Sonia Gandhi offers to resign as interim prez

NEW DELHI: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi is believed to have told senior party leaders that she would resign from her post of party’s interim president as she was “extremely upset” with the way in which the rift in the Congress was playing out, particularly at a time when she was battling health concerns.Her offer to resign comes amid growing chorus against Rahul Gandhi’s style of functioning as well as calls for an organisation and leadership overhaul. ET has gathered at least three letters that have reached Sonia with signatories going well beyond the 23 now in public.As ET had first reported on August 21 and then August 22, several senior leaders had in one way or the other conveyed their concerns on the party’s future to Sonia Gandhi as her one-year interim term had come to a close. These leaders now want a committed, permanent leadership overhaul, or at least an agreed roadmap. Gandhi could resign at the extraordinary CWC meeting on Monday, if not earlier, an All India Congress Committee (AICC) functionary said.
