For Rs 5, a meeting with Modi could be yours

NEW DELHI: Referral codes on e-commerce or travel websites could get one a fat discount. But a referral code generated on the prime minister’s personal mobile application could bring you face-to-face with the prime minister himself!A new feature on the Narendra Modi (NaMO) app allows anyone making a micro donation — Rs 5 to Rs 1,000 — to the BJP to get a referral code. The giver can then send this code to his contacts via email, SMS or WhatsApp. “If a hundred people use that referral code or the sent link to donate funds through the app, the motivator could get a chance to meet the prime minister,” a senior BJP leader told ET.The BJP leader quoted above said the move is the party’s latest attempt to “increase contact” between the prime minister and the common people. The BJP had recently introduced the micro donation feature on the NaMO app.The meeting with the prime minister could involve a group of such “active influencers” who have encouraged a 100 people apiece to donate to the BJP through the NaMO mobile app, party leaders told ET. Anyone able to get at least 10 people to donate using his or her referral code will get free NaMO merchandise, such as t-shirts or coffee mugs, available on the app.The incentive of meeting Modi could drive up donations for the BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections, given the prime minister’s popularity among the masses, party leaders said. They cited an “encouraging response” to the micro donation exercise so far through the app — this option was earlier available on the BJP website. “The average amount donated by a person is Rs 300-400. Our experience shows that most people either donated Rs 100 or Rs 1,000,” a party functionary said.ET was the first to report on September 18 about NaMo merchandise going on sale on the mobile app and a micro donation option being added.
