Deadline extension to thermal power plants likely for anti-pollution gear switch

New Delhi: Even as India battles a serious air pollution problem, the environment ministry is preparing to grant another extension to more than 300 thermal power plants to retrofit new anti-pollution equipment — on the grounds of the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions on imports from China. The Centre is expected to soon notify a two-year extension for thermal power plants to switch to the Flue Gas Desulfurisation (FGD) system, moving the deadline from 2022 to 2024.This will be the second major relaxation of the deadline to thermal power plants. It is set to come days after the green ministry did away with the condition for power plants to use coal with less than 34% ash content, citing the overall redundancy in the sector. The power ministry, the Central Electricity Authority, Association of Power producers and industry chambers had taken up the issue with the environment ministry as well as the Prime Minister’s Office over the last few months. They had sought a three-year extension. As per the Environment (Protection) Amendment Rules (EPAR) of 2015, all thermal power plants in the country were to switch to the FGD system — which essentially reduces the emissions of sulphur dioxide, particulate matter and oxides of nitrogen from the exhaust flue gas at power plants — by December 2017. This deadline was shifted to 2022 after the Supreme Court stepped in.
