Hiring of delivery, supply chain staff on rise

Demand for delivery agents are on the rise yet again as a second wave of Covid-19 forces several states to impose fresh restrictions such as weekend lockdowns and night curfews, shifting more buying to online.Large ecommerce and online delivery companies such as Flipkart, BigBasket, Swiggy, Delhivery and Dunzo confirmed to ET their plans to ramp up their frontline workforce amid a growing demand for online delivery across the country.According to various estimates, demand for delivery and supply chain personnel will double to 200,000-300,000 per month over the next two-three months. 82058745Estimates by human capital management and staffing companies such as Betterplace and ManpowerGroup India and logistics providers like Shadowfax suggest more delivery jobs in the current quarter due to a combination of factors including increased purchases by existing e-buyers, a significant chunk of offline retail demand shifting online due to Covid-related restrictions in various regions and fear of catching the infection, and the ongoing IPL pushing demand for food delivery companies.“Pure play delivery companies, logistics firms and other ecommerce companies together hire about 100,000-150,000 people every month including feet-on-the-street and related supply chain jobs,” said Saurabh Tandon, COO of Betterplace.“The increase in demand for online delivery has led to a further increase in demand and an additional 100,000-150,000 delivery and supply chain jobs are estimated each month during April-June.”He attributed a “large part of the demand” to consistent churn and monthly attrition of 8-10%.Shadowfax, which has 150,000 delivery partners, plans to onboard around 100,000 more people by June. “Our demand has grown multi-fold and especially in the last month, not just in metro cities but also in small towns and cities,” said Praharsh Chandra, cofounder and COO of Shadowfax Technologies. He said home delivery orders are higher in areas with a high incidence of Covid cases.“Rising Covid cases in cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Pune have added up the demands as people are once again wary of going out and doing shopping,” said Alok Kumar, senior director of sales, account management and global accounts at ManpowerGroup India, which has seen nearly 15% spike in demand of delivery boys in past few weeks.
