long injury layoff. He had to deal with issues related to his back and toe after making his India debut in the shortest format in October last year.

On Sunday, Yadav returned with figures of 4-0-40-2, accounting for Mumbai Indians mainstays Rohit Sharma (12) and Hardik Pandya (5) but bowled in the range of 140kmph, a few clicks down from the earlier highs of 150-155kmph in the past.

“The wait was long and for anyone who is playing after so many months to get back into the game, (it) is always that one hurdle which one needs to cross as a bowler,” Zaheer told the media after LSG lost the game to MI by 54 runs here.

“I am happy with the way he has bowled. It's important that he had to get through the game.

“He stayed on (for) the (full) 20 overs. He has bowled four overs. The execution is only going to get better. The speed is only going to get better as he plays more, that's the way I am looking at it.” Zaheer explained the process of Mayank's return, saying LSG were cautious to not rush him through processes and wanted to create a conducive environment around him.

“Even though he had joined the team, we were taking our time just to create that comfort around him. I know that fast bowling is never easy, especially in this format when the batters are coming so hard at you. So, that was the thought process,” he said.

“I am glad that he has got through the game. That one hurdle is crossed, I am hopeful that with the scheduling which we have, there will be enough breaks also for him to recover and then go again."

DOJ says awaiting India's response on Adanis

Mumbai: The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice (DOJ) are awaiting India's response to a request seeking assistance to serve notices on Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani in a securities fraud and bribery case, according to a status report of the case filed in a New York court. The SEC in February sought help from India's Ministry of Law & Justice to serve 'Notices of Lawsuit' (informing the parties about the filing of a lawsuit) and 'Requests for Waiver of Service of Summons' (requesting the defendants to voluntarily receive legal documents) on the Adani Group chairman and his nephew. The assistance was sought under the Hague Service Convention, which facilitates legal cooperation in cross-border cases. The ministry had "confirmed" receiving the request and directed "relevant judicial authorities in India to attempt to serve" them."In advance of this status report, the SEC sought additional updates from the India MoLJ concerning service but has not received a response," SEC counsel Christopher M Colorado said in his April 25 status report, reviewed by ET.The Ministry of Law & Justice did not respond to a request for comment till press time Saturday. The report, addressed to Magistrate Judge James Cho, said the SEC counsel has identified the counsel representing Gautam Adani and sent the 'Notice of Lawsuit' and 'Request for Waiver of Service of Summons' to the counsel. "To date, neither defendant has agreed to waive service of the summons and complaint," it said.ET reported that the Adani Group had appointed US legal firms Kirkland & Ellis and Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan to deal with this matter.

'Fearing Future Without Babies', Students 'Race' Sperm In Los Angeles

A commentator yells excitedly as hundreds of spectators stand glued to a video of a racecourse -- but the athletes they are rooting for are actually tiny sperm cells.

The unusual sport was invented by 17-year-old high schooler Eric Zhu, who raised over a million dollars to organise the event to call attention to male infertility.

Zhu said he was inspired by social media posts that claim average sperm counts had halved over the past 50 years.

Fearing that "there could be this dystopian future where no one will be able to make babies," Zhu said he wanted to use the competition to highlight the importance of reproductive health.

Scientists have not reached a consensus on whether humanity has experienced a dramatic drop in sperm count, with studies showing conflicting results.

At the Los Angeles event on Friday night, a man in a lab coat used pipettes to place samples of semen -- collected from contestants ahead of time -- onto tiny two-millimetre long "tracks."

The race track was magnified 100 times by a microscope, then filmed by a camera that transferred the image to a 3D animation software before the final video was broadcast to the audience.

"There's no way to really tell if this is real, but I want to believe it is," Felix Escobar, a 20-year-old spectator, told AFP.

At the end of the brief race, the loser, 19-year-old University of California student Asher Proeger, was sprayed with a liquid resembling semen.

'Not Elon Musk'

Zhu's fears about fertility echo the talking points of many in the burgeoning pro-natalist movement, which include conservative and far-right political figures.

But Zhu distanced himself from the movement.

"I have nothing to do with this, I'm not like an Elon Musk, who wants to repopulate the Earth," the young entrepreneur told AFP.

Musk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, has been vocal about his belief that population decline threatens the West and has fathered over a dozen children with multiple women.

Zhu insisted he simply wanted to raise awareness of how sperm quality goes hand in hand with overall health.

"It's your choice to sleep earlier. It's your choice to stop doing drugs. It's your choice to eat healthier, and all these different things have a significant kind of impact on your motility," Zhu said.

Shanna Swan, a reproductive epidemiologist at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, co-authored a study that found the sperm count decline cited by Zhu.

She said the proliferation of "hormonally active chemicals" in recent years has had a negative impact on human fertility.

But beneath the scientific veneer, the sperm race may seem more like an opportunity for college students to display their adolescent humor and participate in a viral stunt.

Some attendees dressed in costumes, including one resembling male genitals, while the hosts made lewd jokes and roasted the competitors.

A YouTube livestream of the event attracted over 100,000 views.

"I can't say I learned stuff I didn't know before," 22-year-old student and audience member Alberto Avila-Baca told AFP.

After Clash With Zelensky, Trump Says 'Crimea Will Stay With Russia'

The recent interview with US President Donald Trump by TIME magazine has caused debate regarding the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014. Trump stated that "Crimea will stay with Russia” as part of potential peace negotiations with Ukraine, adding that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky understands this reality.

