Helped Boost Ties: PM In Letter To Tarique Rahman After Khaleda Zia's Death

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his condolence letter to Tarique Rahman - the son of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the acting chairman leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party - recalled his association with her and expressed hope that the people of Bangladesh, who have shown "remarkable strength and dignity throughout their history... will continue to be guided by their shared values, democratic traditions, and a deep sense of national unity".

PM Modi's letter was delivered today by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who represented India at the funeral of Khaleda Zia.

Expressing his condolences in the letter, PM Modi had said, "I warmly recall my meeting and discussions with Begum Sahiba in Dhaka in June 2015".

"She was a leader of rare resolve and conviction and had the distinction of being the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She made many important contributions to the development of Bangladesh, as well as to the strengthening of India-Bangladesh relations," he wrote.

"While her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, her vision and legacy will endure," PM Modi added. "I am confident that her ideals will be carried forward under your able leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and will continue to serve as a guiding light to ensure a new beginning and the enrichment of the deep and historic partnership between India and Bangladesh," he wrote.

Zia, the three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh who headed the BNP, died on Tuesday after a long illness. Her funaral today was attended by thousands, including dignitaries from various nations. She was laid to rest with full State honours this afternoon beside her husband, the country's former President Ziaur Rahman, at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.

Rahman, a front-runner for the prime minister post in the election due on February 12, is Khaleda Zia's eldest son.

During his meeting with Rahman, Jaishankar acknowledged Zia's contribution to democracy. He also expressed optimism about closer India-Bangladesh ties -- which have been frayed since the government led by Mohammad Yunus came to power -- after the elections due in February. Dhaka's growing closeness with Pakistan and its all-weather ally China lately has been a situation that is being closely watched by India.

Shreyas Iyer Suffers Rapid Weight Loss, Won't Return For ODIs vs New Zealand

Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a serious spleen laceration while attempting to take a diving catch during an India vs Australia ODI in October, will not return for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. The series starts on January 11. He has not received clearance from the BCCI. He can bat but has not regained the strength to be on the field. According to a report in TOI, Iyer has rapidly lost weight (around 6 kg) due to the injury, as there has been a drop in muscle mass.

On Sunday, media reports claimed that if Shreyas's recovery goes as planned, he is likely to play two Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai on January 3 and 6, before linking up with the Indian team in Vadodara ahead of the three-match ODI series against the Kiwis.

However, a BCCI source told NDTV that Shreyas's participation in the three-match ODI series, as well as the Vijay Hazare Trophy games, will depend on whether the batter can cope with the physical rigours of a 50-over game following abdominal surgery.

"Shreyas Iyer has started skill training this week. He is in good shape. But we will have to assess his ability to field in a 50-over game before putting him back on the park. Depending on how he pulls up, his participation in the Vijay Hazare will be decided," a BCCI source told NDTV.

Shreyas suffered a serious spleen laceration while attempting to take a diving catch off Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. Subsequent scans at a hospital in Sydney revealed internal bleeding that required immediate hospitalization and intensive care.

He underwent a minor surgical procedure to control the bleeding and was closely monitored by local medical specialists in Australia and India, including the Indian team doctor, before his condition improved and he flew back home.

Bangladesh Radical Group Asks Yunus To Cancel Work Permit Of Indians

The radical organisation Inqilab Mancha has asked Bangladesh's interim government to cancel the work permits of all Indians in the crisis-hit country, local media reported today.

The organisation that is today spewing venom against the same neighbour that liberated Bangladesh from Pakistan, was formed by radical leader Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, 32, who died after a headshot by masked assassins earlier this month.

The radical organisation, silent on the attacks on Hindu minorities happening across Bangladesh and ignoring the dog-whistling that it has been doing, in a comical move even asked the US-returned Muhammad Yunu's interim government to take India to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The radical organisation's request comes even as Bangladesh descends deeper into chaos ahead of the general election scheduled in February 2026.

Analysts have raised concerns that there are signs of Bangladesh becoming critically intolerant of democratic institutions and processes, and radical groups may derail any semblance of stability in desperation for power before the election.

India has not given a statement on the radical organisation's openly hostile request to Team Yunus.

Everyday, Bangladesh authorities have been giving statements blaming India for all the ills that's befallen their country, while ignoring the radical Islamists who have taken hold of their country's democratic organs and radicalised the population.

The police in Bangladesh yesterday again alleged the two key suspects in the murder of Hadi fled to Meghalaya in the northeast. India has already debunked Bangladeshi propaganda that tried to pin the murder on the bigger neighbour. Yet, the police in Bangladesh gave a comment on it again, only to find themselves looking ridiculous with their claims.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) in a statement last week said India categorically rejects the assertions made by the interim government of Bangladesh in its press note dated December 14 about the attack on Hadi.

India Gets 7 New Unicorns: Startups That Became Worth $1 Billion In 2025

India added seven new unicorns to its kitty this year. The startups that achieved the valuation of $1 billion in 2025 focus on artificial intelligence (AI), financial technology, consumer goods, and lifestyle.

Three startups, Jumbotail, drools, and JSW ONE MSME, were valued at $1 billion while fintech firm Navi was worth $1.7 billion, as per startup data platform Tracxn. AI.TECH was worth $1.5 billion, and fintech companies Justpay and Raise were worth $1.24 billion and $1.2 billion, respectively.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Seven startups had turned unicorns in 2024 as well.

Out of the seven, three were fintech companies, though their characteristics and functions were different.

Juspay works mostly behind the scenes as a technology provider for digital payments, helping apps and online businesses process transactions smoothly through tools like payment orchestration and checkout systems. It isn't a consumer app-its main goal is to make online payments faster and safer for big companies.

On the other hand, Navi is a super-app for everyday users, offering services such as instant personal loans, health insurance, investments, UPI payments, and even home loans in one place. It focuses on making financial services simple, affordable, and fully digital for people across both cities and smaller towns.

Meanwhile, Raise, through its platform Dhan, is built for people who want to trade or invest. It provides fast, advanced tools for stock trading, options trading, and market research, attracting both active traders and long-term investors looking for a powerful, technology-driven platform.

