It was a thriller right from the start, as India conceded many penalty corners. After Sam Lane scored for New Zealand, Mandeep Singh equalised for India. Vivek Sagar Prasad then gave India the lead, before Simon Child equalised. Harmanpreet Singh then scored from a penalty stroke in the 59th minute to make it 3-2 for India.