The Crimean peninsula has been a point of contention between Ukraine and Russia for years, with Russia annexing the region in 2014. Trump's comments suggest that he believes Crimea's fate is already sealed, with Russia maintaining control over the region. He pointed out that the people of Crimea largely speak Russian, implying that this demographic factor contributes to the region's ties with Russia. However, he also took a swipe at his predecessor, Barack Obama, saying, "But this was given by Obama. This wasn't given by Trump."

Zelensky has consistently maintained that recognising occupied territory as Russian is a red line for Ukraine, and Trump's comments may be seen as an attempt to push Ukraine towards negotiations.

In contrast to his comments on Crimea, Trump has also criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin for continuing to assault Ukraine. In a statement, Trump said, "I am not happy with the Russian strikes on KYIV. Not necessary, and very bad timing. Vladimir, STOP! 5000 soldiers a week are dying. Let's get the Peace Deal DONE!"

In response, Zelensky pointed out on Thursday that Ukraine had accepted a US ceasefire proposal 44 days ago as the first step toward peace talks, but Russian attacks have continued.

Trump also said that Ukraine will never join NATO and added, “From day one, that's what caused the war to start—talks of NATO membership".

Speaking to reporters Friday as he left the White House to attend the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, Trump said there is no deadline for the conclusion of peace talks.

“I just want to do it as fast as possible,” Trump said. Negotiators are “pretty close” to a deal, he said.

Sehwag Gives Big Warning To Suryavanshi, It Has A 'Virat Kohli' Twist

Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, becoming the youngest player to play in the tournament. The 14-year-old made a sensational mark in his very first innings, smashing a six off his first ball. But while he made a 20-ball 34 in his first knock, he could manage just 16 off 12 in his second match, against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Legendary former India opener Virender Sehwag has advised Suryavanshi to keep his feet on the ground and not get carried away by fame, as well as take inspiration from Virat Kohli.

Sehwag warned Suryavanshi to remain grounded and accept criticism regarding his game, regardless of fame.

"If you step out knowing that you will get praised for doing well and criticised for not doing well, you will remain grounded. I have seen many players who come, get fame from one or two matches, then they do not do anything, because they think that they have become a star player," Sehwag stated, speaking on Cricbuzz.

Suryavanshi has appeared to struggle against spin and variations in his two innings so far, picking up a couple of boundaries through edges, and often mistiming his big shots.

Sehwag has urged Suryavanshi to take inspiration from Virat Kohli and aim to play in the IPL for the next two decades, instead of getting carried away by fame and hype.

"Suryavanshi must aim to play 20 years in the IPL. Look at Virat Kohli, he started playing when he was 19 years old, now he has played all 18 seasons. That is what he should be trying to emulate. But, if he is happy with this IPL, thinking that he is now a millionaire, had a great debut, hit a six off the first ball, maybe we won't see him next year," Sehwag added.

Suryavanshi, at the age of 13, was picked up by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2025 mega auction for Rs 1.1 crore, making him the youngest player to ever be sold at an IPL auction.

Under the guidance of Rahul Dravid, Suryavanshi has the perfect platform to be developed in the IPL at Rajasthan Royals. However, RR haven't had a great IPL 2025.

Three games in a row, Rajasthan Royals have ended up losing in a run chase despite being in a winnable position. Having lost seven of their first nine matches, RR are all but out of contention for the playoffs.

'Hamas Leaders Visited PoK': Israel Envoy On Link With Pak-Based Lashkar

Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, today compared the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam to the October 7, 2023 Hamas strike on Israel, citing similarities in their targeting of civilians and warning of growing coordination among terrorist groups.

"The terrorists are collaborating at all levels and trying to be copycats of each other. I am sure the intelligence agencies are working together to defeat them," Mr Azar told NDTV.

Referring to the killing of tourists by Pakistan-linked terrorists in Pahalgam, he drew parallels to the Hamas-led assault that killed over 1,400 people in Israel.

"Unfortunately, we must confess, these terrorist groups are inspiring each other. There are similarities between the Pahalgam attack and what happened on October 7 (2023) in Israel. Innocent tourists were enjoying their vacation in Pahalgam, while in Israel, people were celebrating a music festival," he told news agency PTI.

He linked the Pahalgam attack's timing to the recent visits by Hamas leaders to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), where they reportedly met with Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists and a few others, suggesting possible coordination.

The Israeli ambassador praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to the Pahalgam attack, particularly his speech at a gathering in Bihar's Madhubani today, where he promised to "hunt down" those responsible for the killings.

"I'm very encouraged by not only the strong condemnation but also the strict measures taken by the Indian government," Mr Azar told PTI Videos, referring to India's diplomatic moves, including the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 with Pakistan and immediate shutting down of the Attari land-transit post in view of the cross-border links to the attack in Pahalgam.

Mr Azar asked the global community to expose state sponsors of terrorism, emphasising that the problem extends much beyond individual terrorists.

"Terrorism has to be exposed because terrorists enjoy a series of deeds by countries that supply money, intelligence inputs and weapons (to them), which is unacceptable," he said.

India today said it had suspended visa services "with immediate effect" and ordered all Pakistani nationals to leave the country, with the exception of remaining diplomats. Experts say a military response may still be in the pipeline, with some speculating that a response may come within days while others say weeks.

Pakistan also held a rare national security meeting today after New Delhi's punitive diplomatic measures.

The killings have shocked India because they were a dramatic shift targeting civilians and the area's vital tourism industry, rather than more common smaller-scale attacks against security forces.