AI startup AI.TECH was founded by serial entrepreneur Divyank Turakhia in 2022 and achieved a $1.5 billion valuation without any external funding. It focuses on building and scaling businesses powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning. It operates global AI-driven businesses, including Advertising.tech and Media.net, employing over 1,600 people worldwide.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Jumbotail is a fast-growing B2B marketplace for kirana stores, connecting small retailers with FMCG and grocery suppliers through a full-stack platform offering wholesale procurement, supply-chain services, and embedded credit. The company's model combines digital commerce, warehousing, logistics, and MSME-focused financial services, positioning it as a major disruptor in India's kirana-led retail ecosystem.

Dog food and supplement manufacturer Drools also joined India's unicorn list after Nestle acquired a minority stake. It is one of India's largest home-grown pet food companies, offering 650+ products across brands like Pure Pet, Meat Up, and Canine Creek, and distributing through over 40,000 retail outlets while exporting to a number of countries.

JSW One MSME is a tech-led B2B e-commerce and procurement platform built to serve India's construction and manufacturing MSMEs by offering seamless sourcing of steel, cement, and industrial materials along with integrated logistics and credit solutions. In May 2025, it became a unicorn valued at $1 billion after raising Rs 340 crore.

Jagannath, Durga, Mahakal: BJP Fumes Over Mamata Banerjee's Temple Projects

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced today that Salt Lake, near Kolkata, will host the world's largest Durga Angan -- a gesture to highlight the UNESCO's "cultural heritage" tag for Durga Puja. The opulent 4.5-acre premises she is planning -- coming on the heels of the Puri Jagannath temple replica in Digha -- has drawn barbs from the BJP, which accused the state government of "appeasement politics" again.

At the foundation stone-laying ceremony of Durga Angan in New Town today, Banerjee said the Durga Angan will be able to accommodate one lakh visitors a day, and expressed hope that it would catapult Bengal from the second to the first spot in the country in terms of tourism.

"Durga Puja was recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. At the Durga Angan, the culture and spirituality of Bengal will come together. For millions of tourists, it will represent the culture, tradition, and spirit of unity of Bengal," she said.

The plans for the premises include an extensive green area with 300 trees and 1,000 flowering plants and a 20-ft-wide road for horses. The structure will have 1,008 pillars, a 54-metre sanctum sanctorum, 108 idols of various deities and 64 statues of lions.

"Along with the main temple, a singha dwar, a pradakshin path, and a pavitra kund will be built. Temples dedicated to Shiva, Ganesha, Kartik, Saraswati, and Lakshmi will also be constructed. A kitchen for preparing prasad will be built, along with a cultural museum," she said.

"In 2025, West Bengal was in second place in terms of receiving foreign tourists. In 2026, we will be number one. When the Durga Angan grows into a religio-cultural hub, it will boost local industries and tourism and, in turn, increase employment," she said, citing the growing economy around the Jagannath temple in Digha.

With the approaching state elections, the plans have irked the BJP, which said the Chief Minister has shifted the site from the one originally proposed because of protests from the minority community.

A group of Muslim residents had protested the original site in New Town, claiming that the land was acquired from Muslims and continued to be "Muslim-origin land", the BJP's Amit Malviya said in a statement.

Following the protests, the Chief Minister had "panicked and abruptly halted work," despite contracts having already been awarded to "Trinamool Congress-linked contractors" under what he described as "familiar cash-back arrangements".

"After making a spectacle of the Messi event, Mamata Banerjee has now turned her gaze to defiling the sanctity of Maa Durga. Her so-called Durga Angan project is steeped in appeasement and fakery, the very hallmarks of her politics. It mocks the faith and beliefs of Bengali Hindus, reducing devotion to a cynical exercise in vote-bank management," claimed Malviya, who is also the BJP in-charge for Bengal.

Banerjee, though, remained unruffled. "Many people blame me for appeasement politics," she said. "I am a true secularist. I believe in the peaceful coexistence of all religions. You can't show me a religion whose celebrations I don't attend. I cover my head when I visit Gurudwaras. Why do you complain when I attend Rozas? Every religion has its cultural practices. How can I disregard any of them?" she added.

She also declared that the Puri temple and the Durga Angan are not the only projects the state has undertaken.

"First, we built the skywalk in Dakshineswar. Rs 100 crore was given for development. We also built the light and sound system there. We have built the skywalk in Kalighat. We have beautified the Kapil Muni ashram in Gangasagar. The entire cost of the Gangasagar mela is borne by us. Nobody gives a penny," she said.

When Swami Vivekananda's home on Shimla Street was about to be handed over to promoters, she took over and handed it to the Vivekananda Trust, she said.

"I also convinced the GTA to hand over the house where Sister Nivedita passed away to the Ramakrishna Mission... People couldn't go past Maa'er Bari (the house of Sarada Devi, the wife of Sri Ramakrishna)... Now, people can easily access the area, as we have cleaned the space and provided homes under Banglar Bari to the poor in the area. Everyone is happy," she added.

'Took Arshad Warsi Seriously,' Fans After Watching The Raja Saab Trailer 2.0

Prabhas has once again set the internet abuzz with his looks in Maruthi's upcoming entertainer, The Raja Saab. A brief yet striking shot at the end of trailer 2.0 has sparked widespread discussion, with fans convinced that the actor has cleverly responded to Arshad Warsi's controversial "joker" remark from 2024.

In the closing moments of the trailer, Prabhas appears in a dark suit, his head lowered, gripping a massive hammer. As he lifts his face towards the camera, viewers see white face paint with colourful markings, bearing a resemblance to Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. The moment has left fans reading deeper meaning into the visual.

Fans Link Prabhas' Joker Look To Arshad Warsi's Remark

The striking Joker-inspired appearance instantly drew comparisons to Arshad Warsi's podcast statement last year about Prabhas' portrayal in Kalki 2898 AD. Many online users believe the actor has now turned the criticism into a bold visual statement.

An internet user wrote on X, "#RajaSaab makers took Arshad Warsi's Statement too seriously #Prabhas is like a Joker man."

Another commented, "Finally, he has accepted that he is The Joker. Hats off to The Visionary Arshad Warsi #TheRajaSaab will break Jawan, Pushpa 2 record for sure."

A third reaction read, "When Arshad Warsi Said Prabhas, You looked like a Joker, Prabhas fans went crazy, Now he himself showed himself as Joker. Nobody trolls them better than man himself."

