HYDERABAD: Sajjala Bio Labs said it has successfully completed preclinical toxicology studies for recombinant liraglutide, a drug used for the treatment of type-2 diabetes and obesity.In a statement, the Hyderabad-based company that reported Rs 15 crore of revenue last fiscal year, said it would soon take up clinical studies on the drug.Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, which markets the product under the brand name Victoza, held the patent for this drug till September last year in India and other countries. Liraglutide has now become a bio-generic in the markets where the patent expired, Sajjala Bio said.The company is aiming to complete the clinical trials and launch generic liraglutide by December next year or so, director Bhargava Sajjala said. Its vision is to develop cost-effective bio-generics of complex molecules and strategy is to focus primarily on India and other semi-regulated and less-regulated markets, he said.