Hindu pilgrims have been targeted in the past, but direct attacks on the tourist trade that underpins much of the local economy are much rarer.

EV cab service BluSmart co-founder Puneet Jaggi has been detained from a hotel in Delhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a case linked to Gensol Group, another company that he co-founded.

The ED also searched properties of Gensol in Delhi, Gurugram, and Ahmedabad, sources said. The action came in a case under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), they said.

Mr Jaggi had been staying in the Delhi hotel for the last one week, sources said.

Power Finance Corporation filed a complaint with the Delhi Police and the Economic Offences Wing some days ago, sources said, adding Mr Jaggi's brother Anmol Jaggi is in Dubai and has not yet returned to India.

This ED investigation began on the basis of a report by the capital markets regulator SEBI, which alleged fund diversion, transfer of money to shell firms, share price manipulation, and running personal expenses from loan funds.

Sources said the ED may start a fresh investigation for alleged money laundering.

The ED has traced the wives of the Jaggi brothers in Pune, and they are likely to be questioned too, sources said.

Watch: Kishan's Huge Brain-Fade, Walks Off Despite Being Not Out vs MI

Ishan Kishan had a massive brain-fade moment during SunRisers Hyderabad's IPL 2025 match against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on Wednesday. The incident was so bizarre that the commentators said that they had not seen anything like this. It happened on the first ball of the third over. Deepak Chahar's delivery angled down the leg side and was caught by wicketkeeper MI Ryan Rickleton. Everything seemed normal, but just then Ishan Kishan started walking off. He, however, stopped mid-way. Just then the MI players enquired for a catch. The umpire who had his hand partially raised, gave Kishan out.

And then, the UltraEdge replay showed there was no edge!

Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya won the toss and elected to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Wednesday. The match is being held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Heading into the clash, Mumbai Indians are placed sixth on the points table with eight points from eight matches, having secured four wins and an equal number of losses. In contrast, Sunrisers Hyderabad find themselves at the ninth spot with just four points, managing only two victories in their seven games so far.

Both captains took a moment to express their condolences to the victims of the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam that occurred on Tuesday.

Addressing the incident, MI captain Hardik Pandya said, "Feels good (on the applause). I would like to first pass my condolences to the victims of the terrorist attack. We, as a team and a franchise, condemn any such attacks."

On the game, he added, "We'll bowl first tonight. Looks like a good track. Just one change for us -- Vignesh comes in for Ashwani. We need to just execute our plans and take the game as simply as possible, plan properly."

Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Pat Cummins also expressed sorrow over the attack, stating, "It has been heartbreaking for us as well, our thoughts are with the victims and their families."

Talking about the game, Cummins said, "One change for us -- Jaydev comes in, Shami goes out to the impact player list. It is a cause for optimism, we know this surface and ground really well. We've played some really good cricket this year."

As the teams square off in a crucial mid-season encounter, both sides will be eager to grab the two points on offer and improve their standings in the tournament.

Woman's Throat Slit, Ankles Cut Off Over 2 kg Silver Anklets In Rajasthan

A woman was found dead in a field on Sunday morning with her throat slit and both her ankles severed from the body in Rajasthan's Sawai Madhopur district. The chopped-up body parts were found in a nearby pond. The reason for the murder was allegedly two thick silver anklets, or kada, on the woman's feet.

The 50-year-old woman was wearing two-kg silver anklets on her feet, which the accused looted and fled, police said.

On Sunday morning, Urmila Meena left her morning to go to the field to cut wood. When she did not return till 11 am, the family started looking for her. They informed the Bamanwas police station upon finding her body in the farmland.

The murder sparked protests in the village, with the villagers blocking a road by placing the woman's body on it. The angry villagers sought the arrest of the people behind the murder within 24 hours.

The police tried to convince the villagers and the family members to unblock the road, but the villagers remained adamant about their demand.

The police said that they need at least three days for investigation, while the villagers demand that the accused be arrested within 24 hours. The villagers have warned that they will not move from the road until the accused are arrested.

Actor Disha Patani's Sister Climbs Wall To Save Baby In Abandoned Building

An abandoned infant, about nine to 10 months old, was rescued from a dilapidated structure by Bollywood actress Disha Patani's sister, Khushboo Patani here on Sunday morning, police said.

Khushboo Patani climbed over a wall to save the baby, they said.

The child was found near Disha's Bareilly residence where Kushboo stays with her father, retired police circle officer Jagdish Patani. Her brave act is being widely appreciated in the city.

According to Circle Officer (City-I) Pankaj Srivastava, Khushboo was out for a morning walk when she heard the cries of the baby from an abandoned building nearby.

"There was no direct access to the structure, so she took the courageous step of climbing over a wall to reach the spot. Inside, she found an infant lying on the ground, crying and with visible injuries on the face," Srivastava said.

She immediately brought infant home and administered first aid.

The family then informed the police about the incident. The child was later admitted to the district hospital, where treatment is ongoing, police said.

Police have begun checking CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify who abandoned the child.

"Efforts are underway to trace those responsible for leaving the baby in such a condition," Srivastava added.

On Defeat To RCB, PBKS Coach Ponting Namedrops 'Kohli' In Blunt Admission

Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting was disappointed with his team's batting effort against Royal Challengers Bengaluru as he felt that the strip was far better than the 157 it managed during the seven-wicket defeat in an IPL game on Sunday. Virat Kohli anchored the chase with an unbeaten 73 while Devdutt Padikkal contributed 61 as RCB won with seven balls to spare.