Yet another user posted, "Arshad Warsi was absolutely right-Prabhas truly looks like a Joker,"

What Arshad Warsi Actually Said About Prabhas In 2024

The conversation traces back to August 2024, when Arshad Warsi appeared on Samdish Bhatia's podcast and shared his disappointment with Prabhas' character in Kalki 2898 AD. He said, "Prabhas, I am really sad, why was he... he was like a joker. Why? I want to see a Mad Max. I want to see Mel Gibson over there. Tumne usko kya bana dia yaar. Kyu karte ho aisa mujhe nahi samajh mein aata."

The remark triggered backlash from fans, prompting Arshad to clarify that he was criticising the character design and not the actor.

Speaking to ANI later, he explained, "Everybody has their own point of view, and people like to interpret noise. I spoke about the character, not the person. He (Prabhas) is a brilliant actor, and he has proved himself again and again, and we know about it. And, when we give a bad character to a good actor, it's heartbreaking for the audience."

Despite the clarification, the debate has now resurfaced following The Raja Saab trailer 2.0.

The Raja Saab is slated for a grand Sankranthi release on January 9, 2026. Directed by Maruthi, the film also stars Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani, Malavika Mohanan, and Nidhhi Agerwal.

Watch: Group Of Monkeys In Odisha Risk Lives To Save Companion From Crocodile

A group of monkeys in Odisha made a valiant attempt to rescue a companion from a saltwater crocodile. The incident, captured on camera, occurred in the Mahakalapada area of Kendrapara district.

The footage shows a large troop of monkeys swimming in a straight line towards the crocodile, trying to save their companion. The region's rivers and rivulets, including the Kharinasi tributary of the Mahanadi, are known for frequent crocodile sightings, which often pose a threat to wildlife and occasionally humans.

According to eyewitnesses, a crocodile suddenly attacked and dragged one of the monkeys into the river. Instead of fleeing, several other monkeys jumped into the water and chased the predator in an attempt to rescue their friend. Despite their determined efforts, the crocodile overpowered the group, and their companion could not be saved.

Crocodiles are commonly seen across Odisha, especially around Bhitarkanika National Park, home to India's largest saltwater crocodile population, and coastal areas such as Astaranga and Chandrabhaga near Puri. Recent floods have also forced them into villages.

In October, a 57-year-old woman went missing after a crocodile dragged her into the Kharasrota river in Odisha's Kantia village while she was bathing. Villagers attempted to rescue her but she couldn't be saved. Fire brigade personnel and police launched a search operation in the river following reports of the incident. A video showing the crocodile dragging the woman went viral on social media.

Crocodiles often appear near human settlements due to a combination of habitat overlap, environmental factors, and food availability. Many villages and towns border crocodile habitats, naturally bringing humans and reptiles into proximity. Heavy rains and floods can push crocodiles out of their usual areas in parks and rivers into nearby villages. Crocodiles follow water bodies and prey, which often leads them toward rivers, coasts, and other areas frequented by people.

Household debt to be part of FY28 GDP data

NEW DELHI: India will factor in the findings of its next nationwide household debt and investment survey into GDP estimates for the year ending March 2028, highlighting the role of household balance-sheet data in measuring investment in the economy, a government official said. The All-India Debt and Investment Survey (AIDIS), scheduled between July 2026 and June 2027, is a key input for estimating gross fixed capital formation, or GFCF - a core component of GDP that tracks spending on assets such as housing, land and durable goods."Data from AIDIS 2026-27 will be incorporated into the 2027-28 GDP estimates," the official said."We will examine how its findings can be incorporated into the new series to enhance relevance," the official added. The survey, which collects information on household assets and liabilities, will be conducted every five years, ET reported earlier. The last round was carried out in 2019, and its findings are widely used in compiling national accounts and benchmarking investment estimates. The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is in the process of revising India's GDP base year and updating data sources. A new GDP series, with 2022-23 as the base year, is due to be released on February 27, 2026, replacing the current 2011-12 series.126218817Under the revised framework, benchmark estimates for dwelling repair and maintenance costs are based on AIDIS 2019, compared with AIDIS 2013 used in the existing series. In line with the System of National Accounts, GFCF is compiled across multiple asset categories, including dwellings, other buildings and structures, machinery and equipment, cultivated biological resources and intellectual property products. AIDIS data are used to estimate household-sector investment and also feed into intellectual property product estimates.MoSPI will conduct AIDIS alongside the Situation Assessment of Agricultural Households survey as part of the 81st round of the National Sample Survey (NSS).

For the series against South Africa, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been named captain, with Aaron George being his deputy. It is worth noting that 14-year-old Suryavanshi has been given the big charge as regular skipper Ayush Mhatre misses out on the series due to a wrist injury. "Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra have sustained wrist injuries and will miss the South Africa tour. The duo will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for further management of their injuries and will join the team for the ICC Men's Under-19 World Cup," informed BCCI in a release.

Mumbai Star Labelled 'Rohit's Doppelganger' As Viral Pic Stuns The Internet

A viral photo from Wednesday's Vijay Hazare Trophy match between Mumbai and Sikkim in Jaipur sent social media into a frenzy. In the picture, veteran batter Rohit Sharma was seen standing next to Mumbai teammate and wicketkeeper-batter Hardik Tamore behind the stumps. Fans were quick to label the wicketkeeper as Rohit's doppelganger due to the uncanny resemblance in their facial features, as well as their similar bearded looks. Social media erupted with fans suggesting that Tamore looks "more Rohit Sharma than Rohit himself."

Here's how internet reacted:

Hardik didn't get the chance to bat against Sikkim as Rohit stole the show with a sensational century on his return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after seven years. The former India captain made a mockery of an inexperienced Sikkim bowing attack with a 94-ball-155 as Mumbai cruised to an eight-wicket victory at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

Rohit's carnage included 18 fours and nine sixes with Mumbai chasing down a target of 237 in just 30.3 overs. He had two partnership, one that yielded 141 runs for the opening stand with Angkrish Raghuvansi (38 of 56 balls) and another 75 with debutant Musheer Khan (27).

Around 20,000 fans were in the stands to witness Rohit's knock, while those who couldn't get in climbed nearby trees to catch a glimpse of him.

"Burning Minorities Alive": Sheikh Hasina Attacks Yunus Regime In New Address

Amid spiralling violence against minorities in Bangladesh, ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in a Christmas speech, has attacked the Yunus regime and said that the "current ruling group" has seized illegal power and is now subjecting minorities to "unspeakable torture".

