Ready to resume operations, companies look for ways to test staff

NEW DELHI: India Inc has written to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) asking for ways in which staff can be asked to operate from offices, especially since there is confusion over whether rapid antibody tests can be the basis for a risk-free certificate to resume work. With rapid antibody tests under scrutiny due to concerns over their accuracy, the options are limited, company executives told ET.“We want people to be safe while they are at work. Some of us thought that antibody tests could be of help. However, since it won’t be possible to get RT-PCR done for everyone, we have asked for options as we plan to open,” said an executive at an automobile company. As of now, the RT-PCR test is an expensive option and is unrealistic given the shortage of kits. Some corporates are contemplating if temperature checks can be made compulsory. Others are also planning to tie up with private labs for bulk testing at discounted rates. One option that ICMR is considering is pooled testing of individuals using the more expensive RT-PCR method, according to sources. “The methodology involves testing a combined sample for multiple people from a household or a local cluster,” sources said.According to people aware of the matter, pool testing could help widen reach. “Since antibody test remains wishy-washy, there is a suggestion that RT-PCR pooling of samples can be an option to find if people are infected and hence corporates can remain assured that the people working with them are safe,” said a private laboratory owner. Meanwhile, the ministry of micro, small and medium enterprises has already asked companies to follow a protocol. There are 9.1 million MSMEs, for which the ministry has prepared a video format that entails details about safety precautions. They have been asked to download Aarogya Setu app. “The enterprises have been asked to restrict number of people, to maintain social distancing measures,” said a government official.75525173