"I think the wicket was a whole lot better than 157. We had a lot of batsmen make starts, not go on and make those big scores, and that's crucial in T20 cricket, especially guys at the top of the order. And that's the difference," Ponting said at post-match press conference after his team's last game at the venue.

Ponting urged his team to take a leaf out of Kohli's book and learn how he capitalised on a good start.

"Virat bats through tonight, sees his team home, and we weren't good enough to capitalise on a good start. I think at the end of the power play we were 62 for 1, pretty much where you'd want the game to be.

"So straight away there you're looking at a score of 180 plus, even pushing on to 200 if your middle order bat well, but we lost wickets in clumps again tonight, which is not first time in a tournament," Ponting seemed a bit concerned.

Ponting lauded RCB spinners Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya and also felt that Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood were brilliant between overs 17 to 20.

"I thought their spinners bowled well, and their death bowling was exceptional at the end. Bhuvi and Hazelwood, the four overs that they bowled at the end, we still thought we could get to near 180, but their death bowling was too good and we struggled to 157.

"Unlike the last game here, where we dragged a win from nowhere, we weren't good enough to do that tonight."

We had four different strips in four games

Ponting feels that there was no uniform nature of the strip at Mullanpur and the variety meant that the team needed to adjust each time it played a home game.

"One thing we know about it, it doesn't offer a lot of pace and it doesn't offer a lot of bounce, and we talk about that. And to be honest, the four games we've played here, each wicket's been slightly different, so it just takes you a little bit of time to adjust." Punjab Kings now have a six-day break and Ponting would like to go back to the drawing board before the team plays Kolkata Knight Riders next.

"We've got a nice little break, we've got about a six day break now, which on the back of I think three games in about five days," the legend said.

"The boys need that little bit of a freshen up, time to get away, forget about this result and make sure we focus on our next challenge, which is KKR down there, which we know will be a big game for us."

Gurdwara Vandalised With Pro-Khalistan Graffiti In Canada's Vancouver

A gurdwara in Canada's Vancouver was vandalised overnight with pro-Khalistan graffiti. The incident accused at the Khalsa Diwan Society or KDS gurdwara in Vancouver, better known as the Ross Street gurdwara. Images shared on the official account gurdwara administration showed the word "Khalistan" spray-painted in multiple places on the wall surrounding the parking lot of the sikh temple.

According to Canadian media reports, the Vancouver Police Department is investigating the incident that occurred on Saturday morning, the same day that the largest Vaisakhi parade in the world took place in Surrey. The Khalsa Diwan Society had held its Vaisakhi parade in Vancouver last weekend prohibited pro-Khalistan groups from participating in the event.

Later, in a statement, KDS said, "A small group of Sikh separatists, advocating for Khalistan, defaced our sacred walls with divisive slogans like 'Khalistan Zindabad'."

It said that it "mourns a painful moment in our community's history as we gather to celebrate Khalsa Sajna Diwas-a day that symbolizes the strength, unity, and resilience of Sikhs."

"This act is part of an ongoing campaign by extremist forces that seek to instill fear and division within the Canadian Sikh community. Their actions undermine the values of inclusivity, respect and mutual support that are foundational to both Sikhism and Canadian society."

KDS added that extremists are undermining the dreams and sacrifices of their elders," who worked tirelessly to create a strong, thriving community in a country that celebrates diversity and freedom."

"Their actions seek to divide us, contrary to the unity and peace we hold dear as Canadians. We cannot-and will not let these forces of division succeed," it added.

Gurdwara spokesperson Jag Sanghera told CTV News the vandalism was "extensive."

The Ross Street gurdwara was established in 1906.

Mumbai Civic Body Transfers Official After Row Over Jain Temple Demolition

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday transferred an assistant municipal commissioner after the demolition of a Jain temple in Vile Parle area of the city sparked a controversy.

Members of the Jain community took out a protest march over the issue earlier in the day.

Navnath Ghadge, who was in charge of the K-east ward, has been transferred with immediate effect, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani told PTI.

A team of K-east ward on April 16 demolished a Jain temple or 'chaitalaya' located inside Neminath Cooperative Housing Society, claiming it to be an unauthorised structure.

A protest march was taken to the ward office on Saturday. Paresh Shah of the Maharashtra Gaushala Sangh claimed that more 20,000 people including religious leaders and Maharashtra minister Mangal Prasad Lodha, local BJP MLA Parag Alavani and a few other political leaders participated in the march.

A delegation of protesters submitted a memorandum of demands and had a two-hour-long meeting with Mr Ghadge, he said.

"The entire Jain community is anguished by the BMC's action," said Mr Shah, demanding that the civic body suspend the officer. The temple was demolished without giving the trustees time to respond, he claimed.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and city MLA Aaditya Thackeray said the BMC was being fully and directly controlled by the Chief Minister's Office and Urban Development Minister's office, suggesting that they were to blame for the incident.

The Urban Development department is headed by deputy CM Eknath Shinde who heads the rival Shiv Sena.

"Who was guardian minister (Lodha) protesting against? What he is doing is drama instead of saving the Derasar (temple) using his powers as guardian minister! "He has an illegal office in the BMC itself, and has a huge experience of real estate and such cases. Instead of protecting the Derasar, now he is doing the drama of a protest. I hope everyone realises - the BJP belongs to nobody. It is the BJP govt that is running the BMC through the CM's office," Mr Thackeray alleged.

MP and Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad, who participated in the protest march, claimed BMC officials demolished the temple without waiting for the court's ruling.