On the occasion of Christmas, Hasina started her speech by extending greetings to citizens and reminded them that in the past, Bangladesh had always been a "shining example of communal harmony".

"The father of the nation dreamed of a non-communal Bangladesh. Bangladesh Awami League has ensured the smooth living of people of all religions to realise that dream," Hasina reminisced.

However, citing the current political climate, she noted, "It is sad to say that the current ruling group that has seized illegal power is interfering with the freedom of people of all religions and communities to practice their own religion."

Her address comes at a time when the atmosphere in Bangladesh is already charged following the lynching of factory worker Dipu Chandra Das, who was accused of blasphemy by a co-worker in Mymensingh. His body was then hanged and set ablaze.

Regarding the lynching of minorities, she highlighted that non-Muslims are "subjected to unspeakable torture" under the current regime. She added, "It has also created examples of atrocities such as the burning of religious minorities."

She concluded the speech by saying that she believes that the "people of Bangladesh will not allow this difficult time to continue" and that the Christmas spirit will strengthen the harmony between Christians and other religions in Bangladesh.

"May dawn break through the darkness," she added.

Another Hindu man has been beaten to death in Bangladesh, days after Dipu Chandra Das was lynched and his body was set ablaze, local media reported on Thursday.

Local residents told Bangladeshi media outlet The Daily Star that Samrat was the leader of a criminal gang, called the 'Samrat Bahini', which was involved in extortion, among other activities. Samrat had fled the country after Sheikh Hasina's ouster last year and had returned to his village, Hosendanga in Kalimohor Union, recently.

Shimla Doctor Who Thrashed Patient On Camera Sacked

A doctor of a hospital in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla who was seen on camera thrashing a patient has been removed from his post, sources said. The government took the decision to sack him after going through the report of the investigators, they said.

The police in Shimla had filed a first information (FIR) report against Dr Raghav Nirula, who was seen on camera assaulting the patient on a hospital bed.

The complainant Arjun Singh, 36, alleged that during a routine round, Dr Nirula questioned him about his admission and medical papers. Due to his medical condition and oxygen shortage, Singh said he was unable to respond appropriately, which led to an argument over the doctor's manner of speaking.

Singh alleged the doctor became "aggressive, threatening and repeatedly punched him on the face and body, causing bleeding from the nose and mouth and injuries to different parts of his body."

Today, the patient, wearing an oxygen mask, told reporters that he was thankful for setting an example with the doctor's removal from his post.

"I woud like to express my thanks to the government for taking this exemplary step," he said.

The incident happened in Shimla's Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) on December 22. Singh said he was undergoing treatment for a lung infection. He was taken to the pulmonary block for tests, and was kept on a bed for observation for two hours due to breathing difficulties and low oxygen levels.

Singh alleged that while Dr Nirula was kicking and punching him, another doctor held his legs so that he could not defend himself. He said the oxygen pipe attached to him broke during the assault, putting his life at risk. The video was recorded by Singh's brother.

"... The undersigned do hereby terminates the services of Dr Raghav Nirula from the post of Senior Resident, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, IGMC Shimla..." the Himachal Pradesh Directorate of Medical Education and Research said in the order.

A police team came after the patient dialled 112. The case has been filed against Dr Nirula and another unidentified doctor, likely the one who held the patient's leg.

Refurbished phone market set for strong growth

New Delhi: The organised refurbished smartphone market is expected to end this calendar year with a double-digit growth in sales despite the exit of two large ecommerce platforms Amazon and Flipkart from the segment, denting sales in the first half.A robust festive season, however, helped the sector regain momentum, industry executives said. Companies have also started expanding into categories such as laptops, cameras, smartwatches, and gaming consoles to diversify revenues, they added. In the first half of 2025, both Amazon and Flipkart restructured their businesses of selling refurbished smartphones by discontinuing sales of externally-refurbished products due to high return rates, and inconsistent quality. This led to a dip in sales for companies selling refurbished handsets through the platforms. 126147462 According to Counterpoint Research, India's refurbished smartphone market grew 9% on-year in the calendar first half, sparking a shift in business models with companies such as Cashify and Control Z focusing on expanding their direct-to-consumer channels including both online and offline stores."This exit created a short-term drop in sales for ecosystem partners but opened a significant long-term vacuum in the market for organised players," said Yug Bhatia, co-founder, ControlZ, a Gurugram-based refurbished smartphone seller. "In response to these platforms leaving, we have expanded our inventory beyond the previous exclusivity with iPhones to include Android devices, witnessing clear demand for them."Revenue from direct-to-consumer channels has nearly doubled year-on-year, rebounding from a decline in the first half, while current monthly revenues have surpassed last year's figures, said Bhatia.Amazon and Flipkart's exit, however, also led to a surge in smartphone sales in the unorganised sector, he said. "Currently, the unorganised sector is booming because the organised marketplaces are inactive. But, in the next 3-6 months, the organised market will pick up as players refine their independent strategies," he said.Cashify, considered the largest organised seller of refurbished handsets, said it expects to close 2025 with a 40% surge in revenue. It also saw a 16% increase in trade-ins, helping ease constrained supply of old devices in the market. "Approximately 300,000 smartphones were sold directly to consumers via our online channel, which accounts for roughly 20% of our total devices sold," said Nakul Kumar, co-founder, Cashify. He added that the company saw a 3% volume growth in direct-to-consumer channels, with a 30-40% increase in revenues from '1,150 crore in 2024.Overall, Cashify expects to sell 2.4 million devices this year, up from 2 million in 2024. It has also started seeing an uptick in sales of premium smartphones with many buying opting for EMIs. The number of deals processed through financing options has doubled compared to last year, Kumar said. "iPhones make up 60% of sales in the online market, and overall, it is 25% of the total portfolio. MacBooks also account for 30% of laptop sales," said Kumar. "We expect to close between '150-200 crore in laptop sales this year, with a target of '350-400 crore next year."

'40% Pollution Linked To Us': Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari's Confession

As Delhi chokes under toxic smog, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday acknowledged that the transport sector contributes significantly to pollution and stressed the urgent need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Gadkari said, "If there is any true nationalism today, it is reducing imports and increasing exports. But look at our situation. I stay in Delhi for two days and develop a throat infection. Delhi is troubled by pollution. I am the Road Transport Minister, and around 40 per cent of pollution is linked to our sector."

