New Delhi: India’s vaccine rollout started on Tuesday with 56 lakh jabs of Covishield, the Covid vaccine manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India (SII), reaching several cities. Bharat Biotech will dispatch its first tranche on Wednesday. Serum Institute vaccines were being transported to Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati, Shillong, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Bengaluru, Lucknow and Chandigarh, Union aviation minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted. SII’s chief executive officer (CEO) and owner Adar Poonawalla called it an “emotional moment” for the team as the first shipments of Covishield left for multiple locations across India. Bharat Biotech will dispatch the first tranche of 2.4 lakh doses of Covaxin on Wednesday to 12 destinations including Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Odisha, Maharashtra, Bihar, Haryana, Assam, Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, a government official said. The government has so far ordered 110 lakh doses from SII and 55 lakh doses of Covaxin from Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech. Out of the total number of doses, Bharat Biotech is providing 16.5 lakh doses of Covaxin free of cost to the government. The vaccines will be free for the priority groups and the cost will be borne by the Centre, PM Narendra Modi said on Monday.80242726