The idols of Jain Tirthankars and religious texts were also "insulted" during the action, she alleged, blaming the "bulldozer government of the BJP alliance" responsible for the "conspiracy." She spoke to BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani who assured that a new temple will be built at the same place.

Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar accused the BJP government of "targeting the minorities". "It is wrong to demolish a structure without giving a proper notice. Action should be taken against the officials involved in this, " he said.

22-Year-Old Tricked Into Marrying Bride's Mother, 45, In UP

A man was allegedly tricked into marrying the mother of his 21-year-old bride here, police said Saturday.

The complainant, Mohammad Azeem (22), a resident of Brahmapuri in Meerut, said that his wedding was arranged with Mantasha from Shamli district by his brother Nadeem and his wife, Shaida.

The wedding took place on March 31 and during the ceremony, the Maulvi referred to the bride as Tahira. Upon lifting the veil, he discovered that Mantasha's 45-year-old widowed mother, disguised as bride, had gotten married to him, instead of Mantasha, police said.

He claimed that Rs 5 lakh had been exchanged during the ceremony.

Azeem told the police that when he protested against the fraud, his brother and sister-in-law threatened to falsely implicate him in a rape case.

He then filed a complaint on Thursday, police said.

CO Brahmapuri Saumya Asthana said, "A settlement has been reached between the involved parties. Azeem has withdrawn his complaint and indicated that he does not wish to pursue any legal action at this time."

University Professor Claims Assault By Troops In J&K, Army Orders Probe

The Indian Army on Friday ordered an inquiry after a university professor accused the troops of assaulting him during the checking of vehicles at a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, officials said.

Police have also registered an FIR against unidentified army personnel, they said.

Former chief minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti condemned the incident and said “such individuals tarnish the reputation of a respected institution through their unacceptable and high-handed behaviour”.

The professor, Liaqat Ali, suffered head injuries in the alleged assault near the border village of Laam late on Thursday night. A video purportedly showing the bleeding professor has surfaced online.

“An incident has come to light wherein certain individuals were allegedly manhandled by army personnel in Rajouri district. The army had inputs on the likely movement of terrorists in a vehicle in this sensitive area. Accordingly, search operations were being conducted.

“Preliminary information suggests that on being stopped, the individual tried to snatch weapons from the soldiers on duty, with whom he got into a scuffle. However, an inquiry has been initiated. Should any personnel be found guilty of misconduct, strict action will be taken in accordance with the existing law,” the army said in a statement in Jammu.

It said the army remains steadfast in upholding the highest standards of professionalism and discipline in the conduct of counter-terror operations.

“All sections of society are requested to continue to cooperate and collaborate with the Indian Army for collective and comprehensive security in this sensitive area,” the statement said.

The alleged incident took place when Mr Ali and some of his relatives, including his cousin brothers serving in the army and ITBP, were returning to Kalakote after attending the pre-wedding ceremony of one of their relatives.

Officials said an FIR under Sections 126(2) dealing with crime of wrongful restraint and 115(2) -- voluntarily causing hurt -- of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) was registered at the Nowshera police station against unidentified army personnel for a thorough investigation.

Mr Ali, a professor at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) posted in Delhi, wrote a post on X claiming he was "assaulted" without any reason.

“My entire family is in the army. I've always been proud of that. Proud of the uniform, the service, the sacrifice. But today, what I experienced shook that pride to the core. Without any reason, without any question, I was assaulted -- hit on the head with a weapon by the very people I once trusted blindly," Ali said in the post that also had a picture showing him bleeding.

“It made me realise one terrifying truth: if the system chooses to, it can 'encounter' any human being -- without evidence, without trial, without justice. There's no apology that can undo this wound. Only one haunting question remains -- has justice now become the privilege of the uniform alone?” the professor wrote.

Mr Ali got nearly half-a-dozen stitches to close his wound, besides undergoing necessary tests at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu.

“I was sitting inside the vehicle when army personnel came and asked for my identity. I came out of the vehicle as a matter of respect to show my identity card, but they started beating me with their weapons,” the professor told reporters.

He said he saw his younger brother, who is in ITBP, also knocked to the ground along with him.

“The army is our country's pride… I want nobody to be treated like this and justice be given to me,” Mr Ali said.

Mehbooba Mufti, in a post on X, urged the army to take immediate and strict action against those responsible for this “shocking incident”.

“Such individuals tarnish the reputation of a respected institution through their unacceptable and high-handed behaviour,” she said.

Former J-K BJP president Ravinder Raina assured the professor of justice and said “law of the land is supreme and nobody in India is above the law. Whosoever made it happen, have to face the consequences...”

IPL, world's biggest cricket league, turns 18

The inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) season was held in 2008, a year after the first T20 World Cup, and has since grown into a global cricketing phenomenon. It has led to a kind of revolution in the shortest format of the game, also giving overseas players a chance to experience Indian conditions.Eight city-based franchises took part in the first edition, Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Rajasthan Royals (RR), Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), and Deccan Chargers (DCH). Deccan Chargers were replaced by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in 2013. Rajasthan Royals won the first IPL trophy. The tournament made an instant impact, blending competitive cricket with entertainment to capture the imagination of fans in India and beyond. The opening night set the tone when Brendon McCullum lit up the M. Between 2016 and 2017, CSK and RR were suspended for two seasons due to a betting scandal, with Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) and Gujarat Lions (GL) stepping in as replacements but they had to go as CSK and RR made their return in 2018. In 2022, the league expanded again with the addition of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Gujarat Titans (GT).CSK (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, 2023) and MI (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020) are the most successful franchises in IPL history, each with five titles. Sehwag's 'Jane Ka Time Aa Gaya' Take Turns Prophetic As Rohit Fails Once Again

Former Indian cricket team batter Virender Sehwag was extremely critical of Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians star continued to struggle for runs in the ongoing IPL 2025. Rohit, who came into the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad with 56 runs in five innings, was dismissed for 26 by Pat Cummins. Rohit's dismal run has resulted in a lot of criticism from both experts as well as fans and Sehwag warned him that he needs to safeguard his legacy. Sehwag pointed out that he has just one 400-plus run IPL season and even hinted that it is time for Rohit to retire from the format.