He further questioned the country's heavy reliance on fossil fuels, noting that India spends nearly Rs 22 lakh crore annually on fossil fuel imports. "What kind of nationalism is this? Fossil fuels are limited, and pollution is increasing. Can't we reduce fossil fuel usage? Why can't we promote electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles, which can lead to zero pollution?" he asked.

Gadkari's remarks came as Delhi's air quality deteriorated sharply. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at a hazardous level of 413 at around 8 am on Tuesday, severely affecting visibility and public health. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality reached 'severe' levels in several parts of the National Capital Region (NCR).

Major pollution hotspots included Anand Vihar (AQI 466), Ashok Vihar (444) and Chandni Chowk (425). Areas around India Gate, Kartavya Path and Rashtrapati Bhavan were also blanketed by toxic smog, with the AQI recorded at 384, categorised as 'Very Poor'.

In response to the alarming pollution levels, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked all measures under GRAP Stage-IV across Delhi-NCR. As part of emergency steps, truck-mounted water sprinklers were deployed to suppress dust and curb particulate pollution.

The opposition has been demanding a discussion on pollution in Parliament. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi raised the matter during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, demanding a structured debate on air pollution. Calling it a "national health emergency", he urged the government to discuss concrete measures to tackle the crisis.

However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, accused the opposition of "stalling" the debate in Parliament on air pollution. Rijiju said the government was fully ready for the discussion, but the "Congress encouraged others to stage protests" in the Well of the House over the VB-G RAM G bill.

General insurer privatisation rebooted

New Delhi: The government will restart the selection process for privatising a state-run general insurer in the next financial year, people with knowledge of the matter said days after Parliament passed a bill to raise the foreign direct investment (FDI) limit in the insurance sector to 100%.Of the four public sector general insurers, only listed New India Assurance is profitable while National Insurance, United India Insurance and Oriental Insurance remain loss-making despite a marginal turnaround."We expect more players to show interest, and better valuations," said a government official, who did not wish to be identified, adding that all options are being weighed. 126126998 Last week, Parliament passed the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Bill, 2025, enhancing FDI in the insurance sector from 74%, besides giving more power to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI).Another government official said a performance review of the four state-run insurance firms will be held after December quarter results, following which further intergovernmental discussions will be held. "There is a case for capital infusion in the loss-making insurers. We will need to see which firms have the potential to turn around on their own," the official said on condition of anonymity, adding that private sector interest may also depend on the chosen firm's financial health.Oriental Insurance, which has losses of around ₹8,293 crore on its balance sheet, reported a profit of ₹86 crore for the second quarter of 2024-25, down from a profit of ₹210 crore a year ago. The latest solvency margin ratio as reported by the firm stood at -1.01 and 0.30 with full forbearance. United India Insurance Company made a turnaround in 2024-25, posting a net profit of ₹154 crore net profit for the fiscal. But as of September 30, 2025, the firm's losses stood at ₹3,297 crore. The solvency margin ratio stood at -1.44.National Insurance reported a loss of ₹284 crore for the September quarter, against a ₹374 crore profit a year ago. It reported a solvency ratio of -0.75, as of September 30. As per the IRDAI, all insurance companies need to maintain a surplus of 1.5 times the liabilities at all times. The solvency margin - the minimum margin of assets required by an insurer in excess of its liabilities - is akin to a bank's capital ratios. Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced in her 2021-22 budget speech the government's intention to privatise two public sector banks and one general insurance company. In August 2021, the government had notified the General Insurance Business (Nationalisation) Amendment Act, paving the way for reducing its stake in state-owned general insurers to below 51%.

Boney Kapoor Says He Originally Planned To Make Ghajini With Salman Khan

Producer Boney Kapoor has revisited one of the biggest "what could have been" moments of his career. In a recent interview, he revealed that he had envisioned Salman Khan in the lead role long before Aamir Khan came on board, but delays in acquiring the remake rights cost him the project.

Why Boney Kapoor Felt Salman Khan Was Perfect For Ghajini

Speaking about his long-standing association with Salman Khan, Boney Kapoor explained why he believed the actor would have been an ideal fit for the Hindi remake of Ghajini

Drawing from Salman's look in Tere Naam, the producer told Rediff, "In the first half of Tere Naam, Salman sports long hair, but for the post interval portions, when he is confined to an ashram for the mentally ill, he had shaved his head. I thought that with his chiseled physique, and his hair pruned, he would be a perfect fit for Suriya's role in Ghajini."

Boney revealed that he had already set the wheels in motion to acquire the remake rights. His representative in the South had approached the makers, only to be told that the rights were tied up as collateral. "My representative down South approached the producer for the Hindi remake rights. He was told by Salem Chandrasekharan that they had been given as collateral to Allu Aravind, who had distributed the Telugu version of Ghajini, but he could buy the rights by paying off both of them," he recalled.

How The Delay Cost Boney Kapoor The Project

Boney Kapoor then approached Madhu Mantena, who had connections with Allu Aravind, hoping to secure the rights. However, what followed was months of uncertainty. "I subsequently reached out to Madhu Mantena, who was friends with Allu Aravind, for the purchase of rights. Madhu kept assuring me, 'Ho jayega (It will happen),'" Boney said.

During this period, events took a turn that ultimately changed the fate of the film. "Meanwhile, Pradeep Rawat, who played the antagonist, showed the Tamil film to Aamir Khan. For almost six months, while he was debating over whether he wanted to do the Hindi remake of Ghajini, Madhu kept me dangling. When Aamir finally consented, Madhu Mantena and Allu Aravind decided to produce the film themselves and I lost out. I wanted to remake Ghajini with Salman, and to this day, I regret missing out on the opportunity," he shared.

Reflecting further on his bond with Salman Khan, Boney also recalled how the actor had once agreed to work without charging a fee. "I approached him for a special appearance in Sirf Tum... To my surprise, Salman readily agreed to do the film and shot with us for two days. Since we weren't good friends, I would say it was a goodwill gesture because he refused to take any money or even a gift," he said.

BCCI Makes Huge Pay Hike For Domestic Women Cricketers, Match Officials

The BCCI has more than doubled the match fees of women cricketers and officials in domestic cricket, a move triggered by India's maiden ODI World Cup triumph and aimed at creating a more equitable pay structure across the circuit. The substantial hike was approved by the Board's Apex Council. As per the revised structure, senior women cricketers plying their trade in domestic tournaments will now earn between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000 per day, a significant jump from the existing Rs 20,000 (Rs 10,000 for reserves) per match day.