“If you look at Rohit's IPL numbers in the last 10 years, he scored more than 400 runs only once. So he is not the kind of player who thinks that I need to score 500 or 700 runs. If he thinks, he might. When he became the Indian captain, he said that he wanted to be the player who wants to cash in on the powerplay and take the chances, so he wanted to make all the sacrifices alone, but he is not considering the fact that at the end of the day when he is not performing, it is your legacy that is getting hurt. Ab uska jaane ka time aagaya, (It's already time for him to retire), and before retiring, you would want to give fans something to remember you by, and not moments that force them to think, why are they not dropping him,” he said.

Rohit looked in good touch once again but was dismissed after playing a loose shot against Cummins.

“Take 10 balls extra, but at least play and give yourself a chance. He has been getting out to that pull shot many times against the back of the length deliveries. So he should decide that in one innings he will not play the pull shot at all. But who will explain it to him? There should be someone telling him to play normal cricket. When I was there, Sachin, Dravid or Ganguly used to tell me to play normal cricket,” he added.

Global uncertainty will hit growth: WB Prez

The uncertainty kicked up by Donald Trump's stop-start tariff rollout will undoubtedly hit growth, the president of the World Bank said Wednesday, ahead of next week's semi-annual meeting of global financial leaders in Washington."Uncertainty and volatility are undoubtedly contributing to a more cautious economic and business environment," Ajay Banga told reporters, alluding to the market turbulence unleashed by the new US administration's tariff policy. This uncertainty would "certainly" cause slower growth than previously anticipated, he added during the virtual event. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Spring Meetings kick off on Monday, with the Bank keen to promote its agenda to drive job creation in developing and emerging market economies. But the gathering of finance ministers and central bankers will take place against a challenging international backdrop, with US President Donald Trump's tariff policy threatening to derail economic growth in many parts of the world.Since taking office in January, the US president has imposed 25 percent levies on several sectors including, autos, steel and aluminum, as his administration seeks to redress what it says is an unfair trading relationship with the rest of the world. The White House also imposed a new "baseline" tariff of 10 percent on most countries, and announced higher import taxes on dozens of trading partners, only to then temporarily roll many of them back. China -- America's third-largest trading partner -- has been hit with a barrage of new tariffs totalling 145 percent overall. Beijing, in turn, has announced retaliatory tariffs of 125 percent on US goods.- 'The right questions' - The United States is the top shareholder at the World Bank Group, and has historically been a key driver of policy at the Washington-based institution, which has been led by a US citizen for most of its history.Shortly before leaving office, Joe Biden's administration committed the United States to $4 billion in new funding for the World Bank's agency that leverages donor funds to provide loans and grants to some of the world's poorest countries. The Trump administration has so far refused to commit to that $4 billion figure, raising questions about how much money it plans to contribute to the World Bank and other international financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Speaking on Wednesday, Banga indicated that the Bank would make do with a smaller budget if the United States did not provide funding at the same level as before, but that he still hoped Washington would come around. "We're having a constructive dialogue with the US administration," he said. "I don't know where it'll end, but I've got no problem with the dialogue I'm having.""They're asking the right questions, and we're trying to give them the right answers," he added. - Nuclear, gas financing -Donald Trump has a long public record questioning the impact of man-made climate change. Since his return to office, concerns have been raised that his administration's view on climate change could hit the World Bank, which has committed to increasing its climate finance portfolio to 45 percent of total lending. Banga told reporters on Wednesday that, while "the words might be a problem in different people's eyes," the Bank's climate actual commitments should be less controversial. "We are not taking away from education and schools and development to fund something," he said. "What's inside the 45 (percent) is a commitment that half of it, over time, will go to resiliency and adaptation."Banga also suggested that the Bank could soon take another look at funding nuclear and natural gas energy projects -- something that would require approval from donor countries. "There is no reason why a country in Africa should not care about affordable, accessible electricity," he said. "And it includes gas, geothermal, hydroelectric, solar, wind and nuclear where it makes sense," he added.

How Italy's Meloni May Save Europe From Trump Tariffs As All Others Fail

Italy's PM Giorgia Meloni will fly to Washington to speak with US President Donald Trump regarding tariffs on Europe. The tariffs will potentially be a lethal blow to Italian exporters.

However, her counterparts from Europe feel she may be the only European leader Trump might be willing to listen to, since Trump had said that she is "a fantastic leader and person", when he invited her to this inauguration ceremony in January. Other European leaders have tried to change the US President's mind through various means - flattery, threats or promises to buy more American gas, but the talks reached nowhere.

Currently the European Union has three months to convince Trump not to slap 20 per cent duties on all its exports to the United States, apart from the baseline 10 per cent tariff with another 25 per cent on steel, aluminium and autos.

As Meloni speaks to Trump on Thursday, it is Europe's opportunity to show that they can still do business with the US. Moreover she herself thinks that Trump can be reasoned with and that his trade threats are just a negotiating tactic, per two Italian officials familiar with the government's political stance.

"Having Trump's ear is an asset for the entire European Union," an Italian official told Politico, underlining Meloni's "ideological affinities with the world of American conservative right-wing politics."

It's worthwhile to note that Italy has the third-largest trade surplus with the US as compared to other EU countries, standing at 40 billion euros. Its top exports are machinery, pharmaceuticals, vehicles, fashion, and food and beverages.

Nevertheless, there is a separate fear brewing in Europe. French President Emmanuel Macron warned that Trump's ultimate goal is to divide EU countries and force them to make bilateral deals with the US. French Industry Minister Marc Ferracci reacted to Meloni travelling to Washington saying Europe needed to stay united.

German politicians are also hopeful. "Meloni's trip to Washington right now is an important signal," said Johann Wadephul, from the likely next chancellor, Friedrich Merz's Christian Democrats. "The Italian prime minister has a good connection to U.S. President Trump, which she can now put to the service of Europe."

"Politics, like life, is built on personal relationships," said Marco Scurria, an Italian senator from Meloni's Brothers of Italy party. "It's better when such a complex negotiation is handled by two people who respect each other and can more easily reach a positive outcome - unlike with von der Leyen (the head of the European Commission)."

March retail inflation falls to over 5-year low

India's retail inflation declined to 3.3% year-on-year in March, lowest since August 2019, driven by a fall in food prices, official data released Tuesday showed. This marks a drop from 3.6% in February and the second straight month of inflation remaining below the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% target. The decline follows the RBI's monetary policy committee (MPC) decision to cut the policy rate by 25 basis points to 6%. Experts anticipate additional rate cuts this year, potentially bringing the repo rate down to 5.50%."The high base effect has helped to moderate the inflation numbers and this comfort will be there for the next 3-4 months," said Madan Sabnavis, chief economist at Bank of Baroda.120320355On a fiscal year basis, inflation declined to 4.6% in FY25 from 5.4% in FY24.Last week, the central bank revised its inflation forecast for FY26 to 4% from 4.2% earlier."Sustained seasonal correction in food prices led to the moderation in headline inflation in March. The declining trend, however, was not uniform as fuel & light and core inflation saw an upswing in the same period," said Paras Jasrai, associate director at India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra).Fuel & light inflation stood at 1.5% in March year-on-year.While rural inflation fell to 3.3% in March from 3.8% in February, inflation in urban areas rose to 3.4% from 3.3% in the same period.Among the 36 states and Union Territories, Kerala recorded the highest inflation of 6.6%, followed by Karnataka (4.4%), Chhattisgarh (4.3%), Jammu & Kashmir (4%) and Maharashtra (3.9%)."There are signs of demand picking up as reflected from the rising core inflation," noted Jasrai.Core inflation rose to a 16-month high of 4.1% year-on-year in March."This was driven by increases in precious metals, transport and education," said Radhika Rao, executive director and senior economist at DBS Bank.Food, servicesFood inflation dropped to over a three-year low of 2.7% in March. Overall, it eased to 7.3% in FY25 from 7.5% in FY24."Food inflation fell in March due to corrections in prices of vegetables and pulses," said Jasrai.Vegetable inflation declined by 7% year-on-year in March, while pulses prices were down by 2.7%."A rise in temperatures going ahead could raise prices of perishables in the coming weeks. While the initial forecast of an above normal monsoon is encouraging, the timing and distribution will be key for the implications for agricultural output and food inflation going ahead," said Aditi Nayar, chief economist at ICRA.Oils and fats saw the steepest rise among food items at 17.1%. Next was fruits at 16.3%."Edible oil will continue to exert pressure as it is determined by international prices as well as exchange rate," said Sabnavis.

"Pakistan Played A Double Game With Taliban": S Jaishankar On Terrorism

Pakistan got caught in its own web of deceit when its was double-crossing the Taliban and the other side, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said today, as he spoke about how Pakistan lost its way in Afghanistan, only to be trapped in its own creation of terror.

Speaking at the Charotar University of Science and Technology in Gujarat, the foreign minister said, "Pakistan was playing a double game. It was with both the Taliban and also with the other side. But, when the Americans left, the double game could not be sustained."

Noting that it was Pakistan that set up the entire terrorism "industry" in the region, Dr Jaishankar said, "Whatever benefits they were getting out of the double game, that also went down (after the US left Afghanistan). Moreover, the very terrorism industry they (Pakistan) had promoted came back to bite them."

He pinpointed the 2008 Mumbai terror attack as the "turning point" from where relations between India and Pakistan went south, and never recovered.

"Indians collectively felt that such behaviour from a neighbouring country could no longer be tolerated," he said speaking about the Mumbai terror attack, adding that "That feeling was very very strong in Indian society, but it may not have been entirely understood at that time by the Government at that time, which is a different matter."

Highlighting the contrast in the journey of both nations, especially in the last ten years, Dr Jaishankar said, "India has changed. I wish I could say Pakistan has changed too. They unfortunately, in many ways, are continuing their bad habits."

"After 2014, when the government changed in India, Pakistan was given a firm message that there will be consequences if acts of terrorism are committed," Dr Jaishankar said, adding that "During this period, we (India) have grown economically and politically, and our standing in the world has improved. But, Pakistan continued the old playbook."