For senior women's domestic one-day tournaments and multi-day competitions, players in the first XI will receive Rs 50,000 per day, while those in reserves will be paid half the amount at Rs 25,000 per day.

In national T20 tournaments, first XI players will earn Rs 25,000 per match day, with reserves receiving Rs 12,500.

If a top domestic women cricketer now features across all formats during a full season, she can earn anywhere between Rs 12 lakh and Rs 14 lakh, according to BCCI officials.

Match officials to get richer

The Apex Council has also increased the remuneration for junior women cricketers. Players in the Under-23 and Under-19 categories will be paid Rs 25,000 per day, while reserves will get Rs 12,500.

Match officials, including umpires and match referees, will also benefit from the revised fee structure.

For league matches in domestic tournaments, the proposed earnings for umpires and match referees will be Rs 40,000 per day.

For knockout matches, the per-day fee will range between Rs 50,000 and Rs 60,000, depending on the importance of the game and operational requirements.

As a result of this hike, umpires officiating in Ranji Trophy league matches will now earn around Rs 1.60 lakh per game, while knockout fixtures will fetch them between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh per match.

The BCCI believes the revised pay structure will provide greater financial security and motivation to women cricketers and domestic match officials, while strengthening the overall domestic ecosystem.

Gujarat Student, Forced To Join Russian Army, Sends SOS Video From Ukraine

A young man from Gujarat, who went to Russia for studies on a student visa, has in a video message requested people not to join the Russian military under any circumstances.

He was allegedly forced to serve in the Russian military after being blackmailed with a false drugs case, he said.

The student, Sahil Mohammad Hussain, made the appeal in a video taken in Ukraine - where he has been kept after his capture by Ukrainian forces.

In the video shared by the Ukrainian authorities, Sahil Mohammad Hussain, who is from Gujarat's Morbi, asked the Indian government to help him return home. He said he had been working part time for a courier firm while studying in Russia.

He alleged the police in Russia falsely implicated him in a drug case, and promised to drop the case if he served in the Russian Army.

"President Vladimir Putin was in India recently. I would like to request the government to speak to Putin for my safe return home," he said.

In another video, he said he took the Russian deal in order to get rid of the false drugs case. After training for 15 days, the Russians sent him to the frontline, he said.

The first thing he did on reaching the frontline, Hussain said, was to surrender to the Ukrainian Army. The Ukrainian forces sent the videos to his mother in Gujarat and asked her to raise awareness about Indians being duped into serving in the Russian military.

She has filed a petition with a court in Delhi for her son's safe return. The next hearing is in February.

"I came to Russia for studies in 2024. But due to financial and visa issues, I came in touch with some Russians who turned out to be in narcotics... I have not done anything. At least 700 people were jailed by Russia on drugs charges. But the jail authorities gave them a choice of getting the charges dropped by joining the Russian military," the Indian student in an olive green jacket said in the video.

"I feel hopeless. I don't know what will happen. But I do have a message for young people who are coming to Russia, 'be careful'. There are many scamsters here who can falsely implicate you in a drug case," he said in the video.

"I would like to appeal to the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, please help," he added.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on December 5 said India is actively working to secure the release of its citizens who have joined the Russian armed forces, while urging caution to prevent further recruitment.

At a special briefing on the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Misri said PM Modi raised the matter with the Russian President, underscoring that "our concerted efforts continue on a regular basis to secure the early release of Indian citizens from the Russian Army."

"This issue of the recruitment of Indian citizens into the Russian armed forces was broached by PM Modi," Misri added.

He cautioned Indian citizens against accepting offers to join the Russian military. "I would just take this opportunity to reiterate once again that our citizens should avoid very, very carefully any offers to join the Russian armed forces. We are seeing several cases of people stranded there, appealing to be rescued and brought out. As I said, we are actively engaged in that effort," he added.

Families of Indians stranded in Russia have been protesting, demanding the government's intervention to bring their loved ones back.

Smriti Mandhana Shatters Huge World Record, Enters Elite Women's T20I List

Star batter Smriti Mandhana shattered a huge India record during the 1st Women's T20I against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam on Sunday. The 29-year-old became the first Indian to breach the 4,000-run mark in women's T20Is. Overall, she is the second after New Zealand's Suzie Bates, who has scored 4,716 runs in 177 matches. In the first T20I against Sri Lanka, Mandhana scored a run-a-ball 25 before holing out in the ninth over of India's 122-run chase. However, Mandhana is quickest to do so in terms of balls taken (3227) than Bates, who took 3675 balls to reach the 4000 runs milestone.

This was Smriti's first appearance since the ODI World Cup final where India defeated South Africa to win their first title last month.

Earlier, India restricted Sri Lanka to a modest 121 for six after the visiting batters struggled to put away the loose balls.

Opener Vishmi Gunaratne top-scored for the visitors with a 43-ball 39, while Hasini Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama chipped in with 20 and 21 respectively.

Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu got into the act straightaway, clipping an innocuous Kranti Gaud delivery off her pads for a four.

Player of the Series in India's triumphant campaign in the recent ODI World Cup, Deepti Sharma (1/20 in 4 overs) dived to keep what looked like a certain boundary to just one run in the next over, before Athapaththu got two fours in three balls off Gaud.

The left-handed Athapaththu's aggressive approach forced Gaud to go around the wicket and the young seamer struck with a change in angle, the ball going through the gap between bat and pad to disturb the Sri Lankan captain's stumps and give India their first breakthrough.

Hasini found a boundary when she worked a Gaud delivery towards the deep fine leg region before home skipper Harmanpreet Kaur introduced Deepti inside the powerplay.

Hasini missed out on a couple of loose balls to help Deepti start with a maiden, which saw the Islanders remain at 31 for one at the end of powerplay.

Bowling a lot slower than her other left-arm spin colleague Shree Charani, debutant Vaishnavi Sharma (0/16 in 4 overs) began her journey in international cricket with a tidy spell. The 20-year-old conceded just three runs in her first over.

Hasini played a premeditated reverse sweep to collect a four off Shree Charani, who spilled a relatively straightforward chance at short fine leg in the next over to give the Lankan batter a reprieve.

Had Charani held on to that ball, it would have given Vaishnavi his maiden wicket.

Desperately looking for quick runs, Hasini, however, fell in the next over when she played the ball to Gaud at short third after attempting a reverse sweep against Deepti.