But India has now surged ahead, he said, adding that there is no need for Indians to "waste precious time" on Pakistan.

The foreign minister's remarks come days after 26/11 Mumbai terror attack plotter Tahawwur Rana was extradited to India by the United States. Both countries have a special special and privileged partnership and have been cooperating on intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism.

After Rana's extradition, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said, "We extradited Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India to face charges for his role in planning the horrific 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks. Together, with India, we've long sought justice for the 166 people, including 6 Americans, who lost their lives in these attacks. I'm glad that day has come."

To this, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had replied, "Appreciate the counter-terrorism cooperation between our two countries. This is indeed a big step in ensuring justice for the victims of 26/11 attacks."

Oil prices unlikely to hit 2015-16 low: BPCL

Oil prices are unlikely to fall dramatically to the levels seen in 2015-16, which benefited India immensely, as uncertainties around US tariffs are likely to clear in two-three months, and producers may resort to supply cuts to arrest a free fall in prices, said the finance chief of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).These are "good times" for oil marketing companies, BPCL director-finance Vetsa Ramakrishna Gupta told ET in an interview, referring to the large cash generation and margin boost that lower crude prices bring. Despite US sanctions, Russian oil is "still more commercially viable" than others, and BPCL is facing no issue in sourcing it or paying for it, he said. Oil prices are likely to stay in the $60-65 per barrel range for the next two-three months and may inch to the $65-70 range after the tariff uncertainties fade, Gupta said. The baseline tariff issue between the US and major countries is likely to be resolved during this period, he said. Recent tariff declarations of more than 100% by the US and China on each other's goods are just "tactical moves" ahead of negotiations, Gupta said. "Without US, China cannot survive. Without China, the US cannot survive," he said, adding that the two countries will have to strike a deal. The current uncertainties are "sufficient" to disturb demand, which is weighing on oil prices, Gupta said. He, however, ruled out a repeat of the price crash witnessed in the past decade when crude prices plunged to below $30 in early 2016 from above $100 per barrel in the middle of 2014, benefitting Indian refiners, consumers and the government handsomely. Benchmark Brent averaged $44 in 2016, down from $52 per barrel in 2015."I don't think the price will fall down drastically. If prices fall to $50-55 level, automatically production cuts will happen," Gupta said, adding that producer cartel OPEC will be the first to cut supplies.

Dhoni Takes Reluctant DRS After CSK Pacer's Request. This Happens Next

Dhoni Review System made a comeback in IPL 2025 after MS Dhoni took a reluctant DRS after fast bowler Anshul Kamboj's request to dismiss Nicholas Pooran during the IPL 2025 encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Lucknow Super Giants on Monday. On the final ball of the 4th over, Pooran was beaten by a delivery from Kamboj that crashed into his pads. While the on-field umpire was not convinced, Kamboj was confident and after a bit of discussion, Dhoni went for the review with a smile. The replays showed that the ball was hitting the stumps as Pooran's innings came to an end for 8.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the 30th match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, here at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium.

CSK have made two changes, Ravichandran Ashwin and Devon Conway miss out as Sheik Rashid and Jamie Overton replace them. For LSG, Mitchell Marsh returns to the playing XI, but Himmat Singh misses out.

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni said, "Well blessed, we get good support. Thank you all the fans. We want to bowl first, there's chances of dew here. The wicket gets better. It's important to set the right temperament. We haven't been consistent with our batting. With the ball we have strong back strong. It's important to have a positive mindset, play those big shots. It's a matter of time. We have a couple of changes."

Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant said, "It's just amazing. We would have bowled first. In Lucknow it's slower in the first innings, gets better gradually. The only thing we talked about CSK is that we don't want to give them an opening, just need to give our 100%. We want to go out there and play good cricket. Only one change - Marsh comes back in for Himmat Singh."

NPCIL explores JV model for N-power plants

New Delhi: Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has received interest from other central public sector undertakings (PSUs) for jointly developing nuclear power plants. Indian Oil Corporation, which already has a joint venture with the nuclear power producer Neyveli Lignite Corporation, and the Indian Railways have shown a willingness to join the bandwagon, said NPCIL chairman and managing director Bhuwan Chandra Pathak. Many states are also interested, particularly in having a minor stake in such a project.120261284"We are going to have tie-ups, maybe with other central PSUs also. They are interested. We already have a joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation. We need to operationalise that as there is growing interest now," Pathak told ET.States are interested in minor stakes and that would be the best model for NPCIL because to set up a nuclear power plant, a very strong support from the state government is needed, he said."In some way, if they (states) are connected with us, it will be of great help to us, so we are also interested," Pathak said.Of the company's 50 GW target by 2047, around 30 GW will be from pressurised heavy water reactors, 24 GW will be based on light water reactor technology."Anyhow, we are prepared to have our reactors also. Our technology of 700 MW is well established and proven," he said. "We have the infrastructure, and we can multiply it."The company's current focus is to achieve 22 GW by 2031-32. Of the reactors included in the 22 GW plan, three are operationalised, while 17 are under different stages of implementation, Pathak said.NPCIL last month connected 700 MW Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP) unit 7 with the grid which was a major milestone for the company and the third unit in the series of 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors.RAPP unit 8 is expected to be commissioned in this financial year, Pathak said, adding that the unit is in an advanced stage of commissioning."Next year onwards commissioning of Kudankulam under-construction units will start progressively," he said.Four units of Kudankulam nuclear power plants are under construction, having a total capacity of 4,000 MW.