Dew was already setting in and even though the India bowlers were struggling to grip the ball, they did exceedingly well to keep Sri Lanka at 55 for two in the first 10 overs.

Having a bad day on the field, Charani then dropped Harshitha Madavi off Arundhati Reddy.

After Shaktimaan Controversy, Mukesh Khanna Says Ranveer Is A "Good Actor"

Veteran actor Mukesh Khanna, known for his iconic role as Shaktimaan, has praised Ranveer Singh's performance in his latest release, Dhurandhar. Describing the film as "perfect", Mukesh called Ranveer a "good actor". This comes a year after he denied Ranveer the role of Shaktimaan due to his "mischievous" on-screen image.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Mukesh Khanna lauded Ranveer's energy and screen presence in Dhurandhar. He also praised the film's director, Aditya Dhar, for the strong writing and his creative vision.

The veteran actor said, "There are many brilliant adjectives that can be attributed to the film Dhurandhar. It's a perfect film, a commercial film, and one that will hit the masses. Every department did their best, whether it was acting, directing, action, direction, or writing. Everyone has given their best, so that you can call the film Dhurandhar in every way."

Talking about Ranveer, he added, "I would like to praise this film's hero, Dhurandhar, Ranveer Singh. You will say, ‘You didn't let him play Shaktimaan'. I may have denied him the role of Shaktimaan, but he is a good actor, I always say this. He has great energy in this film, and his eyes are brooding because this man has come from India and has been planted in Pakistan. How he enters this world and becomes a gang member.”

Earlier, Mukesh Khanna had denied Ranveer Singh the role of Shaktimaan in the titular movie. In an interview with Filmygyan, the actor said, "Ranveer and I sat and talked for three hours, and he's a very energetic actor. But I have openly said to his face, You can play Tamraj Kilvish (the story's villain). His face has a mischievous positivity. This actor – if you tell him to play Shaktimaan, you might enjoy it because he makes you dance, but you need someone mature enough to play Shaktimaan.”

The television show ran on Doordarshan from 1997 to 2005. Mukesh Khanna played both Shaktimaan and his alter ego, Gangadhar, a photojournalist.

Meanwhile, Dhurandhar has entered the Rs 500 crore club in India. The spy actioner is well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing film of the year.

Income tax officials also searched some premises in Bengaluru in connection with the case, officials said.

The action came a day after the Bengaluru Police filed a case against Bastian Garden City, an outlet of the high-end restaurant in the city, for operating past the legal closing hours.

The actor and her husband, Raj Kundra, are also fighting allegations of cheating a businessman of Rs 60 crore in an investment deal. The Mumbai Police's Economic Offences Wing charged the couple with cheating.

Kishan Surpasses Dhoni, Equals Abhishek After 45-Ball 100 In SMAT Final

Ishan Kishan was in fiery form for Jharkhand against Haryana in the final of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy - the national T20 tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter, who is the captain of Jharkhand, slammed 101 off just 49 balls (10x6s, 6x4s). This was Kishan's fifth century in SMAT in 62 innings, equalling Abhishek Sharma. Kishan hit 33 sixes in SMAT 2025 - the most by a designated wicketkeeper-captain in any T20 tournament (international or domestic franchise). Earlier, MS Dhoni (30 sixes, IPL 2018) and Nicholas Pooran (30, ILT20 2023-24) held the record.

Kishan's century is bound to be noticed by the BCCI selectors. Kishan, who last played for India against Australia in a T20I in 2023, has been playing for India A in recent times. However, as far as T20Is go, Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma are above him in the pecking order.

Kishan made a compelling case for a T20I recall with a belligerent hundred to power Jharkhand to their maiden Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title with a 69-run victory over Haryana here on Thursday.

Kishan went on a six-hitting spree, smashing 10 maximums en route to a breathtaking 49-ball 101, as Jharkhand piled up an imposing 262 for 3.

Jharkhand bowlers, led by medium pacer Anukul Roy, then struck twice in his opening over while his team applied the brakes with regular wickets to bowl out Haryana for 193, despite a fighting half-century from wicketkeeper-batter Yashvardhan Dalal (53).

Roy also also smashed a 20-ball 40.

Jharkhand thus became the 12th state to win the country's premier T20 domestic tournament.

Invited to bat first, the Jharkhand skipper stitched a decisive 177-run partnership for the second wicket with Kumar Kushagra, who played the perfect foil with a rapid 81 off 38 deliveries to keep the pressure firmly on the Haryana bowlers.

The century was Kishan's second of the tournament. The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form throughout the competition and topped the run charts with 517 runs from 10 innings at a staggering strike rate of 197.32.

The left-hander's rich vein of form comes at an opportune time, with the national selectors set to convene soon to pick India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup.

Kishan treated the Haryana attack with complete disdain, also striking eight fours, and brought up his hundred with a stylish one-handed six over extra cover.

He was eventually clean bowled by Sumit Kumar in the 15th over, with Kushagra departing in the following over.

Late cameos from Anukul and Robin Minz (31 off 14) ensured Jharkhand finished on a high, posting a total that proved well beyond Haryana's reach.

Haryana batters needed to go hammer and tongs to overhaul the daunting target, but their chase began in disastrous fashion as they lost skipper Ankit Kumar (0) and Ashish Siwach (0) in quick succession to slump to 2/1.

Wicketkeeper-batter Dalal attempted to steady the innings, first adding 34 runs with opener Arsh Ranga (17) and then forging a 67-run partnership with Nishant Sindhu (31).

However, Anukul turned the match decisively in Jharkhand's favour by removing both set batters in the same over, derailing Haryana's chase.

Brief Score: Jharkhand 262/3 in 20 overs (Ishan Kishan 101, Kumar Kushagra 89; Sumit Kumar 1/41) Haryana 193 all out in 18.3 overs (Yashvardhan Dalal 53, Samant Jakhar 38; Sushant Mishra 3/21)

"Had A Muslim Man Lifted Hindu Woman's Veil...": Omar Abdullah On Hijab Row

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, speaking on the hijab row in Bihar and the BJP's reaction to it, said today that one can expect no better from the party. A section of leaders in the BJP has been vocal supporters of Bihar Chief Minister and ally Nitish Kumar -- who landed in controversy after pulling at a Muslim doctor's veil at a public event.  Today, BJP minister Giriraj Singh escalated the row with his comment that the woman can accept the appointment or "go to hell".

Amid vocal demands for an apology, Omar Abdullah said, "If I had lifted the veil of a Hindu woman in Haryana or Rajasthan, would the BJP said the same?"

"Had a Muslim man lifted the veil of a Hindu woman imagine the kind of trouble it would have caused. But because the woman is a Muslim, the BJP is behaving this way. We can expect no more from them," he added.

Earlier today, Giriraj Singh had staunchly defended Kumar, saying he has done nothing wrong. "If anyone goes to take an appointment letter, should they not show their face? Is this an Islamic nation? If you go to take your passport, or go to the airport, do you not show your face?" he told journalists.

Asked what if the girl still refused to take the job, Singh shot back, "Woh refuse kare yaah jahannum mein jaye (She can refuse or go to hell)".

Before Singh, NDA ally Nishad party leader and Uttar Pradesh minister Sanjay Nishad had made headlines with his crude comment defending Kumar.

Speaking to a local news channel, Nishad questioned what would have happened if Kumar had "touched somewhere else".

"Arey, woh bhi toh aadmi hain na, peeche nahi padna chahiye. Naqab chhoo diya toh itna ho gaya...kahin aur chhoo dete toh kya ho jaata (He is a man being after all. One should not hound him like this. If touching the 'hijab' caused such an uproar, what would have happened if he had touched elsewhere)," he had told Bharat Samachar.

Today, the leader claimed that his comments were misunderstood because of regional overtones.

"My remark was tweaked and twisted, misinterpreted, its spirit lost in cacophony and translation," the UP fisheries minister was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India.

Nishad said he belongs to Gorakhpur and the Bhojpuri-speaking belt and expressions and conversational styles differ from region to region. "In Bhojpuri, this is a common way of urging people not to make too much of any issue and to counsel restraint. I chose to use the same style in Hindi and didn't know it will become such an issue," he said.

"Just as language and expressions vary in Haryana, Delhi, Maharashtra or Tamil Nadu, dialects in north India and eastern Uttar Pradesh also differ. That does not mean there was any intention to insult," he said.

The Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the Aam Aadmi Party sought an unconditional apology from him.

Nitish Kumar's action, meanwhile, has been censored by the Amnesty International, which has terming the move an "assault on this woman's dignity, autonomy, and identity".

"When a public official forcibly pulls down a woman's hijab, it sends a message to the public that this behavior is acceptable," the global rights organization said.

"Such actions deepen fear, normalize discrimination and erode the very foundations of equality and freedom of religion. This violation demands unequivocal condemnation and accountability. Urgent steps must be taken to ensure that no woman is subjected to such degrading treatment," it added.

"Dhoni Will Move On": CSK Head Coach's 'At Some Point' Remark Creates Buzz

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming was quite honest while talking about the side's decision of trading Ravindra Jadeja for Sanju Samson. He admitted that the move was executed in order to keep the franchise prepared when MS Dhoni leaves. Notably, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter has guided CSK to a record-equalling five Indian Premier League titles. Given Dhoni is at the fag end of his career, CSK need a replacement to fill his shoes in the upcoming years.

The trade was a big call from the franchise as it also included England's Sam Curran. The all-rounder too headed to Rajasthan Royals along with Ravindra Jadeja for Samson as part of the deal.

"For us, the opportunity was there. We felt we were still a little bit light in our opening batting. And we were also looking at the fact that at some point, MS will move on," Fleming said at the IPL 2026 auction.

"Sanju is an international-quality player, and he fills that role very well

"So it's succession planning, but also about refreshing the group and looking at what Chennai will look like in six years, not just two."

CSK are shifting from their mindset of preferring experience over everything. The franchise that was once known as the hub for veteran cricketers is now moving towards roping in more and more youngsters.

The change was seen midway through IPL 2025 when CSK included the likes of uncapped players Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel. Even during the auction on December 16 this year, the franchise splurged a huge sum of Rs 14.2 crore each for uncapped players Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma.

"As the game has evolved, we might have been a little bit slow to evolve with it. Only halfway through the (2025) tournament we had a big shift and you saw with the players we got in as reserves, there was a shift in what we needed to do," Fleming said.

'Should've Held Game In Kerala': S Tharoor As T20 Match Abandoned In Lucknow

The India vs South Africa 4th T20I in Lucknow on Wednesday was called off without a ball being bowled due to excessive fog. The toss was supposed to take place at 6:30 PM IST but was delayed due to excessive fog, according to the BCCI. Umpires opted for pitch inspections at 6:50 PM, 7:30 PM, 8 PM, 8:30 PM, and 9 PM. The endless wait frustrated everyone. Finally, the game was called off after a final inspection at 9:25 PM. While there was dense fog throughout, several social media users commented that pollution played a big part in the abandonment.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor reflected on how fans suffered. "Cricket fans have been waiting in vain for the #INDVSSAODI to start in Lucknow. But thanks to dense smog, pervasive in most north Indian cities, and an AQI of 411, visibility is too poor to permit a game of cricket. They should've scheduled the game in Thiruvananthapuram, where AQI is about 68 right now!" Tharoor posted on X.

Tharoor was not alone.

"Can you IMAGINE? The 4th T20I match between India and South Africa delayed due to pollution in Lucknow. Hardik Pandya was seen wearing a face mask. It is very dangerous for players to play in this deadly toxic air," a social media user wrote.

Here are some other reactions.

The match could well have decided the result of the series, with the hosts needing a win to seal it. However, what the two teams and the thousands of spectators got was an endless wait. 2007 T20 World Cup winner Robin Uthappa, who was commentating on the match, was left quite irritated. He wondered whether it was possible for the fog to clear as the evening progressed.

"I am actually befuddled by the umpire's decision. This is not going to get better. I have played first-class cricket in much worse conditions than this. This is way better," said Robin Uthappa.

Ahead of the fourth T20I, Indian all-rounder Axar Patel was ruled out of the remaining two matches of the five-match series against South Africa due to illness, the BCCI said on Monday.

The BCCI stated that the star all-rounder will remain with the Indian team in Lucknow and will undergo further medical assessment.

In place of Axar Patel, the BCCI Men's Selection Committee named Shahbaz Ahmed as his replacement for the remaining T20I matches against South Africa in Lucknow and Ahmedabad.

The fifth and final T20I between the two countries will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on December 19.
